Proton spectroscopy provides accurate pathology on biopsy and in vivo
In the last 25 years, MR spectroscopy (MRS) has moved from being a basic research tool into routine clinical use. The spectroscopy method reports on those chemicals that are mobile on the MR time scale. Many of these chemicals reflect specific pathological processes but are complicated by the fact that many chemicals change at one time. There are currently two clinical applications for spectroscopy. The first is in the pathology laboratory, where it can be an adjunct to, and in some cases replacement, for difficult pathologies like Barrett's esophagus and follicular adenoma of the thyroid. The spectroscopy method on a breast biopsy can also report on prognostic indicators, including the potential for spread, from information present in the primary tumor alone. The second application for spectroscopy is in vivo to provide a preoperative diagnosis and this is now achievable for several organs including the prostate. The development of spectroscopy for clinical purposes has relied heavily on the serially-sectioned histopathology to confirm the high accuracy of the method. The combination of in vivo MRI, in vivo MRS, and ex vivo MRS on biopsy samples offers a modality of very high accuracy for preoperative diagnosis and provision of prognostic information for human cancers.Mountford, Carolyn ; Lean, Cynthia ; Malycha, Peter ; Russell, Pete
Development of a Materials Management Strategy to Enable Continuous Work Flow on-Site.
When project teams are pressured to limit internal or external Lean coaching due to budgetary concerns, Lean coaches may not have sufficient time to guide project teams in materials management to support milestones. Consequently, while organized project teams will make the time to develop a strategy for managing key materials that impact the critical path, disorganized project teams will more likely manage most materials on an ad-hoc basis. This lack of a materials management strategy then leads to unrealized profits and hidden wastes on projects. As a result, this research seeks to investigate how to develop a basic materials management framework to help project teams begin determining which bulky materials should be: (1) Using a pull system (e.g., through the use of Kanban cards or milk runs) to coordinate deliveries, (2) Kitted off-site vs. on-site, and (3) Organized into prefabricated assemblies. Specifically, this paper will identify various questions, calculations, and artefacts (e.g., equipment for handling and staging materials, signage used to make the materials management strategy transparent to all project participants) that contribute to establishing a comprehensive materials management strategy. In particular, space management emerges as an important tool to organize the flow of materials to match job-site installation rates.</p
Lean manufacturing: a systematic review in the food industry
This paper describes the study trends of lean manufacturing at a national and international level through a systematic review of the scientific literature between 2015 and 2019. A total of 3776 research articles were retrieved from the main bibliographic databases. Metadata and VOSviewer were used to perform a bibliometric cluster analysis by topic and year. The results indicated that the database with the largest number of publications was Science Research. In addition, 36% of all the research articles retrieved were from Asian countries and they addressed efficiency of production processes and productivity. The present article provided an analysis of the implementation of the lean manufacturing philosophy and a summary of the tools used in companies in the food sector to generate inputs that promote productivity. A general framework is proposed that summarizes the trends in lean manufacturing from the literature review performed here
Keeping a feminist curiosity in critical military studies: In conversation with Cynthia Enloe
This conversation between Cynthia Enloe and Daniel Conway began in November 2022 for The World Today magazine and was continued and expanded in July 2024. Cynthia Enloe’s fifteen books include Bananas, Beaches and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics (2nd ed, 2014); Maneuvers: The International Politics of Militarizing Women’s Lives (2000) and Globalization and Militarism: Feminists Make the Link (2nd ed, 2016). Her latest book, Twelve Feminist Lessons of War was published in 2023. Enloe has won numerous awards and is one of the honourees named on the Gender Justice Legacy Wall at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Daniel Conway is the author of Masculinities, Militarisation and the End Conscription Campaign: War Resistance in Apartheid South Africa (2012) and has recently published articles exploring grassroots women’s and LGBTQ+ organizing and Pride events in South Africa, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Shanghai and Mumbai in the journals International Feminist Journal of Politics, Sexualities, International Affairs and Sociology. © 2025 The Author(s). Teaching lean construction: perspectives on theory and practice
This paper builds on the IGLC paper, Different Perspectives on Teaching Lean
Construction, presented last year by Tsao et al. that documented teaching approaches
from three different Lean Construction (LC) university course offerings. It aggregated
the approaches taken by the course offerings, the Lean Construction Institute (LCI),
and the Associated General Contractors of America to develop recommendations for
learning modules, outcomes, and strategies for an introductory LC university course.
This paper provides four additional distinct perspectives to continue the
conversation about teaching LC in a university setting. It illustrates the authors
differences in teaching approaches, experiences, and lessons learned from course
offerings in the United States and Lebanon. The paper offers additional ideas for
providing proof of concept to students and further illustrates how teaching LC
effectively requires a combination of readings, lectures, discussions, simulation
exercises, field trips, and guest speakers to mix theory with action. The paper then
aggregates seven teaching perspectives in a single table to provide an overview of
different approaches for teaching an introductory university-level course on LC
