A group learning management method for intelligent tutoring systems

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a group management specification and execution method that seeks a compromise between simple course design and complex adaptive group interaction. This is achieved through an authoring method that proposes predefined scenarios to the author. These scenarios already include complex learning interaction protocols in which student and group models use and update are automatically included. The method adopts ontologies to represent domain and student models, and object Petri nets to specify the group interaction protocols. During execution, the method is supported by a multi-agent architecture

SUMMARY Marketing, by means of exchanging, results in obtaining the required products and service. Exchanging, the proceeding steps of value creation, usually will benefit mutually and further the exchanging of mutual values. The essence of marketing is aimed at creating customers\ue2 value and satisfaction. A precise definition to the studies of marketing as given by Philip Kotler is that the profitably contented with the requirement. Marketing is derived from the deeds of profits seeking business, while it can be applied to those none profit seeking individuals or organizations as well. Other than marketing of product and service, the deeds of none profit seeking do care about the marketing of human, the local affairs, concepts and organizations. Marketing for people means the efforts to work out and manage the best advantages for certain individual or a group of people. The most common and prevailing examples can be observed in election campaigns. The campaign assistants work with every effort to look for campaign donations, volunteers, supporters and all sorts of campaign activities. The series of this study will focus on how to manipulate the marketing strategies for the politician. Being as the wife of a political figure, the author nominates Lin Pin-kuen, the senator elected from Peng-hu Hsien, as of the subject of case studies. Throughout four election campaigns, from a rookie to a veteran, suffered the failure in his first campaign while succeed in three consecutive terms, Senator Lin Pin-kuen accumulated profound experience in campaign manipulation and strategies. Senator Lin Pin-kuen\ue2s campaign for Peng-hu Hsien in 2001 is the main topics in this case study. Analyses are built on the basis of marketing strategies and further studies in political activities, the election campaigns. Hopefully, the fulfillment of this case study will accomplish the following concepts: 1. The applications of \ue2marketing concept\ue2 to political party, partisan, campaign strategy and management. 2. The proof of marketing creativity and manipulation is applicable to election campaign. 3. Hoping that the necessity and possibility to apply marketing concept in campaign is unavoidable, so as to upgrade the campaign morality, culture and quality. 4. To prove that marketing theory and technique can be both applied to non-profit seeking realms. Visual Homing for Micro Aerial Vehicles using Scene Familiarity

    No full text
Autonomous navigation is a major challenge in the development of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). Especially when an algorithm has to be efficient, insect intelligence can be a source of inspiration. An elementary navigation task is homing, which means autonomously returning to the initial location. A promising approach uses learned visual familiarity of a route to determine reference headings during homing. In this paper an existing biological proof-of-concept is transferred to an algorithm for micro drones, using vision-in-the-loop experiments in indoor environments. An artificial neural network determines which control actions to take.Control & Simulatio

Assessment on China's urbanization after the implementation of main functional areas planning

    No full text
China has implemented main functional areas planning (MFAP) since 2010, which is essential for improving the efficiency of land space utilization and achieving sustainable urban development. Quantitative assessments of the urban development levels (UDLs) at the county level across China after the implementation of MFAP have not been well-documented. In this study, a unified indicator system was developed, and the UDLs of 2850 counties in China after MFAP implementation were evaluated. The results showed that MFAP played a positive role in urban development in China. The UDLs in China generally increased but showed obvious spatial differences. The higher UDLs were mostly found in the counties in the five urban belts, which reflects the overall urban layout of China. The UDLs were generally low in the western counties in comparison with those in the eastern part of China. The differences in the UDLs from east to west were greater than those from north to south. Moreover, the differences in the UDLs presented a spatial agglomeration effect. This study could offer insight into the refinement of MFAP in China and sustainable urban development in developing countries.Accepted Author ManuscriptHydraulic Structures and Flood Ris

Recycling of ferronickel slag tailing in cementitious materials: Activation and performance

    No full text
As an industrial by-product containing pozzolanic components, recycled ferronickel slag (FNS) has the potential to be supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to reduce the massive carbon footprint of the cement industry, however, the main limitation of ferronickel slag as SCMs is the low hydration rate at an early age. In this study, the pozzolanic activity property results indicate that if the proportion is more than 10 %, FSN can hardly participate in the cement hydration reaction during the early stage, even the mechanical strength of FNS-mortar decreases obviously with the higher proportion of ferronickel slag. Therefore, mechanical grinding and steam curing at an early age are applied to promote the reaction activity of the recycled ferronickel slag tailing in this study. Compared with standard curing, the compressive strength of hardened FNS-cement paste with steam curing at 60 °C or 80 °C increased by 8.2 % or 33.8 %, and the connected porosity decreased by 18.9 % or 17.3 %. And MgO in the ferronickel slag exists as Mg2SiO4 in raw materials and enters the C-S-H gel with the formation of M-S-H gel during the secondary hydration stage. This study provides a theoretical basis for solid waste-based concrete and promotes the recycling, conservation, and resources of solid waste in building materials.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Materials and Environmen

Control of a hybrid helicopter with wings

    No full text
This work investigates the design parameters and their consequences in the control of a helicopter rotor combined with a pair of fixed wings. This hybrid vehicle has a light and aerodynamically efficient rotor with a large range of pitch angles to enable both hover and forward flight. Because of the light stiff rotor and heavy wings, the hybrid vehicle exhibits couplings between the roll and pitch axes during hover flight. The rotor-wing interaction depends on a lot of parameters. In this article, we utilize a simplified theoretic model and simulations in order to gain insight in the effect of these parameters on the vehicle dynamics. Finally, a controller is designed that compensates undesired coupling between pitch and roll

Fast identification of biological pathways associated with a quantitative trait using group lasso with overlaps.

