    Lima Barreto: rupturas

    No full text

Abstract : We pretend to analyse Walter Benjamin´s theses in "Sobre o conceito de história" (On the concept of history) in the literary representation of Lima Barreto, highlighting some important concepts: memory/remembrance, racial discrimination, progress, oppressors/oppressed, exploiters/exploited, discourse/politics and others. We will start with Lima Barreto´s initial idea, that is, of describing the history of the black slavery in Brazil through what he calls "negrismo" in Brazilian literature, while maintaining that this project should not be considered unsuccessful since it can be found in most of his works. If Lima Barreto did not write the intended history, his fiction is drenched with thoughts of a project close to his heart and which, to a certain extent, strongly parallels the theses of Walter Benjamin, especially in regard to human suffering under oppressive and dictatorial political regimes. Therefore, we tried to understand, in the light of the theses developed by Walter Benjamin, to what extent the writer Lima Barreto analyses and understands that phase of the history of Brazil called Rio de Janeiro´s "belle époque", transforming his project into fictional narratives, be they completed or unfinished

This thesis aims at questioning the possible relations between Lima Barreto#s personal writings and chronicles with Vida e Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá (1919), his last published novel. Though widely considered as minor genres, the private writings and chronicles are here seen as points of connections and development of his fictional work, but they also can sometimes be seen as potential works of fiction. The social micro reading, which is typical of Lima Barreto and clearly seen in his personal writings and chronicles, pervades Vida e Morte de M.J. Gonzaga de Sá and it determines the novel#s structure with its uneventful plot, composed of insights into everyday life and of memory recollections. It is not a denunciatory novel as Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha (1909) and neither a realist novel as Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma (1915). Thus, the streetcar, the train, the stamps, and fashion are trails of the modernization process that Brazil was going through and they become the subject of the aleatory conversations between Gonzaga de Sá and Augusto Machado. On the contrary, in Vida e Morte, the fragmentary perception of reality, separated from the characters# actions who are mere observers of the Brazilian bourgeois universe under construction, is the form taken by the novel to tell a story that is written in a different mode. And this is so not because Lima Barreto ignored the rules of the Realist novel, as many critics state, but because he explored a potentiality of writing a novel that, in its fragmentary and diffuse form, would propose a intertextual dialogue with those euphoric times and that would take advantage of the subjects collected over the years in his personal writings and chronicles

    No full text
Abstract : The thought - a concept discussed here as a process linked to the intellectual formation of the subject - can be a multifaceted phenomenon and still remain open. Starting from this premise, the diagnoses elaborated by Lima Barreto (1881-1922) about modernity will be mapped starting from the cultural mediations that have established quite representative icons of modern letters, for example, Anatole France, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Thomas Carlyle and Jules Gaultier. We must clarify in advance that this work is a point of view, among many possible, on relations maintained by Lima Barreto and the written culture that circulated in his time. Search to understand some nuances of intellectual maturation process of this writer, starting from the influences received from foreign literature, does not mean believing in the argument that the creativity of Barreto was a kind of reflection of European ideas. From mainly of Lima Barreto s reading impressions and his personal library catalog, want to compare the literary ideas of this writer with the other brazilian authors that were part of his generation. Through this procedure, is possible work with the perspective that the diagnostics about politic, brazilian modernity and the intellectual life, in the First Republic, made by Lima Barreto, be able to inserteds in documentary contexts more extensive than the local history

Non-Standalone 5G NR FiWi System Based on a Photonic Integrated Multi-Wavelength Transmitter

    No full text
This letter presents a non-standalone 5G new radio (NR) multiband fiber-wireless (FiWi) system implemented using an integrated multi-wavelength transmitter with direct modulation. In this system, three 4G/5G RF signals are simultaneously transported over a 12.5-km long radio over fiber (RoF) link, before being amplified and radiated: a 20-MHz 5G NR signal at 788 MHz; five 20-MHz LTE subcarriers at 2.6 GHz; a 100-MHz 5G NR signal at 3.5 GHz. Wireless transmissions through a 10-m long indoor picocell-like link and a 115-m long realistic outdoor wireless link are demonstrated. All 4G and 5G received signals comply with the 3GPP Release 15 requirements, in terms of EVMRMS, except for 16 QAM at 3.5 GHz on the 115-m link. Experimental results demonstrate a total throughput of 1.36 Gbit/s and 230 Mbit/s on the 10-m and 115-m scenarios, respectively

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    No full text
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
