Voor 't gewone leven ongeschikt. Een biografie van Clare Lennart
Voor ’t gewone leven ongeschikt. A biography of Clare Lennart, is a literary and historical biography of author Clare Lennart (Clara Helena van den Boogaard-Klaver, 1889-1972). Her work contains many recognisably autobiographical elements, especially from her youth. An extensive overview of the life of this 'forgotten author' is the basis for this critical and interpretive biography. In addition it shows Clare Lennart's unique position in her time, the unusual choices she made and ‘the roads not taken’ in her life. The main focus of the research is the question of how Clare Lennart gained an economic position as a woman of letter. A second question focuses on the concepts of posture and self-fashioning. The thesis demonstrates that Clare Lennart was aware of her image as a 'poetic nature lover' and that she openly presented herself as a hack writer. Clare Lennart's poetic style nowadays seems more dated than the sober language used by contemporary authors. Nevertheless, she had a large audience between 1945 and 1972 and the reception was nearly always positive. The biography discusses the contemporary reception of her work in detail and why Clare Lennart's work is omitted from the Dutch canon, using the concept of ‘middle-brow’ literature.Modern and Contemporary Studie

The Cat Blows in the Silver Horn… On Lennart Hellsing’s Poetry, and Its Folk-inspired Musicality
The literary works of Lennart Hellsing have had a significant impact on the rise of modern Swedish books for children. Having worked closely with outstanding illustrators and eminent composers, the author created an ultimate masterpiece which, at the same time, became an alternative to the aesthetics of the turn of the century, still dominant in the 1940s. Turning towards the new did not mean that the author wished to cut off his works from tradition. This article aims at presenting how Lennart Hellsing used rhythmical, syntactical and melodic structures originating in Swedish folklore on different levels of his literary achievements. A very special place in Hellsing’s writing was occupied by the folk song, which in his works was also present in a network of intertextual ties
Policies of Minority Quotas and Discrimination in Higher Education: A case from Sweden
Lennart Wikander looks at the Swedish example of increasing the proportion of immigrants in Higher Education to illustrate the conflicts between policies in different areas when transformed into action plans. The increasingly multicultural Europe also has to develop a multicultural labour market with representation from different groups in all areas and at all levels. In this chapter the author highlights the conflicts between Minority Quotas and discrimination.</p
The 'Third Way' Revisited. A Revaluation of the Swedish Model in the Light of Modern Economics.
The macroeconomic principles behind the Swedish model were developed by two trade union economists, Gösta Rehn and Rudolf Meidner, shortly after World War II. The model’s economic and wage policy represents a unique third way between keynesianism and monetarism in its approach to combine full employment and growth with price stability and equity. This essay describes the content and economic foundation of the Rehn-Meidner model and evaluates its validity in the light of later theoretical and empirical work. With some exceptions, the model is either in harmony with or a serious challenge to current thinking about employment, inflation and growth. The model’s main contribution to economics is its dynamic description of wage formation, giving room for both competitive forces, X-inefficient firms and wage setting phenomena such as relative wage preferences, labour market policy and a wage policy of fairness. The model also makes a valuable contribution to modern growth economics by incorporating the idea that structural change and company productivity can be promoted by profit squeezes induced by wage and economic policy.Profits; Inflation; Fair Wages; Labour-market policy; Fiscal Policy; Employment; Productivity; Structural change
Lennart Nilsson's Fish-Eyes : A Photographic and Cultural History of Views from Below
This article examines the Swedish photo-grapher Lennart Nilsson’s wide-angle imagery in its production and circulation contexts from the mid-1960s to the 1980s. It focuses in particular on a sample of photographs, labelled “fish-eye” because of the specific nature of their distorted perspective, which he produced for magazines, books and films during this period. The aim is to shed light on how these pictures contributed to stimulating an alternative mode of spectatorship, the view from below, challenging the viewing position created by the traditional linear perspective of painting and photography. The author shows how an immersive and transparent experience of the images could exist side by side with its apparent opposite: the hypermediated experience of the same type of image. It is also suggested that Nilsson’s fish- eye photographs have been important in naturalizing a specific way of seeing foetal life in contemporary visual and media culture
In Wien kann man zwar nicht leben, aber anders wo kann man nicht l e b e n : Kontinuität und Veränderung bei Raoul Auernheimer
This thesis deals with the nowadays largely unknown Austrian author Raoul Auernheimer (1876-1948). It is an attempt at a presentation of his life and work, the main part dealing with four of his works, the play Talent (1900), the long story Laurenz Hallers Praterfahrt (1913), the novel Das Kapital (1923) and the autobiographical report Die Zeit im Lager (1939). My purpose is to investigate to what extent his works reflect time, Auernheimers life and the city of Vienna. An introductory chapter on life and work deals with the most important events in his life. It is clear, that he was one of the major personalities in the field of culture in Vienna before and after World War I and an outstanding intellectual who stood for democratic values. When he was 61 the Nazis forced him to leave Austria, after first having put him into the concentration camp Dachau for five months. He was then in exile in the USA where, in spite of a heart condition, he lived on for nine more years. A section on secondary literature and an almost complete catalogue of his works show their versatility, scope and scale. In this context, his significant role as a drama critic, journalist and essayist becomes evident. The city of Vienna is a central theme in the four works I examined and each date of origin (1900, 1913, 1923, 1939) is significant for the work itself. Work and date indicate radical changes in his literary production and constitute a step in the direction of becoming a person who thinks politically. However these changes meant very little to his literary style, which shows continuity. In his works he basically remains a Feuilletonist and playwright. More and more Auernheimer shows his solidarity with the vulnerable groups of society. This is conveyed indirectly, virtually through ‘participating observation‘. By each time describing conditions accurately and exactly, he criticizes current deficiencies. Concerning language it is apparent, that irony is important to his style. Since he views his world critically, he uses it to make social conditions clear. The style of the Feuilleton, in which linguistic brilliance and harmony of text are important components, is characteristic of this author. It is the style of the journalist and critic. Price Indexes For Multi-dwelling Properties In Sweden
The econometric test in this paper indicates that standard property and municipality attributes are important determinants of sales prices for MDCBs (multi-dwelling and commercial buildings) in Sweden. I also employ spatial econometric techniques and find that spatial specified regressions improved the models? explanatory power. The constant quality price for a model estimated with OLS is roughly one percentage point higher than for a model controlling for spatial autocorrelation. When the constant quality price trend is estimated on a yearly basis, there are hardly any differences between the estimated parameters, notwithstand-ing if all MDCBs are in the sample or if the sample is split into sub markets. However, estimating models with a quarterly constant quality price trend to some extent shows different price trends for the three sub markets.
