Beyond borders: Estimating the marginal emission factor of electricity trade

    No full text
Previous research has largely overlooked electricity trade when estimating marginal emission factors (MEFs), despite its growing significance in Europe and beyond. This study introduces a robust and consistent econometric framework to accurately estimate the MEFs for trade, demand, and different supply technologies in a highly interconnected market. We use exogenous supply shocks (variations in wind electricity) in adjacent markets as an instrument for trade flows, which are endogenous to CO emissions, to generate unbiased MEF estimates. Our analysis, applied to high-frequency and publicly accessible data from Germany, reveals that exports are predominantly driven by lignite and hard coal, leading to considerable additional emissions. We further demonstrate that disregarding trade or ignoring its reverse causality results in substantial estimation biases. Unbiased MEF estimates are essential for shaping informed and effective policy decisions aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of energy systems in interconnected markets

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Die Adoption grüner Technologien in Deutschland – Aufsätze über die Aktivierung privater Haushalte

This dissertation provides a behavioural economics perspective on various topics related to the market transfer of sustainable technologies. In particular, the participation of private households in the energy transition in Germany is addressed. Chapter 0 gives a short introduction and an overview of the dissertation. Chapter 1 to 3 constitute independent research articles. While Chapter 2 is already published in a peer- reviewed journal, Chapter 1 and 3 are separately available as working papers. Chapter 1 and 2 are joint research projects with co-authors from Nuremberg, Chapter 3 is single-authored. Chapter 1 examines the motivation of potential adopters to invest in sustainable technologies, using home energy storage as an example. Based on a selective sample of solar panel owners as the main energy storage target group, it is shown that potential adopters differ systematically in their evaluation of economic and non-economic utility-dimensions of home energy storage. Using correlation-based average linkage clustering, four distinct types of storage adopters are identified and subsequently characterized: finance-oriented, independence-oriented, idealistic and multilaterally oriented households. These groups do also differ with respect to sociodemographic and psychographic characteristics. The findings emphasise the need for segment-specific policy strategies and support mechanisms to stimulate home energy storage adoption. Chapter 2 focuses on the organizational setup of pilot, test- and demonstration-projects (PTD) and analyses, whether and how different combinations of institutional cooperation in PTD-governance influence technology perception of potential participants. By means of a survey experiment, it is shown that the organizational setup has a significant impact on a test-product’s perceived contribution to five different dimensions: the energy transition, its establishment in the market, cost-reduction potential, innovativeness and environmental friendliness. In particular, a full organizational cooperation between government, university and industry consistently improves perceptions compared to a partial setup, where only a subset of institutional actors is involved. Regarding the willingness to participate in a PTD, results indicate that communication with and support of potential participants are most influential aspects and even more important than economic benefits. These findings provide policy-makers with a more ample foundation on how pilot projects should be designed to successfully transfer technologies to the market. Chapter 3 investigates the relationship between Feed-in-tariffs (FITs) and consumers’ information search for home energy storage as a proxy for adoption activity. Based on survey data on a selective sample of potential storage adopters from Germany, the information search behaviour of households under different potential profitability conditions is analysed. Results show that potential adopters are more likely to search for home energy storage when potential profitability conditions are already matched at the moment of solar panel installation. Passing FIT-thresholds does not initiate increased search activity. Once households decide to search, search intensity is higher for households facing a lower FIT. In addition to that, non-financial factors such as intrinsic motivation and familiarity with search are associated with higher search activity. These findings suggest that technology-adoption policies should consider holistic effects on consumers’ choice architecture, cross- technological FIT-effects might need to be made more salient amongst solar panel owners, and that (retrofit) HES installation should be monitored closely for signs of consumer inertia. In summary, the studies presented in this dissertation make various contributions to different topics in the area of sustainable technology adoption. They offer novel insights into mechanisms to incentivize participation by private households and provide a basis for future studies in technology-specific, consumer-focused research on green technology diffusion. In particular, the results in all three studies point out the importance of incorporating behavioural effects in both economic research and policy-making.

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Behind the distribution transformer: Real-world data-driven case studies of the energy transition - Solar Photovoltaics and Electric Vehicles in Residential Communities

    Get PDF
In order to mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, the ongoing energy transition necessitates the rapid decarbonization of the electricity and mobility sectors. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles (EVs) are at the forefront of the transition, especially in cities and urban regions that are centres of human population and consumption. For an unhindered transition, particular focus is required on the backbone that supports both these technologies - the electric grid. Both PV systems and EVs create operational issues on the distribution grid level, particularly the overloading of distribution transformers due to considerably increased power flows. Since distribution system operators have typically followed a fit-and-forget approach to grid equipment and lack active grid monitoring, it is crucial for them to understand whether the existing grid can cope with the needs and challenges of the energy transition, and whether relying on EVs may even provide solutions to grid issues. Therefore, this thesis aims to generate actionable recommendations for distribution system operators to (a) estimate and avoid distribution transformer overloading due to solar PV generation exports and EV charging demand, and conversely, (b) estimate the potential of EVs as a resource for grid support. In contrast to most existing works that rely on standardised or artificially generated electricity and mobility profiles, this thesis employs real-world data in its analyses. This enables the inclusion of heterogeneous human behaviour and the resulting variance in load demand, crucial for the focus on distribution transformers that serve residential communities with small numbers of households. The four studies in this thesis employ real-world data-driven systematic simulation analyses over multiple simulation runs across various residential community configurations and scenarios. This helps account for rare, problematic power balance instances that may otherwise not be captured in one-shot optimization or simulation runs with artificial load profiles. The findings provide clear permissible PV and EV penetration levels that distribution transformers supplying residential communities of varying sizes can sustain, in the absence of energy storage and load flexibility options, and synergetic linkages between PV generation and EV charging. Crucially, existing transformer sizing conventions imply that available hosting capacities of transformers decrease as community sizes increase. The findings of this thesis therefore recommend how sizing conventions can be updated to account for PV generation exports and EV charging loads. In prioritizing the avoidance of transformer overloading, the findings from the thesis also shed light on the trade-offs with the potential benefits that other stakeholders of PV systems and EVs aim for. Finally, the results of this thesis quantify the potential of curtailing EV charging to provide instantaneous support to grid operators in times of excessive demand. This is readily implementable without the need for infrastructure upgrades or deploying smart charging, by leveraging direct communication with EVs and relying on existing utility expertise in incentive-based demand response programs. Implementing this technique may alleviate transformer overloading and allow greater EV penetration in residential communities. Overall, the findings of this thesis generate actionable recommendations for grid operators to estimate and avoid transformer overloading. Stakeholders of PV systems and EVs can estimate the benefits of the technologies and evaluate trade-offs that may arise due to avoiding transformer overloading being considered a priority. Implementation of the recommendations of this thesis may therefore allow for an unhindered energy transition in residential communities, essential in the mitigation of climate change.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
