Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

No full textThroughout history, sport has been believed to promote integration, insertion, cohesion and social peace. This thesis focuses on the theme of local youth and sports policies in the priority neighbourhoods of six towns (municipalities) of Ile-de-France, the region around Paris. The basis for the study is the analysis of interviews (59) conducted with municipal stakeholders (elected officials, directors, sociocultural coordinators, etc.), who coordinate the actions on this topic. Additionally, two questionnaires were used. The first one surveyed all departments in charge of youth and sports in the Paris region (69), in order to get an overview on the actions taken in the disadvantaged urban area. The second (508) asked youth in sports club of Meaux, a town near Paris, to qualify their mobility and accessibility in different areas of the city, as well as their ability to create friendships with other sports club members living in a different urban area. Finally, a review of ministerial databases on sports license holders and sports equipment was conducted and reports highlighting sport as a tool against crime prevention were scrutinized. In general terms, this thesis makes it possible to identify how the towns (municipalities) use the various governments co-financing schemes that support sports equipment, on the one hand and sociocultural activities, on the other hand. At the crossroads of public policies on youth, sports and urban development, this research focuses on the actions carried out by the various players involved, while also researching whether young people are treated differently, throughout distinct structures and modes. The results tend to show complex and disparate municipal situations, especially regarding how co-financing schemes for sports equipment and socio-cultural activities are used. In addition, the research clearly points out a lack of efficiency from public institutions regarding the social mix between young people living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods and those living outside them. Nevertheless, it seems that sports clubs can nurture strong social links between these two populationsDe nombreuses actions et réflexions historiquement situées ont conféré au sport des vertus qui favoriseraient l'insertion, l'intégration, la cohésion ainsi que la paix sociale. Cette thèse porte sur le thème des politiques locales en charge de la jeunesse et des sports dans les quartiers prioritaires de six communes d’Île-de-France. L’étude se base sur l’analyse d’entretiens (59) menés avec des acteurs municipaux (élus, directeurs, intervenants de terrain, etc.) qui coordonnent leurs actions sur ce sujet. D’autres méthodes d’investigation ont été employées : parmi celles-ci, deux questionnaires ; l’un auprès de l’ensemble des services en charge de la jeunesse et des sports de la région parisienne (69) afin de faire le point sur les actions menées dans les ZUS ; et le second (508), auprès des jeunes licenciés sportifs de Meaux (77) afin de qualifier leur mobilité et accessibilité sportive dans différents espaces de la ville ainsi que leur propension à créer des amitiés avec d’autres licenciés vivant dans un espace urbain différent ; et enfin, ont été étudiées des bases de données ministérielles sur les licenciés et les équipements sportifs et ainsi que des rapports publics mettant en avant le sport comme un outil de prévention de la délinquance. D’une façon générale, ce travail de thèse permet de déterminer l’usage municipal des différents dispositifs de cofinancement gouvernementaux prenant en charge les équipements sportifs d’une part et l’animation socio-sportive d’autre part. Au croisement des politiques publiques en charge de la jeunesse, des sports, et de la Ville, il s'agit d'étudier les actions menées par les acteurs agissant sur ces domaines tout en observant des prises en charge différenciées des jeunes à travers des modalités distinctes d’accueil et de loisir. Les résultats ont tendance à dépeindre des situations municipales complexes et disparates ; notamment concernant l’usage des dispositifs de cofinancements d’équipements sportifs et d’animations socio-sportives. En revanche, il apparaît nettement un manque d’efficacité de la part de l’action publique en matière de mixité sociale entre les jeunes vivant dans les quartiers et ceux vivant à l’extérieur.
