No full textBarbara Lebrun traces the evolution of 'protest' music in France since 1981, exploring the contradictions that emerge when artists who take their musical production and political commitment 'seriously', cross over to the mainstream, becoming profitable and consensual. Contestation is understood as a discourse shaped by the assumptions and practices of artists, producers, the media and audiences, for whom it makes sense to reject politically reactionary ideas and the dominant taste for commercial pop. Placing music in its economic, historical and ideological context, however, reveals the fragility and instability of these oppositions. The book focuses on music production in France, the representations of a 'protest' identity in relation to discourses of national identity and examines the audiences of French 'protest' music and considers festivals as places of 'non-mainstream' identity negotiation. © Barbara Lebrun 2009. In 1960 she arrived in Darwin working in a variety of occupations such as a journalist, historian, author, activist, advocate and editor. Barbara wrote 13 books including "No Man's Land" which explored the contributions of women in the Northern Territory. No full textRecensionC'est peu dire que le livre consacré à Dalida de la chercheuse française en études culturelles, spécialiste de la chanson populaire, Barbara Lebrun, qui enseigne à l'université de Manchester, est un ouvrage complet, un ouvrage total. Ce n'est pas que son volume de près de 350 pages, publié dans la prestigieuse maison Le Mot et le Reste, lui permette d'aborder en détail et avec force anecdotes les méandres de l'existence, écourtée en 1987, à 54 ans, de Iolanda Gigliotti. En fait la largeur de cette hagiographie, son envergure, tient à sa hauteur : surplomb, distance, lucidité, compassion, pertinence, hommage, théorisation, tout y est. Là où l'on s'attendrait à une biographie, on a un essai, très analytique, sur les enjeux d'une carrière de chanteuse populaire, sur la réception d'une oeuvre dont l'artiste est la tête d'affiche sans être seule l'artisane, sur les orientations géopolitiques d'un vedettariat international. Là où on s'attendrait à un essai de Cultural Studies, on a les étapes de la vie d'une femme chantante, expatriée, que son destin a lié à son corps défendant à la mort, jusqu'au 3 mai 1987, où il ne s'est plus défendu