Where causal SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) tend to accumulate within biological pathways, the incorporation of prior pathways information into a statistical model is expected to increase the power to detect true associations in a genetic association study. Most existing pathways-based methods rely on marginal SNP statistics and do not fully exploit the dependence patterns among SNPs within pathways. We use a sparse regression model, with SNPs grouped into pathways, to identify causal pathways associated with a quantitative trait. Notable features of our "pathways group lasso with adaptive weights" (P-GLAW) algorithm include the incorporation of all pathways in a single regression model, an adaptive pathway weighting procedure that accounts for factors biasing pathway selection, and the use of a bootstrap sampling procedure for the ranking of important pathways. P-GLAW takes account of the presence of overlapping pathways and uses a novel combination of techniques to optimise model estimation, making it fast to run, even on whole genome datasets. In a comparison study with an alternative pathways method based on univariate SNP statistics, our method demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of important pathways, showing the greatest relative gains in performance where marginal SNP effect sizes are small

[[abstract]]The Idea and Practice of Robert Owen’s Popular Education:An Example of NewLanark School,1800-1824 In the early 19th century, British government treated education as private affairs, so there was no State system of popular education. As a result, religious institutions and private schools for the poor played important roles during that period. Seeing the impact caused by the change of politics, economy, and social environment, like French Revolution and the industrial revolution, men of insight proposed popular education be the method of deleting the conflicts among different classes, the poverty, and the crime. As the head of the cotton mills, Owen saw the defects resulted from industrialization, he appealed to the British government for setting up popular education system to provide equal chance for people no matter what class they belonged to, what religion they believed in, what sex they were, and what race they were. Owen started his social reform in New Lanark in 1800, and regarded education as the core of it. He even terminated his business partnership twice because of having different opinions about setting up the school with his partners. Therefore, the school was not systematically set up until at last he met his third partner who accepted the ideal of popular education. He asserted that environment decided a person’s character and education would be the most effective factor of all. He wanted to make individuals have good characters by means of education and then let them build an ideal new society. The educational principles of the New Lanark School were child-centered instruction and learning with senses. Instead of using corporal punishment, teachers there helped students establish autonomy and learn actively. People who visited this school were amazed by the harmony between teachers and students and peer group. Between 1816 and 1824, admirers from all over the world came to see this school, so it became an important model school in Britain at the time. At first, this study reviews Owen’s status in educational history from the viewpoint of the historiography of education. Besides, the writer compares the New Lanark School with J. Lancaster and A. Bell monitorial system schools. From longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis in order to understand the evaluation Owen gained and the meaning of setting up the school. At last, the author re-evaluates the idea and practice of Owen’s popular education through the role he played in the school, his status as an educationist, the achievement of the New Lanark School, and the gap between ideal and reality.

An Oppenheim type inequality for positive definite block matrices

    Get PDF
We present an Oppenheim type determinantal inequality for positive definite block matrices. Recently, Lin [Linear Algebra Appl. 452 (2014) 1--6] proved a remarkable extension of Oppenheim type inequality for block matrices, which solved a conjecture of G\"{u}nther and Klotz. There is a requirement that two matrices commute in Lin's result. The motivation of this paper is to obtain another natural and general extension of Oppenheim type inequality for block matrices to get rid of the requirement that two matrices commute.Comment: 12 pages. [[abstract]]The Research on Adults Participating and Learning in Volunteers’ Work at School Peng Ming-sung Abstract The purpose of this paper is to understand the series of actions or operations which parents act as voluntary workers involved in school. In the pursuits of personal participating, voluntary workers significantly improve themselves as well as school and through their efforts they get the sense of identity and find their fulfillment in the life. There are five aims to the study: 1. To understand the motivation and the attitude of voluntary workers’ participating. 2. To understand the relation between volunteers’ service and educational efficiency. 3. To analyze the obstacles which voluntary workers may face in the process of performing their tasks and make some reflections. 4. To compare the alternative mode of volunteers’ learning during the process of participating. 5. Based on the results of this research, to make some suggestions about parents’ learning as voluntary workers. The methodology used is qualitative research--participant observation and in-depth interviewing with five school volunteers. These conclusions are summarized as follows: 1. Charity, family’s support and interpersonal relations are indispensable elements to enhance volunteers’ involvement. 2. By way of learning mechanism, drive school volunteers to learn more and become a lifelong learner. 3. School volunteers significantly influence the school and raise educational efficiency. 4. The traits of school volunteers are reflection, optimism and self-fulfillment in service. 5. With Jarvis’ mode of adult experiential learning, raise the efficiency of volunteers’ service-learning. Based on the conclusion mentioned above, the suggestions are as follows: 1. Community people should take part in schools’ activities enthusiastically. These activities will create their quality learning and help them to reach the self-development in their career. 2. The serving organizations should positively consider the structure and operation of volunteers’ groups and let voluntary workers share their mutual bonds of advocacy and outreach for the school to be the community learning center. 3. The government should exert their authority over integrating all supporting facilities to promote volunteers’ serving. It will let the school become the foundation backbones of community development. 4. It is suggested that further research may be focused on the administrative management and volunteers’ career developments from different aspects in Action Research.
