Maria José ao encontro de Tchekov

“A Carta da Corcunda para o Serralheiro” (“Letter from the Hunchback Girl to the Metalworker”), signed by Maria José, was first performed in a theatre show in 1988 (by actress-director Maria do Céu Guerra), two years before the typescript was published in book form for the first time by Teresa Rita Lopes. The evidence upon which this article is built is that it was the theatre that revealed the dramatic destination of this singular epistle of the only female heteronym that Fernando Pessoa invented, which was also the last heteronym to be created by the author. The dramatic construction of Maria José can be approximated to the character-building strategies in Anton Chekhov’s realist dramaturgy, in a way that differs from Pessoa’s other dramaturgical experiences. The analysis of Chekhov’s ascendancy over Stanislavski’s research, as well as the importance of Schopenhauer’s conception of the tragicomic, which is simultaneously projected onto Chekhov’s theatre and Maria José’s profile, are favourable lines of reading for this rapprochement between Pessoa and the Russian fiction writer and playwright.

Mutations inSETBP1are recurrent in myelodysplastic syndromes and often coexist with cytogenetic markers associated with disease progression

Whole exome sequencing was performed in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome before and after progression to acute myeloid leukaemia. Mutations in several genes, including SETBP1, were identified following leukaemic transformation. Screening of 328 patients with myeloid disorders revealed SETBP1 mutations in 14 patients (4·3%), 7 of whom had -7/del(7q) and 3 had i(17)(q10), cytogenetic markers associated with shortened overall survival and increased risk of leukaemic evolution. SETBP1 mutations were frequently acquired at the time of leukaemic evolution, coinciding with increase of leukaemic blasts. These data suggest that SETBP1 mutations may play a role in MDS and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia disease progression

Singularidades de José María Arguedas como escritor

    No full text
Jose Maria Arguedas is one of the most singular writers of Peruvian narrative and, by extension, of Latin-America. The originality of his writings is born of a series of aspects that we will try to analyze in these pages and that would be the blending of life and literature, the incorporation of anthropology and ethnology in his fiction and the search for a singular language. All these combinations contribute to the creation of novels and statements in which the author starts from the point of a marked duality between Quechua and Spanish in his first writings later to plead for cultural miscegenation. In his last novels, on the other hand, he will reflect on the rapid process of acculturation that according to the author his country was suffering from.

The political instrumentalization of professional football in Francoist Spain 1939-1975

    No full text
PhDThe objective of this thesis is to be the first systematic study of the political instrumentalization of football in Francoist Spain from 1939 to 1975. Seven separate and contrasting aspects of this political instrumentalization may be isolated, and, accordingly, this thesis will consist of a chapter examining each one of these seven aspects in turn. After a first introductory chapter, Chapter Two will examine the application of Fascist concepts to Spanish football. In the third chapter, the questions of whether and to what extent football was used by the Franco regime as a political soporific will be discussed. The theme of Chapter Four is the lack of democracy within the structures of the game, a situation that is alleged to have been deliberately imposed by the regime in order to not create an uncomfortable comparison for itself with the lack of national and local political democracy. The poor working conditions of the footballers, which mirrored those of the great majority of Spanish workers during the Franco period, are the subject of Chapter Five. In the sixth Chapter, the political significance of the presence in Francoist Spain of a group of refugee players and coaches from Europe will be examined. The diplomatic and ambassadorial significance of football, in particular of the spectacular international triumphs of the Real Madrid club, will be discussed in Chapter Seven. The political significance of football as a focus for Basque and Catalan nationalist sentiment, in opposition to the centralist Madrid regime, is the subject of Chapter Eight

Possible dialogues between Maria Gabriela Llansol and Clarice Lispector: ways to rethink the child-being

    No full text
The objective of this work is to study a new and potentialized child, growing in understanding, both in the work of the writer Maria Gabriela Llansol and in Clarice Lispector. The child is treated as a metaphor of a ser-vivo, who ventures into new possibilities of understanding, turning your gaze while reading. We try to understand the text as a place that allows the development of the creative act by readers, named in this work as entre-lugar. Among the most important aspects of this place, we see the persistence in the continuity of being, learning about itself, from the other readers and from the changes in their outlook on the world. Some books are used, such as Um beijo dado mais tarde and Amar um cão by Llansol, and Quase de verdade, Mistério do coelho pensante, A mulher que matou os peixes and A vida íntima de Laura by Lispector, to show the relationship between being and reading through its change of look. Several concepts are discussed, such as child, learning, reading, textuality, freedom, representation, author, thought, perception and time. Supporting the theory of this research through the work of Clarice and Maria Gabriela and by specialized critique, such as Maria dos Prazeres Santos Mendes, Nádia Gotlib, Olga de Sá, Maria de Lourdes Soares, Jorge Fernandes da Silveira, João Barrento, Eduardo Prado Coelho, Eduardo Lourenço, Lúcia Castelo Branco, João Barrento and Maria Etelvina Santos

    No full text
In 2012 In 2012, at the age of 86 and after a rich and varied literary career, José Manuel Caballero Bonald published Entreguerras o De la Naturaleza de las cosas, an extensive, intense, lyric, epic, narrative, and dramatic poem, composed of a preface and fourteen chapters in free verses, with very sparse punctuation marks, of great stylistic originality and structural complexity. Due to its decided introspective and autobiographical nature, the work can be considered as “memories” in verse, as are, in prose, the pages of La novela de la memoria (2010, revised edition), with which Entreguerras is closely related, as this essay attempts to demonstrate. It is not, in any case, a “poeticization” of La novela de la memoria, but a radically new, vital, literary and moral autobiography, in which “external” biography is subordinated to reflection and judgment, with a marked hermeneutical, ethical, and testimonial will. In this sense, Entreguerras offers us a unique reconstruction of the human and literary adventures of its author, of his yearnings and obsessions, of his dreams and terrors, and all this, with his customary fictional grafts and yet without sacrificing the polyhedral richness of the poems to the autobiographical aspect. We are also facing an inquisitive meditation on memory and time, on truth and knowledge, on the limits, ambiguities, and mysteries of poetic writing, and on history and its errors, especially that of postwar Spain and the Transition. The essay analyzes all of these aspects in detail

The Witness of Landscape : Annie Dillard and Jose Maria Arguedas in Accord with Nature

    No full text
There is a striking similarity in the perception of nature in two very different authors: Annie Dillard, a U.S. nature writer, and Jose Maria Arguedas, a Peruvian neoindigenist author. Both seem extraordinarily sensitive to the possibility of nature as an agent and as inspirited. A survey of the presence of nature in literature in the Americas and of its place in both Native and European American religion forms the introduction. Dillard\u27s life and work are next reviewed and examined, followed by an exploration of critical approaches that may uncover the source of the similarity to Arguedas: her difference from Emerson and Thoreau, a feminist approach to epistemology, mysticism, and ecocriticism. A review of Arguedas\u27 life and work follows, including a word about the Quechua belief system. Next his place in the intellectual movement indigenismo, or Indigenism, is discussed, along with his status as a transcultured person. The conclusion finds that both authors work from positions outside rational thought or objective reality, that is, outside the realm of Euroscience
