    Secondary Literacy Across the Curriculum

    No full text
This paper discusses the challenges and possibilities attendant upon successfully implementing literacy across the curriculum initiatives – or ‘school language policies’ as they have come to be known – particularly at the secondary or high school level. It provides a theoretical background to these issues, exploring previous academic discussions of school language policies, and highlights key areas of concern as well as opportunity with respect to school implementation of such policies. As such, it provides a necessary conceptual background to the subsequent papers in this special issue, which focus upon the Secondary Schools’ Literacy Initiative (SSLI) – a New Zealand funded programme that aims to establish cross-curricular language and literacy policies in secondary schools

INTEGRATED ECOLOGICAL PLANNING IN SINGAPORE: NEOTIEWPIA ECO-VILLAGE IN BUSTLING METROPOLITAN

    No full text
ABSTRACT :The Neotiewpia Eco-Village is located within the Lim Chu Kang district at the north of Singapore. The Eco-Village only comprised of 3.5 sq km. Meanwhile the area was dominated by farms, chalets and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. In 2006, National University of Singapore, School of Design and Environment (SDE), MSc. Environmental Management and Nature Society of Singapore initiated an ecological planning exercise within the Neotiewpia site to reduce the environmental impact from the development while providing Eco-friendly Tourism and R&D activities that feasible in the site. We did participate in the exercise and we tried explaining the ecological process, the limitation and potential development for integrated ecological planning framework in Developing Countries like Indonesia, Brazil, etc with high ecological-values ecosystems. The Vision of Neotiewpia was “A Model Eco-Village that Respects its Natural Heritage, Builds Strong Community Links and Promotes Economic Development on Nature’s Premises." And Neotiewpia was successfully planned and designed with integrated ecological planning approach. It embraced the land evaluation and impact assessment. Further the plan was found feasible by the Singapore Government by earmarking the Lim Chu Kang and Kranji for Agri-tainment development in 2008 (although partially implemented). The Neotiewpia or Lim Chu Kang area was found thriving with Green-Economy and Agro-Tourism. This integrated ecological planning could be translated to other areas in Developing Countries with agriculture potential and facing development pressures such as Neotiewpia. This concept would give alternate Green-Solution to the current economic crisis

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

    No full text
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

With great advancements in the technology of smartphones and mobile networking, the global society is beginning to embrace another boom of various wireless networking services and applications. Following this trend, WLAN based networking devices and products have become the most popular means of data communication for supporting these future services. However, contrary to existing QoS researches conducted in WLAN environments, these future applications have unique demands and requirements depending on the type of service they provide. Therefore, as being the primary means of communication in the present and future alike, WLAN based communication technology must account for these difference in services and provide efficient means of supporting QoS for them. This thesis views various scenarios and use cases of WLAN based multi-hop networking environments and analyzes the problems that current WLAN systems may pose. To account for these problems, novel solutions are proposed and analyzed to show that the contributions in this thesis can greatly improve the efficiency of future WLAN based services. Especially, three technologies of supporting QoS are discussed: 1) Enhancing QoS for data dissemination in vehicular speed communications systems, 2) Streaming multimedia surveillance systems, and 3) Power efficient QoS for battery-limited systems. It is expected that each technology can improve the performance of QoS in WLAN based multi-hop networking applications depending on the various requirements that they demand

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Rhinolophus chiewkweeae Yoshiyuki and Lim, 2005 Rhinolophus chiewkweeae Yoshiyuki and Lim, 2005: 29; Gunung Ledang, Tangkak, Muar, Johor, MALAYSIA, 1276 m (Boo-Liat Lim, collector; NSMT-M 33472) [13]. Common English name: Chiewkwee’s Horseshoe Bat Barcode Index Number: There are no DNA barcodes recorded under this name on BOLD. Remarks: R. pearsonii is reported to occur in Peninsular Malaysia [9] although we could not find any precise locality reports. It is likely that the records of R. pearsonii from Peninsular Malaysia, if valid, may actually represent R. chiewkweeae [154]. However, our NJ analysis revealed that the DNA barcodes under these names (but not including Peninsular Malaysia specimens) were 12% divergent in COI mtDNA (see Fig 3 in [154]). IUCN status: Not Evaluated Recorded at: Melaka: Asahan Forest Reserve [13]; Johor: Gunung Ledang and Labis Forest Reserve [13]; Kedah: Lubok Semilan, Ulu Melaka in Pulau Langkawi and Weng Subcatchment Area in Ulu Muda Forest Reserve Forest Reserve [13]; Perlis: Wang Kelian State Park [50]; Perak: Temenggor Lake [69]; Terengganu: Tasik Kenyir [69], Sungai Buweh [154]. R. chiewkweeae has been reported from lowland, hill and submontane dipterocarp forests, and an island [13, 154]. In Peninsular Malaysia, all reported individuals were caught in mature and secondary dipterocarp forests [154]. The low capture rate of R. chiewkweeae suggested that the population density of the species in Peninsular Malaysia is likely to be very low [50, 154]Published as part of Voon-Ching Lim, Rosli Ramli, Subha Bhassu & John-James Wilson, 2017, A checklist of the bats of Peninsular Malaysia and progress towards a DNA barcode reference library, pp. 1-65 in PLoS ONE 12 (7) on page 30, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0179555, http://zenodo.org/record/425135
