A Study of the causes of Lin Kong and Shuyu Liu's marriage failure as seen in Ha Jin's waiting
This thesis is an analysis of Ha Jin?s novel, Waiting. Although this novel is written in English, it describes the Chinese and their culture. Waiting is about Lin Kong?s and Shuyu Liu?s marriage, which is arranged according to the Chinese tradition. In the end of the novel, their marriage fails. In this study the thesis writer is interested in analyzing the causes in Lin Kong and Shuyu Liu?s marriage failure. She uses literary approach such as characterization and conflict theories to reveal Lin Kong?s reasons in refusing Shuyu Liu as his wife, even though Shuyu?s character is considered perfect as a Chinese woman. The thesis writer describes that there are some causes in the failure of Lin Kong and Shuyu Liu?s marriage. She analyzes that Lin Kong can not love Shuyu, because Shuyu?s appearance is really contrasted with Lin Kong?s ideal wife. The situation of their marriage become worst when the communication between Lin Kong and Shuyu as a husband and wife can not run in harmony because of a wide difference of educational background between them which leads to the different way of thinking. Based on those theories, the thesis writer finds out the answer of Lin Kong and Shuyu?s marriage failure. Finally, she concludes that if someone hopes that their marriage leads to happiness, the reason to marriage should be based on the husband and wife?s willingness not because of an arrangement from another person
LaDDer: Latent Data Distribution Modelling with a Generative Prior
n this paper, we show that the performance of a learnt generative model is closelyrelated to the model’s ability to accurately represent the inferredlatent data distri-bution, i.e. its topology and structural properties. We propose LaDDer to achieveaccurate modelling of the latent data distribution in a variational autoencoder frame-work and to facilitate better representation learning. The central idea of LaDDer isa meta-embedding concept, which uses multiple VAE models to learn an embeddingof the embeddings, forming a ladder of encodings. We use a non-parametric mix-ture as the hyper prior for the innermost VAE and learn all the parameters in a uni-fied variational framework. From extensive experiments, we show that our LaDDermodel is able to accurately estimate complex latent distribution and results in improve-ment in the representation quality. We also propose a novel latent space interpolationmethod that utilises the derived data distribution. The code and demos are available athttps://github.com/lin-shuyu/ladder-latent-data-distribution-modelling

A study of the main characters' struggles againts the tradition and the results of the struggles in the characters' live in Hajin's waiting
The thesis is about Lin Kong, Manna, and Shuyu?s struggles against the tradition as portrayed in Ha Jin?s Waiting. I want to reveal each character?s struggles against the tradition as seen through the conflicts and the results of the struggles on the characters? lives. The analysis is focused on how the three characters are fighting against the tradition to be with the person they love. In order to achieve the purpose of the study that is to reveal the characters? struggles against the tradition and the results of the struggle, I use literary approaches namely characterization and conflict, and also additional information about courtship in Chinese tradition. In the analysis I explain each character?s struggles in their actions against the tradition. I observe that all characters do struggle for showing their love as seen from their characterization and conflicts. As the result, though they fail to break the tradition, they succeed to reach the purpose of their struggle that is to be with the person they love. To reach their purpose Lin Kong sacrifices his career, Manna loses her health, and Shuyu gives up her marriage, yet all of them learn to become mature. Lin Kong learns to accept his life and try to live in it; thus, now he simply prefers a peaceful mind. Manna becomes more sympathize to Shuyu. Shuyu learns that divorce cannot end his relationship with Lin Kong; thus, even after they have divorced, Lin Kong comes to say his true feeling to her. As a conclusion, a long struggle can teach someone to become a better person
Chinese Society’s Point Of View On Divorce In HA Jin’s Novel Waiting
The main interest of this particular study is the Chinese society, portraying their points of view on divorce in the novel Waiting. The author Ha Jin, a Chinese immigrant staying in Boston America, completed this novel in 1999. Waiting, won the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. The aims of this study are to describe the life of the Chinese society which is revealed by the life of Lin Kong as the protagonist. The writer wants to know how strong the desires of the protagonist to get divorce and the character's interpretation of the concept of divorce to the protagonist, Lin Kong, and his wife, Shuyu. The ~ovemment, society, army, hospital, and courthouse will never let a husband divorce his wife. Divorce is taboo and very rare but, Lin Kong is using Commissar's recommendation for divorce. According to the rule in the army hospital established by Commissar Wang in 1958, only after 17 years of separation can an officer end his marriage without his wife's consent. The commissar had died, but for twenty four years the rule had been strictly carried out in the hospital
The structural characteristics of innovation ecosystem: a fashion case
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence of open innovation mechanism specific to aesthetic innovation. Prior research have drawn its research attention to technological innovation and focussed on the biopharmaceutical and technological sectors as the main research contexts. Thus, to gain a wider picture of the structural characteristics of innovation ecosystem, this paper aims to complement the existing technological-centred literature and provides understanding of aesthetic innovation by focussing on exploring the role of actors and intermediaries in either facilitating or inhibiting innovation in the creative sector.
