Chinese literary works translated into Baba Malay: a bibliographical study
Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency. The University of Malaya Library held the largest number of unique title (62) out of which 15 were unique titles

Excerpt: The main thesis of the book is this: There are “tangled strands” of modernity between the state (Malaya, but more of Singapore/People’s Action Party) and the socialist groups in the post-colonial Malaya and Singapore. !e contest and convergence for being “modern” in the aftermath of independence (or separation of Singapore from Malaya) directs the book’s narratives and description for an alternative Malayan historiography. !e authors’ frame of analysis is clear: Most, if not all, political actors—whether they are the British, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Lee Kuan Yew, Dr. Poh Soo Kai, Lim Ching Siong, or many others—were engaging in a politics of nation-building in its most rationalist sense, a realpolitik using strategies and apparatuses for power. Solutions to the Diophantine Equation x2 + 16 ∙ 7b = y2r
We present a method of determining integral solutions to the equation x2 + 16 ∙ 7b = y2r, where x, y, b, r ∈ ℤ+. We observe that the results can be classified into several categories. Under each category, a general formula is obtained using the geometric progression method. We then provide the bound for the number of non-negative integral solutions associated with each b. Lastly, the general formula for each of the categories is obtained and presented to determine the respective values of x and yr. We also highlight two special cases where different formulae are needed to represent their integral solutions. © Copyright Yow. Impact of ambulance dispatch policies on performance of emergency medical services
In ambulance location models, fleet size and ambulance location sites are two critical factors that emergency medical service (EMS) managers can control to ensure efficient delivery of the system. The ambulance relocation and dispatch policies that are studied in dynamic ambulance relocation models also significantly contribute to improving the response time of EMS. In this paper, we review dynamic ambulance relocation models from the perspective of dispatch policies. The connection between the reviewed ambulance dispatch policies and real-life policies is highlighted. Our ambulance model is based on the modified maximal covering location problem (MCLP). It is used to examine the commonly used dispatch policy and the proposed method of free-ambulance exploitation to further improve urgent call response time. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the response time of urgent calls, especially during low-ambulance-supply period. We also compared the performance of EMS with and without reroute-enabled dispatch
The Resistance Comparison Method Using Integral Controller for Photovoltaic Emulator
A Photovoltaic (PV) emulator is a device that produces a similar output as the PV module and it is useful for testing the PV generation system. This paper present a new and simple control strategy for the PV emulator using the combination of the Resistance Comparison Method with the Integral Controller. The closed-loop buck converter system with the current-mode controlled and the single diode model are used for the PV emulator. The results obtained from the proposed PV emulator are compared with the conventional PV emulator using the Direct Referencing Method as the control strategy. The proposed PV emulator produces a more accurate output, 74 % faster transient response, and a lower output voltage ripple compared to the conventional PV emulator
Evaluating the framework of business process reengineering projects
Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is about work process improvement within an organization. Work process improvements stem from radical changes facilitated by the implementation of BPR projects. This paper aims to determine the factors that must be present in an organisation for a BPR project to be implemented with greater chance of success. The success factors will be determined from the examination of case studies describing organisations that have has success with BPR. A framework, similar to McKinsey’s, will be developed to study all the critical areas within an organisation. This framework will essentially include the factors that the organisation must possess for BPR project implementation to have a greater chance of success. The combined findings for all the cases studied will be integrated to form a final and overall conclusion as to the necessity of organisational factors. Recommendations will also be made as to future work with Business Process Reengineering.BUSINES
