Incentivized Collaboration in Active Learning
In collaborative active learning, where multiple agents try to learn labels from a common hypothesis, we introduce an innovative framework for incentivized collaboration. Here, rational agents aim to obtain labels for their data sets while keeping label complexity at a minimum. We focus on designing (strict) individually rational (IR) collaboration protocols, ensuring that agents cannot reduce their expected label complexity by acting individually. We first show that given any optimal active learning algorithm, the collaboration protocol that runs the algorithm as is over the entire data is already IR. However, computing the optimal algorithm is NP-hard. We therefore provide collaboration protocols that achieve (strict) IR and are comparable with the best known tractable approximation algorithm in terms of label complexity
News comment sections and online echo chambers: The ideological alignment between partisan news stories and their user comments
© The Author(s) 2022.This study explored the presence of digital echo chambers in the realm of partisan media’s news comment sections in South Korea. We analyzed the political slant of 152 K user comments written by 76 K unique contributors on NAVER, the country’s most popular news aggregator. We found that the political slant of the average user comments to be in alignment with the political leaning of the conservative news outlets; however, this was not true of the progressive media. A considerable number of comment contributors made a crossover from like-minded to cross-cutting partisan media and argued with their political opponents. The majority of these crossover commenters were “headstrong ideologues,” followed by “flip-floppers” and “opponents.” The implications of the present study are discussed in light of the potential for the news comment sections to be the digital cafés of Public Sphere 2.0 rather than echo chambers.11Nssciscopu
Zoology of domain walls in quasi-2D correlated charge density wave of 1T-TaS2
© 2021, The Author(s).Domain walls in correlated charge density wave compounds such as 1T-TaS2 can have distinct localized states which govern physical properties and functionalities of emerging quantum phases. However, detailed atomic and electronic structures of domain walls have largely been elusive. We identify using scanning tunneling microscope and density functional theory calculations the atomic and electronic structures for a plethora of discommensuration domain walls in 1T-TaS2 quenched metastably with nanoscale domain wall networks. The domain walls exhibit various in-gap states within the Mott gap but metallic states appear in only particular types of domain walls. A systematic understanding of the domain-wall electronic property requests not only the electron counting but also including various intertwined interactions such as structural relaxation, electron correlation, and charge transfer. The rising of “Modern Actinobacteria” era
The term “Modern Actinobacteria” (MOD-ACTINO) was coined by a Malaysian Scientist Dr. Lee Learn-Han, who has great expertise and experience in the field of actinobacteria research. MOD-ACTINO is defined as a group of actinobacteria capable of producing compounds that can be explored for modern applications such as development of new drugs and cosmeceutics. MOD-ACTINO members consist of already identified or novel actinobacteria isolated from special environments: mangrove, desert, lake, hot spring, cave, mountain, Arctic and Antarctic regions. These actinobac-teria are valuable sources for various industries which can contribute directly/indirectly towards the improvement in many aspects of our lives.</p
Malaysia’s breakthrough in modern actinobacteria (MOD-ACTINO) drug discovery research
Actinobacteria are well-known producers of metabolites with medicinal value. The application of actinobacterial compounds has been expanded to other fields, including agriculture, aquaculture, and cosmeceutical. With this, the term “Modern Actinobacteria” (MOD-ACTINO) was first coined by a Malaysian researcher, Associate Professor Dr. Lee Learn Han, to define actinobacteria with modern applications. The present review aims to highlight the MOD-ACTINO research achievements in Malaysia. The Malaysian MOD-ACTINO strains are capable of exerting a wide range of bioactivities such as antimicrobial/anti-MRSA, anticancer, antioxidant, antifungal, and antimalarial. Research on MOD-ACTINO is highly encouraged to harness the benefits of actinobacteria and unravel important metabolites for various applications.</p

Electroactive behavior of poly(acrylic acid) grafted poly(vinyl alcohol) samples, their synthesis using a Ce-(IV) glucose redox system and their characterization
Grafted copolymers of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared using a Ce-(IV) glucose redox initiator by free radical polymerization. Three grafted copolymers having 20%, 50% and 80% grafting were selected for this study. Thus-modified polymer was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectra, H-1 NMR, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis and universal testing machine approaches. The membranes were prepared by a solution casting method, where the cross-linking process was performed through the in situ addition of glutaraldehyde and hydrochloric acid as the cross-linking agent and catalyst respectively. The following four membranes were prepared: (i) pure PVA; (ii) 20% grafted PVA; (iii) 50% grafted PVA; (iv) 80% grafted PVA. The membranes obtained were employed in the electroactive behavior study under a DC electric stimulus in different concentrations of electrolyte. The equilibrium bending angles (EBA) of these polymers were studied with respect to time, poly(acrylic acid) content, electric voltage applied across the polymer and ionic strength of the electrolyte used. Experimental results show stable reversibility of the bending behavior of these polymers under an applied DC electric field.
