    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e ExpressãoEste trabalho foi sugerido pela afirmação de Flannery O'Connor que sua "dedicação estética" nasceu através do contato com Art and Scholasticism de Jacques Maritain. O propósito foi chegar a uma interpretação do sentido da frase. Uma investigação detalhada foi feita do conteúdo de Art and Scholasticism, posteriormente contrastada com os resultados de uma pesquisa feita em seus ensaios e suas cartas, o que revelou numerosos ecos de diversos trechos constando no texto de Maritain. Três pontos principais foram escolhidos como critérios na análise do hábito artístico de O'Connor: 1) a prática de arte implica uma luta; 2) a arte somente pode ser percebida pelos sentidos; e 3) a prática de arte exige do artista a dedicação indivisa à obra nascente. O estudo conclui que, para O'Connor, o brotar da dentição estética, através da leitura de Art and Scholasticism, significou que, ao perceber na análise da natureza da arte algo com que podia concordar, ela reconheceu tanto sua própria capacidade de tornar-se uma artista literária, quanto sua vontade de assumir a tarefa de desenvolver em sua pessoa o hábito de arte

    Mitochondrial respiration in the African trypanosome undergoes dramatic developmental stage regulation. This requires co-ordinated control of components encoded by both the nuclear genome and the kinetoplast, the unusual mitochondrial genome of these parasites. As a model for understanding the co-ordination of these genomes, we have examined the regulation and mitochondrial import of a nuclear-encoded component of the cytochrome oxidase complex, cytochrome oxidase subunit VI (COXVI). By generating transgenic trypanosomes expressing intact or mutant forms of this protein, we demonstrate that COXVI is not imported using a conventional cleaved presequence and show that sequences at the N-terminus of the protein are necessary for correct mitochondrial sorting. Analyses of endogenous and transgenic COXVI mRNA and protein expression in parasites undergoing developmental stage differentiation demonstrates a temporal order of control involving regulation in the abundance of, first, mRNA and then protein. This represents the first dissection of the regulation and import of a nuclear-encoded protein into the cytochrome oxidase complex in these organisms, which were among the earliest eukaryotes to possess a mitochondrion

    Analyses bibliometrically 226 publications [Papers Published in journals-220, thesis [others 4] by Biman Bagchi, a renowned physical chemist from India, published during 1981 to 2002. The first contribution of the author was in 1981 at the age of 27. The number of his contributions in a year peaked in 1999 and 2002 when it touched 19. The author is highly productive in as much as on average the author has produced 10 papers per year. In the byline of authorship, Bagchi occupies the first authorship position in 69 cases. His collaborator A. Chandra occupies the first authorship position in 30 papers thus becoming Bagchi's closest collaborator. The journal has been the most preferred channel of communication of the author in as much as 220 papers out of 226 have been praced in journals. J. Chem. Phys. is found to be the most preferred journal that carried 91 papers of the author, followed by Chem. Phys. Lett. (21 papers). J. Phys. Chem. (19 papers), Proc. Indian Acad. Sci. - Chem. Sci. (13 papers), and others. Of the papers, 179 received 4030 citations and 47 received no citations. It is expected that more than 20 uncited papers till 2002 will receive citations in future. Three papers of the author have received more than 200 citations each, and another three received between 100-200 citations each. The number of papers receiving 10 citations or more total 92. On four different years the scientist has received more than 300 citations and his citation rate per paper has peaked at 18.98. The article shows with a concrete example the growth, peaking and declining of citation rate. A few new terms such as citation gain, citation loss, gaining citation rate and losing citation rate have been introduced and described

    Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Washington, 2015Music of the twentieth century and music by Taiwanese and Chinese composers are two areas underrepresented in classical repertoire. With the goal of increasing exposure for Taiwanese and Chinese composers and for contemporary music, this dissertation presents a collection of selected pieces by six composers of the 20th century, including Taiwanese composers Ty-Zen Hsiao (b. 1938), Shui-Long Ma (b. 1939), Fan-Ling Su (b. 1955) and Kwang-I Yin (b. 1960), as well as Chinese composers Chen Yi (b. 1953) and Tan Dun (b. 1957). These six composers were born between 1930 and 1960. Their compositional styles display many of the compositional techniques that characterize this diverse period, ranging from post-romanticism and neo-classicism to serialism and minimalism. This dissertation not only presents detailed biographical information on the six composers, but also enhances students’ understanding of the historical time period in each of these composers’ various home countries. In addition, features of selected pieces by the six composers are discussed through the use of extensive musical examples. This dissertation itself develops a breadth of musical and technical ability as well as exploring pedagogical applications

    On resolution to Wu's conjecture on Cauchy function's exterior singularities

    This is a series of studies on Wu's conjecture and on its resolution to be presented herein. Both are devoted to expound all the comprehensive properties of Cauchy's function f(z) (z = x + iy) and its integral J[f(z)] equivalent to (2 pi i)(-1) closed integral(C)f(t)(t - z)(-1)dt taken along the unit circle as contour C, inside which (the open domain D (+)) f(z) is regular but has singularities distributed in open domain D (-) outside C. Resolution is given to the inverse problem that the singularities of f(z) can be determined in analytical form in terms of the values f(t) of f(z) numerically prescribed on C (|t| = 1), as so enunciated by Wu's conjecture. The case of a single singularity is solved using complex algebra and analysis to acquire the solution structure for a standard reference. Multiple singularities are resolved by reducing them to a single one by elimination in principle, for which purpose a general asymptotic method is developed here for resolution to the conjecture by induction, and essential singularities are treated with employing the generalized Hilbert transforms. These new methods are applicable to relevant problems in mathematics, engineering and technology in analogy with resolving the inverse problem presented here