Presidentide Lennart Meri ja Arnold Rüütli representatsioon Eesti ja Soome trükimeedias riigivisiitide kajastamisel Soome
The goal of this Bachelor’s Degree Thesis was to analyse the representation of President
Lennart Meri and President Arnold Rüütel in the Estonian and Finnish printed mass media in
the course of reporting on their state visits to Finland. The conducted content analysis covered
four Estonian weekly and daily newspapers and three Finnish weekly newspapers, totalling 50
articles. An additional analysis was carried out of articles published immediately after the
presidential elections (the sample has 69 articles) for the purpose of mapping out the
representation of the presidents in the same channels after the presidential elections and
compare it to that established during state visits.
When Lennart Meri was elected President, the domestic media was discreet in reflecting the
news. But when Arnold Rüütel was elected President, the media reacted to the event in an
extremely active manner. Here the author would like to point out that several Estonian
newspapers had special presidential election columns. The opposite was true of the state visits
– that made to Finland by Lennart Meri was reflected in a more active manner than the state
visit of Arnold Rüütel. The latter was never front page news in Estonian newspapers.
The Finnish printed media reflected the presidential election results and the state visits in a
relatively similar manner – no such remarkable differences can be noted as the ones observed
in the Estonian printed media. In both cases, the dedicated positive attitude of the Finnish
media toward Lennart Meri should be stressed.
The topics reflected during the state visit of the President in 1995 differ somewhat from those
discussed in 2001 as certain changes took place during those six years in Estonia and Finland,
as well in the world as a whole. The most remarkable change can be observed in the topic
columns on “culture and history.” Namely, in 1995 such topics had been of vital importance
in the printed media of both countries, while in 2001 their importance receded almost to zero.
A closer examination of the newspaper articles indicates that during the state visit of 1995 the
stress was more on the history of Estonia and Finland as two kindred nations, the first
President of Estonia and the period that had passed since his visit. Also, the schedule for
Lennart Meri contained more cultural events than the state visit of 2001. It is interesting to
observe that in 2001 the Estonian and Finnish media displayed more unity in the topics reflected than they had in 1995. The active attitude of the Estonian media was noteworthy
regarding the topic of medals – surprisingly, during both state visits.
When comparing media reflections in the two countries, one difference between the domestic
and foreign newspapers is the presence or lack of accusatory and ironic stories. During neither
of the visits did the Finnish printed media have negative-attitude stories related to the visit of
our President.
The optimistic and satisfied Finnish attitude of 1995 changed into a neutral one in 2001, with
no more impassionate stories, although the relations between the two countries remained
excellent. Nor could such impassionate stories be found in the Estonian printed media in 2001
– here the state visit reflection also became more diplomatic.
The greatest difference in the Estonian and Finnish media was that of quoting the Presidents.
The Finnish printed media’s quotations of the Presidents during the two state visits total 128
sentences in the analysed articles. The domestic media deemed it necessary to quote the
Presidents during the same period with only 53 sentences.
The attitude toward the President during the corresponding state visit was generally the same
both in Estonia and Finland. The President as the representative of the state and
simultaneously an exciting personality – this was the picture of Lennart Meri in the media of
both countries. President Meri was represented in his presidential institutional capacity and as
a personality in the Estonian and Finnish media. On the contrary, the picture of President
Arnold Rüütel during his state visit was discreet. President Rüütel in the Finnish media is
primarily the President of Estonia, without an outstanding personality, and the attention given
to him cannot be compared to the attention enjoyed by President Meri. The Estonian media
never praises Rüütel by quoting an opinion leader – he is only praised for being in the right
place at the right time.http://tartu.ester.ee/record=b1738718~S1*es
