Hydrocaffeic and p-coumaric acids, natural phenolic compounds, inhibit UV-B damage to WKD human conjunctival cells in vitro and rabbit eye in vivo
This paper studied the effect on UV-B ocular damage of 10microM hydrocaffeic acid (HCAF) alone and as a mixture (MIX) (5 microM HCAF+5 microM p-coumaric acid). Since ocular UV-B damage is mediated by reactive oxygen species, the aim was to test if HCAF and MIX could reduce oxidation damage in human conjunctival cells (WKD) in vitro and in cornea and sclera of rabbits in vivo. After UVB irradiation (44 J/m(2)) of WKD cells, 8-oxodG levels in DNA were markedly increased and this effect was attenuated by HCAF and MIX. Rabbit eyes were treated by application of HCAF and MIX drops before UV-B exposure (79 J/m(2)). Corneal and scleral DNA oxidation damage, xanthine-oxidase (XO) activity and malondialdehyde levels (MDA) in corneal tissue and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) in the aqueous humour were reduced by HCAF alone and in combination with p-coumaric acid, showing their potential as a topical treatment against UV-B damage

Formação de redes de Stackelberg não cooperativas
Non-cooperative network formation games in industrial organizations analyze how firms create links. We assume that links portray cost-reducing information and that access to this information is not reciprocal. We study the consequences in terms of profits if one firm can move first in establishing a link. A classic model of exogenous Stackelberg leadership is developed and first-mover advantage is observed.Los juegos de formación de red en organización industrial analizan cómo se crean enlaces entre empresas. El modelo supone que los enlaces conllevan información que reduce costos de producción y el acceso a dicha información no es recíproco. Se estudia las consecuencias en los beneficios si una firma puede mover primero al establecer los enlaces. Un modelo clásico de liderazgo exógeno de Stackelberg es desarrollado y las ventajas de primer movedor son observadas.Les jeux de création de réseaux en organisation industrielle analysent comment se créent des liens entre entreprises. Le modèle implique que les liens sont porteurs d'une information qui réduit les coûts de production et l'accès à cette information n'est pas réciproque. On étudie les conséquences dans les avantages si un groupe peut prendre l'initiative lors de l'établissement du lien. Selective and general exhaustive cross-coupling of di-chloroarenes with a deficit of nucleophiles mediated by a Pd–NHC complex
We report the first example of a general, exhaustive Pd-mediated cross-coupling of polychloroarenes in the presence of a deficit of nucleophiles, mediated by the highly active PEPPSI-IPent catalyst. Our results indicate that this catalyst system may be applicable to the pseudo-living polymerisation of chloroarene monomer

Prevalence of qnr genes among extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing enterobacterial isolates in Barcelona, Spain
Objectives: To evaluate the presence of qnr genes among enterobacterial isolates carrying extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) in Barcelona, Spain. Methods: Screening for the qnrA, qnrB and qnrS geneswas carried out by PCR amplification with specific primers in 305 non-duplicate, clinically relevant ESBL-producing enterobacterial isolates obtained from February 2003 to August 2004. ESBLs from all qnr -positive isolates were characterized by isoelectric focusing, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing. Plasmid analysis was performed by S1 digestion and hybridization with specific probes for the qnr and bla genes. Plasmids containing qnr genes were transferred by conjugation or transformation. The genetic environment of qnrA1 in selected isolates was characterized by cloning experiments. Results: Fifteen isolates, each from a different individual, carried qnr. Among them, 14 had qnrA1 (6 Klebsiella pneumoniae, 6 Enterobacter cloacae and 2 Escherichia coli isolates) and 1 had qnrS1 (K. pneumoniae). None of the isolates carried qnrB. Among the qnrA1 -carrying isolates, 10 possessed both blaCTX-M-9 and blaSHV-12, 2 had both blaCTX-M-9 and blaSHV-92 and 2 had blaCTX-M-9 alone. The isolate with qnrS1 possessed blaSHV-12. The qnrA1 and ESBL genes were located together on plasmids ranging in size from 40 to 320 kb. qnrS1 and blaSHV-12 were not located on the same plasmid. Transfer of quinolone resistance was successfully achieved from all but three isolates. The cloned region surrounding qnrA in two K. pneumoniae isolates revealed a novel genetic organization. Conclusions: The prevalence of qnr among enterobacterial clinical isolates carrying ESBLs between 2003 and 2004 in Barcelona was 4.9%. qnrA1 was the most prevalent, whereas only one qnrS and no qnrB were detected. © The Author 2008.
