Designing role-based view for object-relational databases

    No full text
In a federated database system, a view mechanism is crucial since it is used to define exportable subsets of data ; to perform a virtual restructuring d ataset; and to construct the integrated schema. The view service in federated databa se systems must be capable of retaining as much semantic information as possible. The object-oriented ( 0 - 0 ) model was considered the suitable canonical data model since it meets the original criteria for canonical model selection. However, with the emergence of stronger object-relational (0 -R ) model, the re is a clear argument for using an 0 - R canonical model in the federation. Hence, research should now focus on th e development of semantically powerful view mechanism for th e newer model. Meanwhile, the availability of real 0 -R technologies offers researchers the opportunity to develop different forms of view mechanisms. The concept of roles has been widely studied in 0 - 0 modelling and development. The role model represents some characteristics that the traditional 0-0 model lacked, such as object migration, multiple occurrences and context-dependent access. While many forms of 0-0 views were designed for the 0-0 canonical model, one option was to extend the 0-0 model to incorporate a role model. In a role model, the real entity is modelled in the form of a role rather than an object. An object represents the permanent properties of an entity is a root object; and an object represents the temporary properties of an entity is a role object. The contribution of this research is to design a view system that employees the concept of roles for the 0 -R canonical model in a federated database system. In this thesis, an examination of the current 0 -R metamodel is provided first in order to provide an environment for recognising the roleview metadata and measuring the view performance; then a Roleview Definition Language (RDL) is introduced, along with the semantics for defining virtual classes and generating virtua l extents; finally, a working prototype is provided to prove th e role-based view system is implementable and the syntax is semantically correct

Centrifuge modeling of earth-reinforced retaining walls

This paper is on the centrifuge modeling of reinforced soil retaining walls with modular blocks facing. The influence of design parameters, such as length and vertical spacing of reinforcement, on the behaviour of the structure was investigated. A total of 11 models were tested, each one with different length of reinforcement or spacing. Each model was constructed and then placed in the centrifuge in order to increase gravitational acceleration up to 35 g, reproducing the soil behaviour of a 5-m high wall. Vertical and horizontal displacements were recorded by means of a laser profiler which enabled tracking of deformations in the structure along its longitudinal cross section, essentially drawing its deformed shape. As expected, the results confirmed reinforcement parameters to be the governing factor in the behaviour of reinforced soil structures since increasing length and reducing spacing improved structural stability. However, the influence of the length was found to be the leading factor that reduced facial deformations up to five times, and the spacing playing an important role especially in unstable configurations. The failure surface was characterised by the same shape (circular) and depth, regardless of the reinforcement configuration. Furthermore, the results confirmed the over- conservatism of design codes, since models with reinforcement layers 0.3H long showed almost negligible deformations. The test results may be used to set up further numerical modeling in order to investigate on other issues, such as the influence of the reinforcement stiffness and varying backfill

Ganoderma Lucidum, a China herb, has been widely used in China and other Asian countries. G. Lucidum has been reported to be effective in modulating immune functions. Ling Zhi-8 (LZ-8) is a protein derived from the fungus Ganoderma lucidum and the polysaccharide from Ganoderma Lucidum (PS-G) is a branched (1 → 6)-β-D-glucan moiety. Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic airway inflammatory diseases in the world. The house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p), is the major allergen, and is the dominant species collected in Taiwan. Therefore, we like to investigate whether rLZ-8 and PS-G might exert a regulatory role in the treatment of allergic diseases. In this study, we first investigated the immunomodulatory effects of rLZ-8 and PS-G on BMDCs. The result showed that rLZ-8 and PS-G enhanced the expression of cell surface markers including CD86, CD83, and MHC Ⅱ, as well as the enhanced production of IL-12 p40 and IL-10. In addition, rLZ-8 or PS-G-treated BMDCs could promote T cell proliferation capacity, and increased T cell secretion of IFN-y. In animal Experiment Ⅰ, immunized female BALB/c mice were consistently intranasally received rLZ-8 and PS-G for treatment. In Experiment Ⅱ, mice were immunized (i.p.) injection of rDer p2 admixed with rLZ-8 or PS-G for investigating the preventive effect. Further, airway hyperresponsiveness, pulmonary function, TH1/TH2 cytokine production, and immunoglobulin levels will be followed. In conclusion, we demonstrated that rLZ-8 and PS-G effectively promoted the activation and maturation of immature BMDCs, suggesting that rLZ-8 and PS-G may possess a potential effect in regulating immune responses. In vivo result showed that both rLZ-8 and PS-G reduced airway hyperresponsiveness and serum IgE level. Moreover, PS-G could decrease the level of IL-4, IL-5 in BALF and splenocyte. rLZ-8 reduced IL-5 level in BALF. Although rLZ-8 and PS-G could modulate the response of asthma, the effect of these two molecules should be clarified in the future. Performance Analysis of M/G/1 Queue with Capacity C

    No full text
[[abstract]]In contrast to the conventional queueing system assuming a server can serve custom at a given time, an alternative queueing system in which a server is assumed to be able to serve customs concurrently is proposed in this thesis. In practical applications, the central processor unit with multi-task capacity is a good example of the proposed system. We call this system a queueing system with capacity . This thesis deals with the mathematical analysis of the M/G/1 queue with capacity , with focus on the derivation of mean waiting time for a given set of parameters. In addition, we use the M/M/1 queue to do numerical computation so as to evaluate the impacts of arrival rate and service rate on the mean waiting time and system?s stability

    The M&G Drive

    No full text
abstract: The M&G Drive is a proposed venture project lead by Barrett seniors, Elijah Smith and Jenna Fitzgerald. This project aims to educate Arizona State University (ASU) students on the issues of food insecurity around the Phoenix valley and facilitate their involvement in helping alleviate this pressing social matter. Scientific research has shown significant inverse relationships between food insecurity and the following: mental and physical health, social skills, and academic achievement. As the largest public university in the nation, Arizona State holds a self-ascribed responsibility for the health of its communities. In order to address this issue on behalf of Arizona State and from the standpoint of college students, this proposed venture will encourage the ASU student population to reallocate their unused M&G Dollars (ASU’s on-campus currency) to go toward this cause. Rather than being absorbed back by the university system, unused M&G Dollars can instead be used to purchase non-perishables that will then be donated to the local Phoenix community in order to help fight against food insecurity
