No full textIn this interview Karin Harrasser, author of a recently published book, entitled ‘The Body 2.0’, discusses the relationship between sports, technology, and notions of body enhancement. Focusing on how the Paralympic Games in London 2012 were staged and on the debate around the prostheses (cheetas) of sprinter Oscar Pistorius, Harrasser emphasizes her notion that sports produce ‘superhumans’ that challenge the established ideology of fairness which forms the base of classifying different bodies in sports. Object Knowledge and the Emergence of Language
No full textInfants' spontaneous play with objects was examined for evidence of developments in object knowledge in relation to the emergence of words and the single-word period in language development. Subjects were 7 girls and 7 boys, from different ethnic and economic backgrounds, who were studied longitudinally from 9 months to 26 months of age. Two types of displacements of objects in relation to one another were identified in the children's play: separations and constructions. The development of constructions was associated with the emergence of words, and constructions increased with age while separations decreased. The development of specific constructions, which account for knowledge of the particular properties of objects, was more strongly associated with a vocabulary spurt at the end of the single-word period than with chronological age. Despite the wide variation in the infants' ages when developments in language and play were reached, relations between achievements in the two domains were consistent among them, as confirmed with the Friedman test, p<.001. The results are discussed in terms of the cognitive developments required for play with objects and saying words

No full textDer Artikel ist ein Versuch, schwedische, finnische und polnische Elemente im ersten historischen Roman von Mika Waltari “Karin, Magnustochter“ (im Original: Kaarina, Maunun tytär -1942) einer Analuse zu unterziehen. Der Roman wurde in Anlehnung an das Buch für einen Film (1941) geschrieben und konzentriert sich auf die Schilderung historischer Ereignisse aus der Herrschaftszeit des schwedischen Königs Erik XIV. Die Geschichte seines Lebens, sein Kampf um die Stärkung der eigenen Position in Schweden, sein Streben nach der Erweiterung der schwedischen Vorherrschaft im Ostseeraum im 16.Jahrhundert sowie die damit verbundenen historischen Ereignisse werden auf dem Hintergrund seiner Liebe zu einem einfachen Mädchen aus dem Volk, die er heiratete und zur Königin von Schweden machte, beschrieben. IM vorligenedlen Beitrag ist der Autor bemüht, die Freiwilligkeit des Schriftstellers M.Waltari in der Schilderung mancher historischen Ereignisse hinzuweisen. Im Gegensatz zu seinen späteren historischen Romanen, die sich auf solide historische und archäologische Quellen stützen, reicht der Schriftsteller manchmal nach Quellen, die von ihm nicht gründlich genug recherchiert wurden – er zieht eher Geschichten heran, die unter dem schwedischen Volk vom Hörensagen bekannt sind und in der späteren schwedischen Geschichtsschreibung vervielfältigt wurden. Er schafft auch ein sehr schablonenhaftes, kontrastiertes Bild von Frauenfiguren im Roman: Karin besitzt ausschließlich positive Charaktereigenschaften. Katharina Jagiellonica und ihr Mann Johan III., der Herzog von Finnland und spätere König von Schweden, dagegen ausschließlich negative Eigenschaften.The article is an attempt at analysing the Swedish, Finnish and Polish elements in Mika Waltari’s first historical novel, Karin Månsdotter (1942), which is based on an earlier movie script (1941). The novel describes historical events at the time when Sweden was ruled by King Erik XIV. The story of the king’s life, his efforts aimed at strengthening his position in the country and Sweden’s position in the Baltic Sea region in the 16th century, as well as the connected historical events, are presented with the king’s private life in the background, including his love for a common woman whom he married and made queen of Sweden. The author points out that the novel in question seems to portray historical events somewhat freely. In creating the stories of the main characters, Waltari used unverified sources, such as motives that had been told and retold by common people and some historiographers. This is not the case in his later novels, which are based on verified historical sources. Waltari created a very conventional, highly contrasted image of his female characters: Karin has only positive features, while Catherine the Jagiellonian and her husband John III (the Prince of Finland and later on the King of Sweden) have utterly negative ones
