Identification of a mitochondrial inhibitor of rat liver L-threonine dehydrogenase
In a previous paper, we showed inhibition of rat liver L-threonine dehydrogenase by a preparation obtained by dialysis and concentration from rat liver mitochondria stored at -20 degrees C for 7-10 days (Pagani, R., Leoncini, R., Guerranti, R. and Marinello, E. (1990) It. J. Biochem. 39, 106-114). The chemical composition of the fraction containing the unknown 'inhibitor' has now been studied and identified as D-3-hydroxybutyrate (D3HB)
Spatial Knowledge Spillovers and Regional Productivity Growths in Europe
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects that technological knowledge spillovers at different spatial levels (that is, local, national, and international), have had on labor productivity dynamics in the manufacturing industries in European regions between 1980 and 1992. In particular, adopting a modified version of a ‘catching-up’ equation and using an enlarged version of Eurostat’s REGIO
database, we empirically assess whether these spatial dimensions are possible explanatory factors for
the labor productivity growth of firms located in European regions. We examine eventual trade-offs
between local (regarding the transfer of ‘tacit’ knowledge) and global (regarding the diffusion of fully
‘codified’ knowledge) pressures as possible determinants of the growth in manufacturing productivity at regional level in Europe between 1980 and 1992
Kinetic properties of L-serine dehydratase of the rat liver [Proprieta' cinetiche della L-serina deidratasi di fegato di ratto]
Rat liver L-serine dehydratase (E.C.4.2.1.13) catalyzes the deamination both of L-serine and of L-threonine. These reactions show different rates and, at this moment, the "preferential" substrate of the enzyme is not clear. We have analysed, in various experimental conditions, the behaviour of the deaminase reaction toward the two substrates. From the obtained data, it is evident that at lower pH values L-serine and at higher pH values L-threonine, are the preferred substrates, respectively. A peculiar behaviour is shown by Km values, because they are different by changing the pH in the assay mixtures, and changes are related to the presence of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate in the assay mixtures
Esternalità e sviluppo industriale di lungo periodo in Italia. Un'analisi a livello provinciale
The aim of this paper is to provide, following an approach recently developed by Glaeser et al. (1992), an empirical investigation on the role of dynamic externalities in industrial agglomeration and long-run industrial development. By means of a very large dataset containing information at provincia level for 16 sectors of Italian manufacturing industry covering a thirty year period (1961-1991), geographical specialisation and variety of the local production are investigated, for both Italy and four geographical areas (North-West, North-East, South-East and South-West). It is argued that history matters, that is, initial conditions explain a very large share of industrial agglomeration, but within the geographical areas very different patterns of externalities emerge, as well as different local labour markets for the North and South of Italy
Internationalization, technological change and the theory of the firm
This book focuses on three central areas of economic inquiry: firms' organisation and behaviour, technological change and the process of globalisation
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
