    The Rev. Al Carmines And The Development Of The Judson Poets\u27 Theater.

    In May 1979 the Rev. A1 Carmines received the Obie for distinguished accomplishment in the New York Theater. Rev. Carmines has been the principal force behind the Judson Poets\u27 Theater, one of the most influential Off Off Broadway theaters. This study explores the development of Mr. Carmines\u27s theater from 1960 to 1979. It also studies the development of Mr. Carmines as composer, lyricist and playwright. An introductory chapter gives background information about the Judson Baptist Church under whose sponsorship this unique theater began. It explores the historical relationship of the Church and theater and the way Judson resolved some of the tensions of this relationship. It also analyzes the situation at the outset of the Off Off Broadway movement and the role of Judson, the Cafe Cino and the La Mama theater in this initial period. Chapter One is a biographical chapter examining the influences which led Mr. Carmines to a dual career in the Church and in the theater. It studies his family history, his education and his early experiences in New York City up to the time he began his work at Judson in 1960. Chapter Two deals with the Judson Dance Theater, an innovative program in modern dance, which was one of the first programs in the Arts sponsored by Judson Church. This theater deeply influenced the Rev. Carmines in his approach to drama and stimulated him as an artist. Eight plays of Gertrude Stein have been produced at Judson, most of them set to music by Mr. Carmines. Several of these have been notably successful, bringing to Mr. Carmines and other Judson performers Obies and other theater awards. Chapter Three analyzes the influence of the work of Gertrude Stein upon Rev. Carmines and the Judson Theater. Chapter Four analyzes in detail selected plays produced at Judson in the 1960s by Mr. Carmines. These plays earned Judson the reputation of a serious avant garde theater with high standards of performance. They also stimulated Carmines\u27s own artistry. Plays of Marie Irene Fornes, Joel Oppenheimer, Rosalyn Drexler, Sam Shepard, Rochelle Owens and Ronald Tavel are studied. Chapter Five reviews the later period of Judson, through 1979, in which Judson chiefly produced works by Carmines himself. A celebratory period and a dark period are noted. Plays are studied chronologically with special attention given to Snow White, one of Carmines1s most popular plays. Chapter Six describes a late development of Carmines\u27s artistry, his work in poetry. Eight poems are presented and analyzed, and comparison is made between the poetry and the author\u27s theater work. A brief concluding chapter sums up and completes the study, noting that Judson continues to be a vibrant force in the New York theate

    Li and Koedel’s (2017) use of “appearance measures” disregards a long history of research on race and ethnicity and sets research with diverse participants back several decades. Race is not biological and is not synonymous with ethnicity. Such externally imposed, problematic labels must not be allowed in education research.</jats:p

    This conceptual article seeks to build on empirical research on microaggressions by introducing a corollary strand of inquiry: micro-kindnesses. &nbsp;A definition and examples of microaggressions are synthesized from a review of psychological and educational research; a particular limitation of this research is then discussed. &nbsp;A definition of micro-kindness is offered and supported by a list of actions to provide multicultural educators examples of micro-kindness in practice, which might inspire inclusion of micro-kindness in course curricula or as a subject of inquiry. &nbsp

    Being a Historian of Central Europe

    Published online: 31 July 2023The main goal of Historical Studies on Central Europe is to provide an interdisciplinary and international platform for disseminating new findings on Central Europe and enhancing the dialog on it. In this spirit, the editors have decided to launch a series asking prominent scholars of the region: their personal motivations for choosing Central Europe as their field; their view on central questions of methodology, trends, and definition, as well as their opinion on the status of the field. Our first discussant is Pieter M. Judson,1 who currently holds a chair in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century History at the European University Institute in Florence. He is the author of numerous prize winning books on fundamental aspects of Habsburg Central Europe, including Exclusive Revolutionaries. Liberal Politics, Social Experience, and National Identity in the Austrian Empire, 1848–1914 (1996), Guardians of the Nation. Activists on the Language Frontiers of Imperial Austria (2006), and The Habsburg Empire. A New History (2016), with the latter translated into twelve languages. For ten years, Professor Judson has been one of the editors of the Austrian History Yearbook, and currently serves as President of the Central European History Society of North America

    Change Agents: Empowering White Female Preservice Teachers Through Dialogue and Counter-Narrative

    This dissertation represents an attempt to uncover, understand, and unmake the structure of racism and its place in Master Narratives of education. This dissertation presents a counter-narrative to Master Narratives of meritocracy, Whiteness, and monologue by addressing two primary research questions: (1) What might dialogic teacher education that prepares a teacher to see the classroom as a site for social change look like? and (2) How might I, as a teacher educator and dialogue facilitator, develop teachers to see the classroom as a site for social change? I define the Social Context (Chapter 2) of this project’s counter-narrative by defining Master Narratives of Meritocracy. I continue with a Theoretical Context (Chapter 3) that describes methods and tools for countering Master Narratives of Whiteness. I situate this project in a larger Academic Context (Chapter 4), describing how other researchers in the field of Multicultural Teacher Education are combating racism in education. I continue with this project’s Methodological Context (Chapter 5), a detailed description of how this counter-narrative arose from a dialogue circle with five preservice teachers, thereby countering Master Narratives of Monologue. In Chapters 6 and 7, I recount a narrative that runs counter to these Master Narratives, a counter-narrative that is relational, critical of Whiteness, and dialogic; this narrative includes stories of the participants and myself and our individual racial identity developments, as well as the story of our dialogue circle as we investigated race and racism, ways racism appears in society, and methods for fighting racism in the P-12 classroom. In Chapter 8, I conclude with implications for theory by problematizing the conceptions of colorblindness and stereotypes. In the area of practice, I propose a possible foundation for talking about race with preservice teachers and provide possible resources for learning to dialogue. In the area of research, I problematize the conception of homogeneity among White female preservice teachers and the possible influence diversity in the classroom has on a teacher’s willingness to address social justice issues
