Why social sustainability counts: The impact of corporate social sustainability culture on financial success
No full textAwareness is growing in European companies of the importance of managing all aspects of sustainability. However, the elusive social aspect of sustainability and its influence on successful business has been\ua0under-investigated in corporate culture literature so far. The aim of this paper is to examine whether a\ua0correlation can be found between corporate social sustainability culture (expressed as explicit ‘‘items’’ of\ua0corporate values and practices emphasizing employee and societal well-being) and the financial success\ua0of a company. This is examined through a multiple regression analysis of two contrasting European polls,\ua0examining items indicating corporate social sustainability culture, and financial outcomes. The empirical\ua0results show that four specific success-related social sustainability dimensions of corporate culture are\ua0predictors of a company being classified as financially successful. These are: Sustainability strategy and\ua0leadership; Mission, communication and learning; Social care and work life; and Loyalty and identification.\ua0The paper contributes to the understanding of how to manage corporate social sustainability culture\ua0whilst supporting companies’ financial performance, and provides evidence-grounded recommendations\ua0to business managers and stakeholders aiming to manage social sustainability proactively by undertaking\ua0cultural change and development initiatives
Asustekorumallisto Minna Parikan yritykselle
No full textTämä opinnäytetyö on työelämälähtöinen yhteistyö kahden eri alan muotoilijan välillä. Se käsittelee asustekorumalliston suunnitteluprosessia muotoilijan näkökulmasta kenkäsuunnittelija Minna Parikan yritykselle. Asustekorumalliston tarkoitus oli ilmentää Parikan malliston estetiikan lisäksi muotoilijan omaa kädenjälkeä.
Suunnittelutyön pohjan rakentaminen aloitettiin tutustumalla asustekorujen historiaan ja kevät/ kesä 2012 asusteiden trendeihin WGSN-nettisivujen mukaan. Työssä tulkittiin myös Minna Parikan kädenjälkeä ja yhtä hänen mallistoa. Asustekorumalliston suunnan hahmottamisen avuksi rakennettiin benchmarking-kollaasi.
4D-muotoilualusta toimi tärkeänä suunnittelun työkaluna kahdessa vaiheessa työtä. Sen avulla tutkittiin syvemmin Minna Parikan Spring/ Summer 2012 mallistoa ja lopuksi sitä käytettiin muokkaamaan suunnitellun asustekorumalliston koruideoita.
Luonnosteluprosessia arvioi ja kommentoi kenkämuotoilija Minna Parikka. Lopputuloksena työstä syntyi asustekorumallisto kolmesta eri teemasta. Mallisto oli inspiroitunut Parikan tuotteissa esiintyvästä kuvakielestä, jota muotoilija käsittely oman näkemyksensä kautta.This thesis is a working life-based collaboration between two designers from different lines. It deals with the designing process of an accessory jewellery collection for shoe designer Minna Parikka’s company from the author’s point of view. The aim of the accessory jewellery collection was to present the aesthetics of Parikka’s collection and in addition the designer’s own style.
The base for designing was started by getting familiar with the history of costume jewellery and spring/ summer 2012 accessory trends according to WGSN-websites. The thesis also explored Minna Parikka’s design and one of her collections. A benchmarking- collage was done to picture the direction of the accessory jewellery collection.
The 4D- product platform was an important designing tool which was used twice in this project. With the help of the 4D-product platform, Minna Parikka’s Spring/ Summer 2012 collection was explored deeper. It was also used in the designing process to modify the ideas for the jewellery.
The designing process was assessed and commented by Minna Parikka. The three-pieced accessory jewellery collection was made as the final result. The collection was inspired by Parikka’s design language which the author processed with her own vision

