The present case study shows that it is possible to take advantage of the environmental protection requirements to improve the quality of the project. It deals with the redevelopment of over 1500 m of the west sea water-front of the city of Bari, creating an important public space. This project goes beyond the district dimension, thanks to its environmental value and the possibility of creating a beach and a seafront that can be used during the whole year. In fact, the coastal area, with the beach, will attract many citizens from the neighborhood and will create the social mixitè essential for good quality of regeneration, which is not only made of physical works, but is above all better quality of living the city.
The works are almost finished and, therefore, the concrete facts now allow to draw quite definitive conclusions, the most interesting of which lies in the very positive serendipity that accompanied the choices of environmental design.
By extending the concept of McHarg to “designing with nature”, it is the authors’ conviction that these positive synergies are the norm if one favors the vocation of places through a deep environmental culture
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Reconciling conflicts in a one-male society: the case of geladas
Animals derive benefits from living in social
groups but sociality also has its costs in that animals must
compete with others for resources and mating opportunities.
To cope with the conflict aftermath and social damage
caused by competitive aggression, several group-living
species use a variety of peace-keeping strategies. The
affinitive post-conflict reunion of former opponents, defined
as reconciliation, is the primary peace-keeping mechanism.
In this study, we provide evidence for the occurrence of
reconciliation and test some hypotheses on this post-conflict
mechanism in geladas (Theropithecus gelada), a species
often neglected in the study of post-conflict dynamics.
The conciliatory contacts were uniformly distributed across
the different sex–class combinations. Different from
baboons, geladas did not show any particular kind of
affinitive reconciliation behaviour. Notwithstanding the
presence of a linear hierarchy, the dominance relationships
did not affect the reconciliation dynamics. According to the
valuable relationship hypothesis, coalitionary support
seems to be a good predictor for a high level of conciliatory
contacts. Finally, at an immediate level reconciliation plays
a role in reducing renewed attacks by aggressors, which
sought conciliatory contact more frequently than victims.
In conclusion, even though the study of post-conflict
behaviour in geladas needs to be continued, the patchy
nature of their social network is a good model for testing
some of the theoretical assumptions about primate conflict
resolution
