J.C. Painter letter to Benjamin Lundy
Letter from J.E. Painter to (presumably) Benjamin Lundy, answering a request for information about the history and operations of the Underground Railroad. Letter includes details of a story of an ex-slave transported on the Underground Railroad through Ohio and stories of the plight of other fugitive slaves crossing the Ohio River.
Benjamin Lundy (1789-1839) was a prominent Quaker abolitionist best known for his development of abolitionist periodicals. His "Genius of Universal Emancipation" was first published in 1821 from his home in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and enjoyed a wide circulation across the antebellum United States. In the 1820s, the young William Lloyd Garrison came to work for The Genius. Benjamin Lundy traveled widely seeking subscriptions to The Genius, giving talks about the anti-slavery movement, and observing and documenting the conditions of enslaved people across the Americas. He was also involved in the establishment of freed slave colonies in Mexico

Legal document from an unsigned officer to Benjamin Lundy, authorizing him rights as empresario to a tract of land in then-Mexico. The document extends a previous treaty made to Lundy by the government of Mexico from November 17, 1823 -- presumably, this land is to be the site of Lundy's freed slave colony. This document appears to be truncated; it ends abruptly after 2 pages. Collection also includes a period translation of this contract with Lundy in English, which appears to contain the full text of the agreement. International audienceThrough the analysis of Timecode (Mike Figgis, 2000) and of The Last Call (Jung Von Matt, 2008), we are working on a link between film aesthetics and the notion of unpredictability. These two examples challenge the device of projection and reception so as to modify the traditional way in which a spectator relates to a movie. These films invite their spectators to rediscover what produces a viewing experience : the first one explores the connection between movie and spectators and the second one investigates the connection between audience and protagonists. The two films partly update the theories of film aesthetics and underline certain principles of film viewing that Walter Benjamin and Stanley Cavell worked out. The purpose of this paper is to present these works in the context of the New Information and Communication Technologies.A partir de l'analyse de Timecode (Mike Figgis, 2000) et de The Last Call (Jung Von Matt, 2008), nous envisageons une relation entre l'esthétique du cinéma et la notion d'imprévisibilité. Ces deux exemples exploitent le dispositif de projection et de réception de telle sorte que cela modifie la relation traditionnellement établie du spectateur au film. Ils invitent leurs spectateurs à redécouvrir ce qui constitue une expérience spectatorielle au cinéma : le premier problématise le rapport film / spectateurs et le second le rapport public / protagonistes. Ils réactualisent une partie des théories de l'esthétique du cinéma : ils soulignent certains principes du spectacle cinématographique, tels que Walter Benjamin et Stanley Cavell les ont repérés. Cela nous permet de poursuivre leurs travaux sur la médiation cinématographique en l'inscrivant dans le contexte des Nouvelles Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication. A travers leurs contenus et leurs processus, nos deux exemples engagent la place du cinéma dans l'économie symbolique des médias et offrent au spectateur une compréhension nouvelle de son statut.
