Children’s cities. From pedagogical mise en scène to the appropiation of the city
The author analyses the projects from the point of view of the extent to which they promote children’s active citizenship and contribute to the transformation of adultist and exclusionary and adult-centred structures of the cities in the children’s best interests
(Autorenreferat)"The author discusses the question, what children's citizenship in contemporary society can imply and what the preconditions for such a citizenship are. To this end, he introduces different concepts of citizenship and discusses them under the aspect of their relevance for children and their chances of realisation. A special emphasis lies on one form of citizenship that develops in the context of children's social movements, which the author calls 'citizenship from below'. In this concept not only claims to protection, public services and participation are manifested, but a practice that is based on self-organisation and the possibility of a formative role of children in society is underlined."
The concept of the best interests of the child is one of the leading principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. In order to understand it as reference and possible impulse for the agency of children, the author analyzes this principle together with another principle codif ied in the Convention: the principle of the evolving capacities. In order to relate it with children’s real life, the author discusses different forms of understanding this principle, which go beyond legal aspects. With reference to the Capability Approach, he concludes with a review of the assumptions on the development and acknowledgement of children’s capacities as well as the requirements for their realization.
(Autorenreferat)"This contribution deals with the little attention paid until now to the age-based discrimination of children in the human and children's rights debate. After a conceptual discussion of different concepts and forms of discrimination, the author develops and describes - with a view to children - a typology of four different patterns of age-based discrimination: measures and punishments against unwanted behavior in children which is tolerated or considered normal in adults; measures justified by children's special need for protection but in the long run additionally disadvantage children; limited access of children - compared to adults - to rights, goods, facilities and services; failure to consider the social group of children in political decisions that will have negative effects on the later lives of children and on following generations. The author understands his contribution as a challenge to develop a theory on the dimensions of inequality in childhood and children's rights research." (author's abstract
With the intention to understand the significant aspects of the movements and organizations of working children (NATs), that have sprung up in various regions of the Southern hemisphere since the 1980s, the author refers to a concept of the child as a subject, that is able to interpret his realities and to act in a conscious way. Firstly, he questions whether there is a common ground shared by the working children and their organizations. Secondly, he discusses the category social subject asking to what extent it represents this common ground, but also on which social and cultural prerequisites the discourse on social subjects depends. Thirdly, the author questions what possible effects these organizations have on the children themselves and on the society they live in. Finally, he concentrates on the implications that the subjectorientated approach has for the understanding of the phenomena of children’s work in its whole complexity, particularly in its significances for the working children
Paternalism, Participation and Children’s Protagonism
* Focus on Latin America | Research Articles
Referring to the Working Children and Adolescents’ Movements (NATs) of Latin America, the paper explains the concepts and expressions of children’s protagonism as an answer to typical paternalistic social structures and reduced concepts of participation. After distinguishing traditional from modern kinds of paternalism, the paper demonstrates the ways in which NATs challenge paternalism and explains the origins of the debate over children’s protagonism. The paper then discusses the different forms, previous conditions, appropriate elements and different levels of realization of children’s protagonism. The author concludes that children’s protagonism requires from society the amplification of children’s possibilities to participate not only in “children’s matters,” but in all issues of society; in other words, to recognize children as citizens
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
