    Estimating the Asymmetric Effects of Monetary Policy using a Two-Tiered Stochastic Frontier Model

    本文首度採用創新的計量模型-雙層隨機邊界模型-分析貨幣政策在景氣循環下的效果為何。估計變數方面,本文採用Romer and Romer (2004)提出的外生性貨幣政策衡量新指標,作為本文研究貨幣政策效果的依據。此外,本文同時將聯邦資金利率、領先景氣指標和政府財政政策等變數考慮進模型中,以避免文獻上所提出可能的內生性問題。樣本期間的選擇為1970年第一季至1996年第四季的資料。 實證結果發現,聯準會的外生性貨幣政策在景氣低迷時對於實質產出有刺激的效果;然而,在景氣熱絡時對於實質產出的緊縮效果則不顯著。更進一步發現,在1979年代以前的外生性貨幣政策,不論是在景氣熱絡或是低迷時均對於產出均無顯著的影響,而在1985年金融證券化以後的外生性貨幣政策在景氣低迷時的效果則較1985年以前的大且顯著。In this thesis, we first used an innovative econometric model, two-tiered stochastic frontier model, to analyze the effect of monetary policy in different phases of business cycles. In particular, we hypothesized that the monetary policy has different effects in booms (i.e., positive output gaps) and busts (i.e., negative output gaps) over business cycles, and the output gaps are suitably captured by the two-tiered frontier model. We used the US quarterly data from 1970:Q1 to 1996:Q4 as the empirical sample. The stance of monetary policy is measured by the index of Romer and Romer (2004) which is shown to have superior characteristics compared to other measures of monetary policy. Other variables are included in the model to control of the omitted variable problem. Our results show that a positive monetary innovation in recession is more effective than the negative innovation in boom. Furthermore, we find that the monetary policy shock has no significant effect before 1979 in either expansion or recession periods. On the other hand, the monetary policy innovation is larger and more significant in recessions after 1985 than before 1985

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Field Study on Enhancing Fly Ash Removal Efficiency in an Existing ESP by Reducing Flue Gas Temperature

    In recent years, environmental pollution emission standard is getting increasingly stringent around the world. No matter it is newly installed or existing stationary sources, relevant laws and regulations and emission standards are more rigorously reinforced. In Taiwan, the lands are limited and densely populated, and the heavy industrial areas are located fairly close to residential areas. Various health risk assessment results showed high risk level to human health, which makes heavy industries the worst reputation of environmental pollution. In such an unfriendly environment to the factories, it has been a great challenge for the corporations to commit themselves for applying pollution control measures acceptable for the general publics. The object of this study was a 180-ton co-generator. Discussions were made for the improvements on the effectiveness of electrostatic precipitator (ESP) as a particulate control device. Further analysis was conducted on the basis of long-term data monitoring for various operating parameters and opacity as well as the data obtained from sampling and various routine tests to determine the correlation between operating parameters and particulate removal effectiveness of the ESP, and to establish the valuable information for future reference. This study lowered the operating temperature of ESP from 142.51 to 111.41\ue2. The results showed that the emission concentration of the total particulate matter (TPM) decreased from 136 to 23 mg/Nm3, that of PM2.5 decreased from 7.63 to 2.13 mg/Nm3, and the opacity decreased from 14.53 to 9.42%. It suggested that lowering the operating temperature of ESP could significantly improve the emissions of particulate matter. The regression equation of the opacity to the concentration of particulate matter y = 0.5297x2 - 5.87x + 16.212 (r2 = 0.9586), which can be used as a valuable reference for estimating the systematic emissions of ESP. The statistical analysis of the operating parameters of ESP before and after improvements showed a decreasing trend of the corona discharge power, indicating that it could not only increase the effectiveness of ESP, but also achieved the goal of energy saving. In terms of coal composition, the sulfur content was 0.4% before improvement, and the average opacity increased substantially from 13.33~14.83% to 18.77%, suggesting that excessively low sulfur could significantly reduce the particulate removal efficiency of ESP, but no significant difference on the ash content and fly ash of PM in the samples of this study

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