Design/methodology/approach
This is an exploratory study and the qualitative method was employed. With aim to explore aesthetic innovation in the creative sector, this research grounded its context in the UK designer fashion sector, which is part of the creative industries. Data were collected through a series of semi-structured interviews with respondents being purposely selected so as to ensure representativeness. A wider range of participants within the designer fashion sector was covered. Such multiple-sourced data collection approach allowed this research to triangulate data so that research trustworthiness was enhanced.
Findings
The result suggests the role of a broker in beyond traditionally facilitating knowledge exchange. This paper provides empirical evidence regarding the critical role of a broker in shaping the open innovation mechanism when it comes to aesthetic innovation. A broker in fact occupies a strategic position that allows it to negotiate relationships among the connected organisations and thus to govern the interaction mechanism of the innovation ecosystem as a whole. Given the empowered broker in such setting, the relationship between innovation creators and innovation seekers is controlled by a broker, which leads to risk that an innovation creator may not fully appropriate the value that it creates.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of this study is its specific context, that is, the UK designer fashion industry. Such focus limits the scope of generalisation particularly its application to the entire creative sector. Thus, it is suggested that future research may consider to explore other creative industries so that the understanding of the open innovation mechanism from a structural perspective applied to aesthetic innovation can be enhanced.
Originality/value
This paper outlines the structural mechanism of open innovation applied to aesthetic innovation. The result contributes to the literature by complementing the findings derived from technology-centred research. Also, empirical evidence of this study is particularly of value to policy makers in the aspect of creative sector development. The suggested implications provide strategies of innovation ecosystem that could benefit individual actors involved in this open innovation setting and ensure prosper of the sector as a whole

Generalized multiscale finite element methods for the reduced model of darcy flow in fractured porous media
In this work, we combine the generalized multiscale finite element method (GMsFEM) with a reduced model based on the discrete fracture model (DFM) to resolve the difficulties of simulating flow in fractured porous media while efficiently and accurately reducing the computational complexity resulting from resolving the fine scale effects of the fractures. The geometrical structure of the fractures is discretely resolved within the model using the DFM. The advantage of using GMsFEM is to represent the fracture effects on a coarse grid via multiscale basis functions constructed using local spectral problems. Solving local problems leads to consideration and usage of small scale information in each coarse grid. Besides, the multiscale basis functions, generated following GMsFEM framework, are parameter independent and constructed once in what we call offline stage. These basis functions can be re-used for solving the problem for any input parameter when it is needed. Combining GMsFEM and DFM has been introduced in other works assuming continuous pressure across the fractures interface. This continuity is obtained when the fractures are much more permeable than that in the matrix domain. In this work, we consider a general case for the permeability in both fracture and matrix domain using the reduced model presented in Martin et al. (2005). The proposed reduction technique has significant impact on enabling engineers and scientist to efficiently, accurately and inexpensively solve the large and complex system resulted from modeling flow in fractured porous mediaThe first author Manal Alotaibi would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Department of Mathematics at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) under Start-up Research Grant number . Типы ритмических схем в прозе Н. В. Гоголя и их функции в повести "Страшная месть"
The article analyzes rhyme schemes of Gogol's prose on the example of "A Terrible Revenge" from his collection of stories "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka". The purpose of the analysis is to identify typical methods of rhyme patterns and to compare them with the those in Ukrainian and Russian folklore works. The author considers various rhythmic and phonetic techniques in various textual situations and Gogol’s version of transformation of folklore rhythm elements. The urgency of the research consists in analyzing the application of certain rhythmic techniques to certain textual situations and the specification of the general pattern of their use by the author. The material nails distinct patterns of using rhyme schemes, which are presented not only in the analyzed story, but also in all the works of the cycle. The main task was to analyze the text of A Terrible Vengeance, the identification of rhythmic techniques, their description and analysis of binding to textual situations. As a result of the analysis, several patterns of the author's application of rhyme patterns are revealed and the situations in which they are applied are described. The author makes a conclusion that there exists a clear connection of the rhyme scheme with certain described scenes in view of folklore rhythm.В статье анализируются ритмические схемы прозы Н. В.
