    Distributed Information Services in Physics

    No full text
The concept of distributed information services maintained by a distributed work force for scientific information is described. Realizations and experiences for Physics (since 1995), Marine Sciences, and dissertation theses in physics are presented. Technically the information is gathered from the local web servers of the worldwide distributed research institutes and departments, by distributed Harvest-gatherers, under the control of national learned societies or regional other institutions. Queries are answered by a network of mirrors of Harvest-brokers. For PhysNet, a Charter sets the rules to assure a noncommercial, free full-text access service, under the control of the set of national national learned societies involved, but unbiased to any single one

The Prayer of Philosopher Stjepan Zimmermann

    No full text
This paper is divided into two main sections. In the introduction, the author draws our attention to the fact that Zimmermann is not unknown in Croatian philosophical and cultural circles. Following the introduction is the first section entitled “Zimmermann’s Prayer”. It contains the text of the prayer itself which was published in The Way of Life in 1945. In the works of Zimmermann certain prayers are also mentioned which were written by other authors, such as Giovanni Papini. The second section of the paper, entitled “An Analysis of Zimmermann’s Prayer”, provides a brief study of certain elements contained therein. The analysis is based on his philosophical texts and mental pursuits of topics such as man in search of the meaning of life, Jesus Christ as revelator of God, Jesus Christ as a historical figure, the soul, knowledge of God through the created world and the truth of Christian revelation. As regards the Zimmermann prayer, its starting point and foundation is the historical figure of Jesus Christ who is also the very center of his prayer. Furthermore, it is important for Zimmermann to prove that man can transcend earthly cognition (materialism) by means of his reason, and that he has the potential for super–experiential cognition (metaphysical cognition). God is revealed to man in Jesus Christ who is the mediator of the revelation. God’s revelation is a certainty, and man has no need to doubt its truth. The conclusion of the paper emphasizes that Zimmermann is not a theological but primarily a philosophical writer; however, Zimmermann’s prayer is an indication that there is a theological side to his texts which needs to be explored in more detail

On large groups of symmetries of finite graphs embedded in spheres

    No full text
Let G be a finite group acting orthogonally on a pair (S^d, \Gamma) where \Gamma is a finite, connected graph of genus g>1 embedded in a sphere S^d of dimension d. The 3-dimensional case d=3 has recently been considered in a paper by C. Wang, S. Wang, Y. Zhang and the present author where for each genus g>1 the maximum order of a G-action on a pair (S^3, \Gamma) is determined and the corresponding graphs \Gamma are classified. In the present paper we consider arbitrary dimensions d and prove that the order of G is bounded above by a polynomial of degree d/2 in g if d is even and of degree (d+1)/2 if d is odd; moreover the degree d/2 is best possible in even dimensions d

Der Schuldfähige Mensch: Ein integratives Therapieziel?

    No full text
This paper reflects the human ability to bear guilt and it proposes this competence as a therapeutical aim of integrative therapy. „Existential guilt“ as a basic topic of therapeutic practice is placed in the center of reflection, the problem of neurotic feelings of guilt is not treated in depth. The author introduces different philosophical and psychotherapeutic concepts of existencial guilt and discusses the ernerging concept of“ guilt“ under the aspect of its „appropriateness“. After scetching some anthropologies of guilt, positions of integrative therapy are questioned concerning their contribution to the topic. Buber’s dialogical principle is consulted, as is Petzold’s basic theory of personality and developmental psychology, his model of intersubjectivity and correspondence, his work on concience and his idea of a disillusionized anthropology. The paper advances towards an extended concept of the capability to bear guilt as a mature mode of being human. The references to praxeology have a vision of a human being able forced to take responsibility for his life and to accept his existencial guilt as personal guilt. He can do this even more, since he knows himself with his guilt to be accepted and loved. This text is posted here anew because it is of particular relevance in the time of the pandemic with its diverse ethical dilemmas.https://www.fpi-publikation.de/polyloge/06-2021-zimmermann-gustav-2003-der-schuldfaehige-mensch-ein-integratives-therapieziel/peerReviewedpublishedVersio

From basic survival analytic theory to a non-standard application

    No full text
Georg Zimmermann provides a mathematically rigorous treatment of basic survival analytic methods. His emphasis is also placed on various questions and problems, especially with regard to life expectancy calculations arising from a particular real-life dataset on patients with epilepsy. The author shows both the step-by-step analyses of that dataset and the theory the analyses are based on. He demonstrates that one may face serious and sometimes unexpected problems, even when conducting very basic analyses. Moreover, the reader learns that a practically relevant research question may look rather simple at first sight. Nevertheless, compared to standard textbooks, a more detailed account of the theory underlying life expectancy calculations is needed in order to provide a mathematically rigorous framework. Contents Regression Models for Survival Data Model Checking Procedures Life Expectancy Target Groups Researchers, lecturers, and students in the fields of mathematics and statistics Academics and experts working in the life sciences, especially in the medical field The Author Georg Zimmermann is a PhD student at the University of Salzburg and research associate at Christian-Doppler-Klinik, Salzburg
