Letter from Carl Hayden to Willis E. Borg, Flagstaff Board of Trade
Letter from Carl Hayden to the Flagstaff Board of Trade concerning a resolution passed to change the Grand Canyon from a monument to a National Park. Hayden expresses interest in the idea while taking care to protect the water power and mineral resources that are derived from the canyon
Slumber under divine protection: from vague pagan hopes to Christian belief
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from de Gruyter via the link in this record.This paper focusses on the most popular Christian and non-Christian images from the funerary realm in order to explore the relationship between Christian and non-Christian Roman art, and to discuss methodological issues related to modern attempts at establishing their meaninng. At a methodological level, it argues for an approach that cautions against giving primacy to texts, and that takes the images and their language seriously as a source for a better understanding of ancient thought in a range of contexts and across a range of lay people. At a thematic level, it argues that Christians and non-Christians shared key ideas about what may come after death. They hoped for peaceful rest, for delivery from the toil and pain of earthly existence, and for divine presence and protection. This state was often illustrated by sleeping figures, who constituted the single most popular narrative subject in both Christian and non-Christian funerary art
The Role of Independent Fiscal Policy Institutions
The paper analyses how independent fiscal watchdogs (fiscal policy councils) can strengthen the incentives for fiscal discipline. Several countries have recently established such institutions. By increasing fiscal transparency they can raise the awareness of the long-run costs of current deficits and increase the reputational costs for governments of violating their fiscal rules. Councils that make also normative judgements, where fiscal policy is evaluated against the government's own pre-set objectives, are likely to be more influential than councils that do only positive analysis. To fulfil their role adequately, fiscal watchdogs should be granted independence in much the same way as central banks. There are arguments both in favour and against extending the remit of a fiscal policy council to include also tax, employment and structural policies. Whether or not this should be done depends on the existence of other institutions making macroeconomic forecasts and analysing fiscal policy, the existence of institutions providing independent analysis in other economic policy areas, and the severity of fiscal problems.Fiscal Policy Council; Fiscal policy; Government policy;

Estimating the Leaf Area Index of agricultural crops using multi-temporal dual-polarimetric TerraSAR-X data: A case study on North East Germany
Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most important ndicators of agricultural variables because of its relation to biophysical and biochemical properties of agricultural crops. Variations in LAI can be related to changes in leaf scattering properties, and these variations in leaf scattering
properties can lead to changes in canopy backscattering
behaviour. The objective of this study was to explore the potential of estimating LAI using multi-temporal dual polarimetric TerraSAR-X data in three different agricultural field crops, including winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), and canola (Brassica napus L.). The relationship between LAI and the scattering
coefficient (σ0) in TerraSAR-X was explored using three different approaches, including univariate regression, i.e., simple linear and nonlinear regression, multivariate regression, i.e., stepwise regression, and a semi-empirical water cloudmodel(WCM). The multivariate stepwise regression showed is capability to retrieve the LAI without any external input data, such as soil moisture, based solely on the polarization channels, i.e., HH or VV, and polarization variables, e.g. HH/VV or HH+VV. However,
unlike the WCM, the stepwise method is not applicable with just one polarization channel. The results indicate that the leaf area index (LAI) was significantly and consistently correlated with σ0 throughout the growth stages using the stepwise regression and WCM approaches, whereas simple
linear and nonlinear regression yielded relatively poor results except with barley
Fluoride and dental caries
Fluorine was probably discovered by the chemist Scheele in 1771, and eventually isolated in 1886 by Moissan. Its presence in bones and teeth was initially disputed but eventually confirmed in the middle of the eighteenth century. In this article the author discusses the few epidemiological studies which confirm the relationship between fluoride concentration in drinking water, mottled enamel and the incidence of dental caries and also describes the Maltese scene in regards the caries level in tap water.peer-reviewe
Referencer:Bandura, A.
