Prosody Learning Strategies and What English Philology Students Know about Them
Although learning strategies are in the focus of attention of both theorists and foreign language teachers,
only few scientific descriptions highlight the significance of the prosodic skills and strategies to practice them. This
paper discusses the results of the questionnaire the aim of which was to determine English philology students’ under
-
standing of prosody and prosodic skills as well as to identify prosodic strategies they use to improve their pronuncia

tion in English. We can conclude that students understand prosodic phenomenon of language but they cannot define
it, and they apply a variety of activities that develop prosodic skills.Ewa Lewicka-Mroczek : [email protected] Szymaniuk: [email protected] Lewicka-Mroczek (Ph.D.) is an applied linguist, methodology teacher and teacher trainer at the Faculty of Philology, University of Bialystok and Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Poland. Abstract
Introduction. Children's and adolescents' injuries are a serious medical problem, as they lead to substantial medical and socio-economic effects.
Aim of the paper. The aim of the conducted research was to analyze incidence and causes of hospitalizing children between birth and 18 years of age on the grounds of injuries.
Material and methods. Medical histories of 2 832 children between birth and 18 years of age treated for injuries in 2006-2010 in Wladyslaw Bieganski Regional Specialist Hospital in Grudziadz were analyzed.
Results. Correlations between treatment method and subsequent years of research (p<0,05), between children's age group and type of injury, and between type of injury and season of the year and hospitalization time, were shown to be statistically significant. No correlation was found in the studied population between subsequent years of research and injury types or residence of the injured.
Conclusions. 1. The most frequent causes for placing children in the hospital were cranioencephalic injuries, injuries to the osteoarticular system, and burns. 2. The children's age determined the type of injury inflicted. Children in the youngest age group were most frequently hospitalized for burns, children in the age of 3-6 years for foreign bodies, and in the group of 7-18 years of age for injuries to the chest and to the osteoarticular system. 3. Boys were more frequently injured in a manner requiring hospital treatment than girls were. 4. A decisive majority of injured children required only conservative treatment and a stay in the hospital for no more than 3 days. 5. A constant tendency of higher occurence of injuries in children during spring and summer, was observed.

Summary
Nebulization is a therapeutic treatment which consists in loading the drug to the respiratory tract as an aerosol for local and systemic effects. Today in respiratory medicine nebulization is increasingly used as a non-aggressive method for the rapid delivery of the drug in any region of the affected airways. This method does not require the coordination of the patient any contribution of respiratory function of stress in the inspiration phase and is therefore widely used in pediatrics.
The aim of the article is to present the proper techniques of nebulization.
Lack of knowledge regarding nebulization techniques among both parents and medical personnel leads to errors that affect the therapeutic process. Widely understood development of medical science enforces continuous education not only health care workers, but as well patients and their careers. Medication administration using aerosol therapy is complex and absolutely requires close cooperation between the child, parents and device based on detailed knowledge of the proper techniques of surgery.

Użycie języka ojczystego na lekcjach języka angielskiego – opinie studentów filologii angielskiej
For years there have been debates among applied linguists and in-service teachers as to whether to allow any inclusion of learners’ mother tongue in the process of foreign language teaching. Since second language acquisition theories do not offer a precise answer, the actual use of the first language in the classroom depends on the beliefs of teachers and learners. Recent research studies concerning teachers and students’ views on whether learners’ L1 should be present or avoided in the teaching context seem to suggest that at present the controlled use of the L1 is perceived as beneficial. This article presents the results of a survey study on the perception of the usefulness of the L1 conducted among pre-service teachers of English at the University of Białystok. The findings support the view that the purposeful employment of the L1 may result in an increase in learning outcomes. Ewa Lewicka-Mroczek: [email protected] Wajda: [email protected] Ewa Lewicka-Mroczek - Uniwersytet w Białymstoku, Wydział Filologiczny, Instytut Neofilologiidr Edyta Wajda - Uniwersytet w Białymstoku, Wydział Filologiczny, Instytut NeofilologiiAtkinson D., Teaching Monolingual Classes, London 1993.Auerbach E.R., Reexamining English only in the ESL classroom, “TESOL Quarterly” 1993, 27/1, s. 9–32.Brooks-Lewis K.A., Adult Learners’ Perceptions of the Incorporation of their L1 in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning, “Applied Linguistics” 2009, s. 216–235.Carson E., Kashihara H., Using the L1 in the L2 classroom: The students speak, “The Language Teacher” 2012, 36.4, July/August, s. 41–48.Cheng X., Research on Chinese college English teachers’ classroom code-switching: Beliefs and attitudes, “Journal of Language Teaching and Research” 2013, 4, s. 1277–1284.Dulay H., Burt H., Krashen S., Language Two, Oxford 1982.Gebhard J.G., Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Ann Arbor 1996.Howatt A.P.R., A History of English Language Teaching, Oxford 1984.Imran S., Wyatt M., Pakistani university English teachers’ cognitions and classroom practices regarding their use of learners’ first languages, “Asian EFL Journal” 2015, 17(1), s. 138–179.Kim S., Elder C., Language choices and pedagogic functions in the foreign language classroom: A cross-linguistic functional analysis of teacher talk, “Language Teaching Research” 2005, 9, s. 355–380.Knight T., Learning vocabulary through shared speaking tasks, “The Language Teacher” 1996, 20, 1, s. 24–29.Krashen S., The Input Hypothesis: Issues and Implications, New York 1985.Laufer B., Shmueli K., Memorizing new words: Does teaching have anything to do with it, “RELF Journal” 1997, 28, 1, s. 89–108.Lewicka-Mroczek E., Potocka D., Język ojczysty na lekcji języka obcego.
