A proposed metadiscourse framework for lay ESL writers

    No full text
In the past two decades, writing scholars [1-3] have tried to make sense of the functions and forms of metadiscourse in writing. In doing so, each of these scholars have designed varied metadiscourse frameworks that illustrate the different categories, functions and linguistic realizations so as to capture the use of metadiscourse more succinctly. The intention of this study is to review existing metadiscourse frameworks and to plug the gap that could exist for a more comprehensive framework for effective use by lay ESL writers. The underlying postulation is that various frameworks may have different assumptions, and thus to meet the needs of lay ESL writers, a different approach is likely needed

Chinese literary works translated into Baba Malay: a bibliographical study

    No full text
Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency. The University of Malaya Library held the largest number of unique title (62) out of which 15 were unique titles

Determining attrition of writing skills among Chinese EFL learners

    No full text
So far, little research about writing has been said to have occurred in an EFL environment compared to an ESL environment. This study anchors on an EFL environment found in China. In connection with the EFL environment is the question of writing attrition. The main thrust of the study is to investigate if writing attrition occurred after a long period of nonuse by tertiary students. In addition, attempts are made to link writing attrition to levels of motivation and social activities experienced by the learners. To obtain data, we resorted to standardized writing tests used by the tertiary institution and also developed a questionnaire to investigate the levels of motivation and social activities. To give credibility to the writing instrument used to gauge attrition, test validation is also carried out to lay the fundamentals for the discussion of attrition in writing. We find that overall writing skills attrite coupled with attrition in coherence, clarity and pertinence, but not in grammar. Motivation and social activities may correlate to changes in writing skills

On Eisenstein series in M2k(Γ0(N)) and their applications

    No full text
Let k, N ∈ N with N square-free and k > 1. We prove an orthogonal relation and use this to compute the Fourier coefficients of the Eisenstein part of any f(z) ∈ M2k(Γ0(N)) in terms of sum of divisors function. In particular, if f(z) ∈ E2k(Γ0(N)), then the computation will to yield to an expression for the Fourier coefficients of f(z). Then we apply our main theorem to give formulas for convolution sums of the divisor function to extend the result by Ramanujan, and to eta quotients which yields to formulas for number of representations of integers by certain families of quadratic forms. At last we give essential results to derive similar results for modular forms in a more general setting.Ministry of Education (MOE)Accepted versionI would like to thank Song Heng Chan for his helpful comments throughout the course of this research, and I am grateful to Heng Huat Chan, whose feedback helped to give a more elegant proof of Lemma 3.1. The Critical Factors of Service Encounter satisfaction: Research on Restaurant Industry Author: Shao-Feng Chao Advisor: Dr. Yi-Heng Chou Abstract According to Directorate-general of Budget Accounting and Statistics Executive Yuan\ue2s survey of commerce and service industries in 1996, the statistics showed that the weight of Taiwan\ue2s restaurant industry became more and more influential in commerce. Its contribution to economic productivity cannot be ignored. However, the smaller business size and the easiness for entry enhance the competition and make it hard for operators to survive. To succeed in operation, the managers of restaurants have to emphasize not only the quality of physical goods but also the excellence of service quality, delivering what customers need and want. Many researchers have studied on service quality in recent years. They mainly use the closed questionnaire to measure how factors influence quality. It helps to understand service quality, but there are still some disadvantages. For example, its measure is closed and customers are no more than attitude accountants. Furthermore, the results can only show a part of service process, expressing no service encounters. To see more details about the service encounter between customers and service providers, this research adopts \ue2Critical Incident Technique\ue2(CIT). Customers\ue2 and service employees\ue2 opinions about the critical incidents which impacts on service encounters of fast-food restaurants and deluxe restaurants were collected, coded, and analyzed under the dramaturgical theory and Bitner\ue2s standard (BBM principle). It is to compare customers\ue2 view with service employees\ue2 and to identify the critical factors to service encounter satisfaction of fast-food restaurants and deluxe restaurants in Taiwan. The finding of the research is as followed. I. The critical factors to service encounter satisfaction of fast-food restaurants are: A. service employees\ue2 attitude and behavior, B. service employees\ue2 professional skills, C. the timely provision of service and the response to unreasonably delay, D. the performance of service processes and systems and the response to core service failure. II. The critical factors to service encounter satisfaction of deluxe restaurants are: A. the allocation of service environment, B. service employees\ue2 attitude and behavior, C. the quality of physical products, D. the timely provision of service and the response to unreasonably delay, E. the performance of service processes and systems and the response to core service failure. III. Service employees\ue2 attitude and behavior, the timely provision of service, and the performance of service processes and systems are all the critical factors to service encounter satisfaction no matter in fast-food restaurants of in deluxe restaurants. V. The factors, service employees\ue2 professional skills and the attention to customers, are only critical to service encounter satisfaction of fast-food restaurants. VI. The factors, the allocation of service environment, the quality of physical products, and the response to customers\ue2 preference, are only critical to service encounter satisfaction of deluxe restaurants. Key words: service quality, service encounter, dramaturgical theory, critical incident technique, restaurant industr

Person-centred care for dementia patients (front-end Android app)

    No full text
In Singapore, the rising number of individuals with dementia has created significant challenges for caregivers. To address this issue, the Person-cEntered cARe software system (PEAR) was developed to support healthcare providers in delivering personalised care to dementia patients in a daycare centre. The PEAR system facilitates person-centered care by providing timely and relevant information, ensuring efficient and effective care delivery. The platform is available in both web and mobile versions; the mobile application enables caregivers to access critical information on the go, while the web application offers additional functionalities for managing complex tasks. This project focused on improving the mobile app's functionality, fixing bugs and accelerating development. The author played a key role in upgrading the Expo SDK, developing new features, and conducting manual, user acceptance and automated testing. By improving the user experience and overseeing project management, the author contributed to delivering a more efficient, stable and user-friendly application. The author’s contributions have paved the way for future improvements, including further development of automated testing and the implementation of responsive design. Additionally, the author has provided comprehensive documentation to assist future developers in their ongoing work. This effort ensures that future developers can build upon the existing codebase with greater ease and flexibility, enhancing the project’s sustainability and success.Bachelor's degre
