Human rights and deprivation of liberty

    No full text
The world of custodial work today at all latitudes as a reality that we are shown preceded by a series of veils, the type of work we develop can lift more or less veils, but in any case we never see what actually happens in a prison or penitentiary, who can only do suffer the deprivation of liberty, I mean, an occasional visitor, official watchdog, enforcement judge, researcher, member support network, etc.. get to see much more than those who do not ever enter an establishment, even though their perception is clouded by multiple veils. It is therefore necessary to strengthen the debate on the situation of fundamental human rights of persons deprived of liberty in detention in Colombia

The research "the state of the fundamental rights of people deprived of liberty in correctional and prison institutions in Medellín" dealt with defining the historical and the current context of institutions of deprivation of liberty in the municipality of Medellín. Based on that, those that have existed in the municipality are described, as well as those which currently exist for the deprivation of liberty for the members of the National Police, the National Army, and civilian adult men and women. As a way to demonstrate that the deprivation of liberty is discriminated in various types of those institutions, and that those which were built as the solution to huge prison and penitentiary problems, are simply part of the problem.

African origin of the malaria parasite Plasmodium vivax.

    No full text
Plasmodium vivax is the leading cause of human malaria in Asia and Latin America but is absent from most of central Africa due to the near fixation of a mutation that inhibits the expression of its receptor, the Duffy antigen, on human erythrocytes. The emergence of this protective allele is not understood because P. vivax is believed to have originated in Asia. Here we show, using a non-invasive approach, that wild chimpanzees and gorillas throughout central Africa are endemically infected with parasites that are closely related to human P. vivax. Sequence analyses reveal that ape parasites lack host specificity and are much more diverse than human parasites, which form a monophyletic lineage within the ape parasite radiation. These findings indicate that human P. vivax is of African origin and likely selected for the Duffy-negative mutation. All extant human P. vivax parasites are derived from a single ancestor that escaped out of Africa

    No full text
Keywords: Chronic illness in Latin American Literature, Women’s narratives of illness, Illness writing, Mental health narratives, Body and illness, Diario del dolor, Las muertes chiquitas.  Abstract: This article explores the ways that Mexican author María Luisa Puga and Colombian journalist and writer Margarita Posada articulate the intricacies of experiencing chronic illness, offering a novel interpretation of suffering that exposes the multifaceted dimensions of living with illness as women. By examining their works, namely Diario del dolor (2004) and Las muertes chiquitas (2019), the article discusses the creativity with which Puga and Posada approach the experience of illness, immersing readers in emotions and experiences that, even for medical professionals, often remain inaccessible. The paper investigates how writing acts as a lifeline amidst agonizing and traumatic events, empowering both authors to reclaim, redefine, demystify, and reshape their illnesses on their own terms. Additionally, this study scrutinizes the act of writing about illness as a form of resistance and activism, bringing to light the marginalized and stigmatized bodies of women afflicted by illness. Through their personal accounts, Puga and Posada join a community of women constructing a foundation of knowledge to bridge the gaps left by medicine, revealing experiences, sentiments, and realities frequently disregarded or silenced. Their narratives lay the groundwork for other women grappling with chronic or incurable diseases, transforming Diario del dolor and Las muertes chiquitas into indispensable readings that play a pivotal role in dismantling the societal taboos and stigmas intertwined with the experience of illness. In the present article the author analyses the work of the engraver José Guadalupe Posada and the painter Diego de Rivera and establishes the connection between the Mexican wall-painting ("corrido"), considered asan example of as popular poetic inspiration and the plastic arts in the 20th century. The object of Posada's "corrido gráfico" was to provide daily information about current events, and in doing so the engraver created characters who became extremely popular. And Rivera transforms these popular engravings into a visual epic which has become part of the Mexican national memory. His works, which combined figuration and epigraphy, achieved great importance since they were placed in public buildings.

Pictorial broadside that presents an illustration and verse critical of U.S. imperialism--i.e., the United States is likened to a mosquito. Half sheet, printed recto and verso on bright orange paper. Zinc etching. Unsigned. Ron Tyler, author of "Posada's Mexico" (Washington: Library of Congress and Amon Carter Museum, 1979) states on page 103: "Perhaps the tourists who were just beginning to be a common sight throughout the republic were the dreaded mosquito. . . Another possibility is that mosquito referred to the many Americans President Díaz was bringing in to handle the railroads, the mines, and other technical aspects of Mexico's development. A third possibility is that the term referred to the already ubiquitous American dollar.

El cancionero popular. Num. 2. Jesus Negrete, El Tigre de Santa Julia.

Pictorial broadside that features a full-length portrait of Jesús Negerete in sombrero and charro outfit. Half sheet, printed recto and verso, salmon paper. Zinc etching. In "Posada's Mexico" (Washington: Library of Congress, 1979) the author Ron Tyler reproduces a photograph that may have been the basis for this etching and states on page 16 & 17: "One of the most famous of the bandits that infested Mexico during the early twentieth century was Jesús Negrete, called 'the Tiger of Santa Julia.' He had a record of crimes that was virtually unending.... Negrete was finally arrested when a member of the reserves received a tip and was able to surprise him on a cochineal plantation in Puerto Pinto de Tacubaya. But the story did not end there. Negrete escaped from Belén with four other prisoners soon after he was jailed. Finally, in 1908 he was convicted and sentenced to die. His appeals were exhausted in 1910. Meanwhile, he had become a model prisoner, learning to read and write and make cabinets. The warden of Belén testified to his progress and Negrete apparently expected to receive a pardon from Díaz, but the execution order was carried out on December 21, 1910.