An Analysis of Motorcycle Traffic andCrashes in Nigeria – A case study of Minna, Nigeria.
No full textThe study examined the traffic volume by mode and established the prominence of the motorcycle as the principal mode of commuting in the city of Minna. Data was sourced through traffic census carried out by the author in November 2011, records from the general Hospital and the Federal Road Safety Corps Office in Minna. The analysis revealed that motorcycle traffic is particularly heavy in neighbourhoods off the main arterial road which concentrates 50% of all vehicular traffic, 83% of taxicabs and 35% of car movements in the entire city. The heavy volume of motorcycle traffic is reflected in the number of motorcycle crashes and casualties. Between 2000 and 2011, a total of 1,295 motorcycle crashes were recorded with August to December of every year as the worst months thus lending credence to the popular belief that the “ember” months are months of misfortune in Nigeria. During the same period, 13,918 motorcycle crash induced injuries and 227 deaths were recorded. The mean number of injured victims rose astronomically from 519 in the four-year period of 2000 – 2003 to 2,356 between 2008 – 2011. The study also revealed that behavioral factors such as dangerous driving, speed and route violation and driving under the influence of alcohol accounted for 75% of all the crashes.Keywords: Motorcycle, traffic, crashes, casualties, accident factor

Discourses and their boundaries define what is seen as possible, as well as the range of issues and their solutions. By exploring the connections between practices and discourses, Minna Kanerva develops a conceptual approach enabling purposive change in unsustainable social practices. Uni-valverytmi on yksi biologisista rytmeistä, joka rakentuu ihmiselle sisäsyntyisesti. Keskeisin asia opinnäytetyössä oli pienten lasten uni-valverytmiin vaikuttavien tekijöiden kuvaaminen. Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kuvata vanhempien kokemuksia siitä, millaista ohjausta he ovat saaneet 0-2 vuotiaan lapsen univalverytmin kehittymisestä. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli saada tietoa vanhempien kokemasta ohjauksesta, ja sen avulla kehittää ohjauksen sisältöä, jota terveydenhoitajat antavat työssään. Opinnäytetyön teoriaosuudessa käsitellään vanhemmuuden tukemista, uni-valverytmin kehittymistä, tukikeinoja ja perheen voimavaralähtöistä ohjaamista.
Tutkimus oli kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen. Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin sähköisesti. Sähköinen saatekirje laitettiin internetin Vauva-, Meidän Perhe-, Terve.fi-, ja Vau.fi keskustelufoorumeille. Tutkimusaineisto saatiin sähköpostilla. Kertomuksia tutkimukseen tuli yhteensä kahdeksan kappaletta. Tutkimustulosten analysoinnissa käytettiin induktiivista sisällönanalyysiä.
Tutkimuksesta saatujen tulosten mukaan, vanhemmat olivat olleet pääsääntöisesti tyytyväisiä saamaansa ohjaukseen lasten uni-valverytmin kehittymisessä. Muutama vastaajista oli kokenut ohjauksen liian suppeaksi. Kehitettävänä vanhemmat toivoivat vertaistuen lisäämistä, ja konkreettisia esimerkkejä hoitokeinoihin.Degree programme: Degree programme in nursing, Public health nurse

