No full textThis paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.

Analyzing Fatal Bird-Window Collisions Occurring on USU\u27s C&SS Building, Brigham City, Utah
No full textFatal bird window collisions are often overlooked as minimally damaging to bird populations or viewed as inevitable collateral damage of human habitat expansion. In reality, these unnecessary collisions are truly monumental in number, and prove to be a serious threat to bird populations, especially endangered bird species. In the United States alone it is estimated that between 365 - 988 million birds fatally collide with man-made windows annually. We are focusing our study on fatal bird-window collisions occurring on the Classroom and Student Services Building (C&SS building) at the USU campus in Brigham City, UT 84302. We have selected this building as a potential location for a high frequency of bird-window collision for its inclusion of multiple large windows. Several studies have indicated that window area was positively correlated with the amount of window strikes. The objective of the study is to: Investigate the number of fatal bird window collisions that occur on the C&SS building, then determine if it is larger than the expected number of fatal window collisions per month for a low-rise non-residential building. The expected number is between 0 – 6 collisions per month. The objective will be accomplished through a two-step method. First, we will be analyzing data obtained through the conduction of daily surveys of the C&SS building during the months of August through November of 2020. The surveys will be conducted by ourselves and USU faculty. We will be looking for bird-window collision evidence. Three-dimensional measurements of heavy and light particle dispersion in shear turbulence
No full textWe present new experimental data concerning the statistics of heavy and light particles dispersed at low concentrations in a homogeneous turbulent shear flow. Information on both the spatial distribution and on the relative velocity of the dispersed phases is obtained by accurate three-dimensional optical measurements, and will allow to comparatively discuss the issues of turbulent clustering and small scale anisotropy by analyzing the scale- and angular dependence of suitable particle observables computed in the two cases
Urinary porphyrin excretion in hepatitis C infection
No full textA high prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in porphyria cutanea tarda in some populations suggests a close link between viral hepatitis and alteration of porphyrin metabolism. Moreover, there is evidence of a role of porphyrinopathies in hepatocarcinogenesis. The aim of our study was to obtain data on the prevalence and patterns of heme metabolism alterations in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection. Urinary porphyrin excretion was prospectively studied in 100 consecutive outpatients with chronic hepatitis C infection without signs of photosensitivity, using an ion-pair high performance liquid chromatography method. Increased total porphyrin excretion was found in 41 patients, with predominant excretion of coproporphyrins (whole study group: mean 146 mu g/g creatinine, interquartile range 76-186; normal <150), in 10 patients excretion exceeded 300 mu g/g creatinine. In the majority of all patients studied (75/100) an increased ratio of the relatively hydrophobic coproporphyrin isomer I to isomer III was found. In just one case, urinary porphyrin pattern characteristic for chronic hepatic porphyria was present (uroporphyrin > coproporphyrin, heptacarboxyporphyrin III increased) but the total porphyrin excretion was only slightly elevated in this case. In the whole group, total urinary porphyrin excretion correlated well with serum bilirubin and was inversely correlated with albumin and thrombin time. In conclusion, secondary coproporphyrinuria occurs frequently in heptatitis C infection, whereas in Germany, preclinical porphyria cutanea tarda seems to be rare in these patients

No full textOn December 24, 1973, the Ohio Historical Society informed Jacob C. Kellem that their Board of Trustees had reviewed Pauline A. Young's request regarding the Paul L. Dunbar and Alice Dunbar Nelson papers. The Board decided to refer the matter to legal counsel and the Director for further action. Enclosed was the legal counsel's opinion, which led to the Society's inability to fulfill Ms. Young's request

Jacob Owen Reynolds (February 13, 1893 - December 12, 1964) was born in Slaughters, Kentucky to Warren Lee Reynolds and Ida Katherine Goodson. Reynolds practiced law in Lexington after receiving his LL.B.. His brother, Goodson Reynolds (UK Law \u2720), joined his practice in the 1920s. Reynolds was, at one time, the president of the Lexington chapter of the Red Cross. He was also the author of a pamphlet titled History of Epworth Methodist Church, Lexington, Kentucky (published in 1960).
