The Video, the City, and the Spectator: The Architecture and Its Bodies in Front of a Video Camera
This paper is an investigation into the kinds of spectatorial relationships that could be generated when a moving image (video, in this case) presents a city within a political framing. To this end I will analyse three different case studies in which the city—its architecture, and its population—is the polemical common ground of the artwork: Guilty Landscape episode I—Hangzhou by Dries Verhoeven (2016), Sign on a Truck by Jenny Holzer (1984), and Història Urbanística by Video-Nou (1978). In my argumentation, I will adhere generally to Jean Baudrillard’s conceptualisations in terms of media “responsibility”, and those of Jacques Rancière when focused on the term “dissensus”, understood as the essence of politics. Importantly, and worth emphasising, all moving image works are able to mirror the spectator who, through different devices and spatial settings, becomes an active part of the representation itself: and a representation that does not require a form of response is a curtailment that does nothing but amplify the decision-making power of the powerful. Instead, Dries Verhoeven, Jenny Holzer, and Video-Nou confront us with their representations and bid us towards an active personal participation in its construction. Moreover, this could be considered as a reflection upon what might feasibly be achieved today in architecture and urban representation through various new media and their intersections with the moving image and performative arts
'Preface' al volume Hagiography in Anglo-Saxon Egland
The Preface to the volume Hagiography in Anglo-Saxon England: Adopting and Adapting Saints’ Lives into Old English Prose describes the contents of the essays within the aims of the larger project on Anglo-Saxon and early Middle English hagiograph
Hagiography in Anglo-Saxon England: Adopting and Adapting Saints’ Lives into Old English Prose (Textes et Études du Moyen Âge, 73)
This volume gathers fourteen new essays devoted to Old English prose saints’ lives from the late Anglo-Saxon period. Moving from diverse methodological approaches and building on the most recent developments in primary and secondary scholarship, the contributions comprehensively consider the texts and contexts of the vernacular hagiographic output both by Ælfric, the major hagiographer of his day, and by anonymous authors. Attention is devoted also to the post-Conquest legacy of Anglo-Saxon hagiography, as Ælfric’s Lives of Saints continued to be read, copied, edited, and readapted throughout the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In the new stress on the Latin source-texts, among which the long-neglected Vitas Patrum, on the historical background underlying the hagiographical production, this collection contributes to define the sanctorale in use in late Anglo-Saxon England and thereby advances our knowledge of the literary culture and intellectual history of the late Anglo-Saxon period and beyond
L'impatto dell'adozione sui servizi socio-sanitari.
Revisiting Lead(II)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic Acid Coordination Chemistry in Aqueous Solutions: Evidence of an Underestimated Thermodynamic Stability
The complexes formed between Pb2+ and 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) were reinvestigated in aqueous solutions using a combination of pH potentiometry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy. The thermodynamic data were supported by kinetics assays. Differently protonated complexes, i.e., [PbH3L]+, [PbH2L], [PbHL]-, and [PbL]2-, were detected, and the corresponding stability constants (logβ) at T = 298 K and I = 0.1 M NaCl were 33.1 ± 0.2, 32.00 ± 0.06, 29.28 ± 0.06, and 25.3 ± 0.1, respectively. Results differed significantly from those previously reported by Chaves et al. (Talanta 1992, 39, 249) and Pippin et al. (Inorg. Chim. Acta 1995, 239, 43) in both the speciation and the overall complex stability; the latter in particular was found to be remarkably higher. The work disclosed herein provides revised data on the Pb2+-DOTA complexes, which should be used as a new stability benchmark during the development of lead chelators
Rethinking and Recontextualizing Glosses: New Perspectives in the Study of Late Anglo-Saxon Glossography,
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
