What do we mean by the term "talent" in talent management?

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to consider the ways the notion of “talent” has developed over many years, both historically and linguistically, in a number of European and non-European languages and in use in organisations, and its use in talent management. Design/methodology/approach – The information was gained from a literature review of key reports on talent management and a major review of ten organisations across sectors and by interviewing over 100 individuals involved in talent management programmes in the UK and abroad. Holden and Tansley also conducted a philological analysis of the word “talent” from both an historical and a linguistic-comparative perspective analysing publications by consultancies and articles in the management press considering both literal (denotative) definitions and metaphoric (connotative) associations of the term talent in English, noting contrasting usages of the word in other languages

What do we actually mean by talent in business? Does it really matter?

The conceptualization of talent has become increasingly relevant for scholars and practitioners as they seek to advance the study of talent management (TM). Indeed, confusion about the meaning of talent within the business field hinders consensus on the concept and practice of TM. In this theoretical study we review the talent concept in business to summarize what we have learned and to discuss the pros and cons of different approaches. We conclude by formulating an overall definition of this term, since an acknowledged interpretation of talent management—not to mention the successful management of talent— will depend on having a clear understanding of what is meant by talent in an organizational context. Moreover, with our definition of talent, we delimit the talent concept while avoiding problems uncovered in previous definitions (e.g. generality and tautology) and highlighting important variables that affect it and can make it more manageable

Finland is considered as an attractive place to study. While the great number of students move to Finland each year, the issue of their career development and integration into Finnish society remains relevant and significant. Talent Boost is a programme, which supports international specialists on the national level, while Jamk Talent Boost is responsible for improving job opportunities of international students in Central Finland. Jamk Talent Boost performed as a commissioner for the research. The main objective of the study was to identify the awareness status of Jamk students regarding Jamk Talent Boost and offer development ideas on how the awareness level might be increased. Quantitative methodology was used to answer the main research question. The survey of 15 questions was sent to students through Jamk Talent Boost communication channels. Results demonstrated that the awareness of Jamk Talent Boost was different depending on respondents’ education and employment status. While there was no direct answer to the awareness status, it still could be identified through comparisons between different groups. Finally, while Jamk Talent Boost generally demonstrated a great progress in the Talent Boost programme goals, the author offered a number of development proposals based on the analysis

    Migration and Imitation

    No full text
This paper develops a North–South trade model with heterogeneous labour and horizontally differentiated products, and compares the implications of two policies: Southern intellectual property rights (IPR) and Northern immigration policy, with the latter aiming to attract Southern talent as a means of pre-empting imitation. Individuals self-select into becoming entrepreneurs and innovate (imitate) in the North (South). The likelihood of imitation depends on product quality, imitator's talent and IPR strength. Several interrelated channels of competition are identified. Allowing high-talent migration when IPR protection in the South is weak shifts imitation to low-quality products and innovation to high-quality products. The outcome is in stark contrast to the policy of strengthening Southern IPR, which limits low-talent imitation in the South and encourages low-quality innovation in the North. Migration also increases the income of low-talent entrepreneurs, as well as the average quality of products imitated by high-talent entrepreneurs in the South. Global income rises with migration, but is not guaranteed to rise with stronger Southern IPR

Developing Talent Not Privilege: An Exploration of the Vulnerable-Resilient Vessel within the Everyday ‘Student Journey’ at an English Arts University

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Journal of Talent Development and Creativity, I return to the vision of the publication, by understanding what it means to develop talent and creativity in the 21st century. This paper celebrates the development of talent in the context of an arts education for neurodiverse students. Often talent is overlooked in pedagogies of neoliberalism, as the ethos for universities favour the market forces of competition and survival. In particular, post-1992 universities, face fierce competition for students due to market saturation. Students’ needs have been forgotten in unethical recruitment practices that are disguised as increased access. Unfortunately, it is to the detriment of welfarism and what bell hooks terms ‘the care of the soul’. This paper partly explores the current milieu, at university to contextualise the tenacity, resilience and vulnerability of those working and learning. Here talent and development are encouraged in young people, who have hitherto been marginalised and disadvantaged. It celebrates the successes, facilitated in part by the mediation of a small team of study skills support workers, including the author. Accordingly, a feminist approach engages auto-ethnography, and psychosocial spaces of the imaginary. Borrowing from the oeuvre of Feminism, Adult Education and Creative Possibility: Imaginative Responses, woven within the threads of this theory are small vignettes, art and poetry by one study skills support worker and the author. Speaking from the lived experience of being a child from a working-class background who is neurodiverse, I understand what it means to be marginalised in the English system of education. From the experiences of the support worker and me, this paper explores the ‘student journey’ within the context of inclusion in higher education, followed by an exploration of creative practices and reflections