Sleep-awake rhythm is one of the biological rhythms, which builds up on person internally. The most essential subject on this thesis was to describe the factors that influence small childrens sleep-awake rhythm. Also the main idea was to bring forth parents' experiences on what kind of quidance they have received in development of 0-2 years old childrens sleep-awake rhythm. The goal of the research was to accumulate information about parents' experiences of quidance on this matter and through that develop the content of the quidance which public health nurses provide to the parents.
The theory section of this thesis discusses on supporting of parenthood, the development of sleep-awake rhythm, supporting means and resource-based quidance of the family.
This research was qualitative. The research material was gathered electronically. Electric cover letter was post on Vauva-, Meidän perhe-, Terve.fi-, and Vau.fi discussion forums. The responses were received via e-mail. There were eight responses altogether. The choice of analysing method was inductive reasoning.
The results of the research imply that parents' were mainly satisfied with the quidance in the development the small childrens sleep-awake rhythm. Few of the answerers had experienced that the quidance were too concise. The parents' wished improvement on increasing the peer support and giving tangible examples of treatment methods
Performing the author/mother/merchant/wife: moving subject positions in Minna Canth's autobiography
No full textReading autobiography as a performative act enables for the analysis of processes involved in constructing the self. It provides a space for analysing the ways in which gender, nationality, and other social locations of the subject are negotiated. In this article, I read the famous Finnish nineteenth-century playwright and author Minna Canth’s concise autobiography, focusing on various locations of the autobiographical subject in this rather laconic matter-of-fact text. My reading follows current trends in feminist autobiographical theorising as well as feminist politics of reading. I strive to deconstruct the interpretation of autobiographies as dichotomously fixed texts. I suggest a more flexible reading that would take the ambiguities of the genre seriously, such as describing both the public and the private life of the author, constructing the subject of the narrative, both relational and autonomous, in addition to varying stylistically between mere factuality and decorative description. Such a reading takes into account the shifts of the subject positions as well as the styles of narration moving between feminine and masculine, rational and emotional, chronologically organised progress of the plot and a more vague way of organising the narrative according to the inner logic or the unconscious. In analysing the variations of narration, inspired by the theoretical and methodological discussion on intersectionality, I conceptualize autobiography as a site for negotiating and performing various subject positions, thus striving for a non-essential reading of autobiographies.peerReviewe

No full textKirja keskittyy tarkastelemaan venäläisiä matkailijoita, heidän käyttäytymistään matkailijoina ja matkailuyrittäjien asiakkaina, heidän tapojaan, toiveitaan ja odotuksiaan. Teos pohjautuu uusimpaan venäläisiä koskevaan tutkimustietoon, Venäjä-asiantuntijoiden kirjoituksiin, lehtiartikkeleihin sekä venäläisten matkailijoiden kertomuksiin lomanvietostaan.
Teos antaa sekä taustatietoa venäläisyydestä että käytännön vinkkejä siitä, miten venäläisiä voidaan palvella mahdollisimman hyvin, millaisia matkailutuotteita he haluavat ja mitä kannattaa ottaa huomioon, kun markkinoidaan venäläisille.
Teos on laadittu siten, että lukija helposti löytää siitä juuri häntä kiinnostavat aiheet. Jos esim. mökki-isäntä haluaa tietää, mitä hän voi tehdä pitääkseen venäläiset asiakkaansa tyytyväisinä, hän löytää tiedon helposti mökki-aiheisten otsikoiden alta. Tekijä suosittelee kuitenkin kaikkia, jotka ovat tekemisissä venäläisten matkailijoiden kanssa, lukemaan myös yleisemmät luvut venäläisasiakkaiden palvelusta.
Teos sopii erinomaisesti myös oppimateriaaliksi, sillä se käsittelee aihetta laajasti ja johdattaa lukijaa ymmärtämään venäläisiä matkailijoita. Teos ei kuitenkaan luo teorioita vaan käsittelee asiaa täysin käytännön pohjalta.The book tells about Russians as tourists. What are they like, what kind of tourist products they find tempting enough to buy it, even to travel to a destination to get it? How can we serve Russians better and create better products for them in the field of tourism?
The work is the result of studying over 200 researches, literature, Russian newspaper articles and Russians’ feedback in different tourist forums in the Russian Internet. It does not only summarize the results but offers an overall picture of Russians travelling abroad, their cultural habits, expectations and client behavior.
The book is an excellent reader for students of tourist industry striving for better understanding of the Russian clients as it does not only state facts but also explains the causes leading to them. The book can also be used as a selective source of information for tourism entrepreneurs as the opinions, complaints and suggestions described by Russians are given in detail under the corresponding
title and are easily found in the table of contents.

Saavutettavuussuunnitelma residenssitoiminnan näkökulmasta case Kanttila
No full textTämä opinnäytetyö on digitaalinen käsikirja, joka on laadittu soveltamiskelpoiseksi saavutettavuusnäkökulmia pohtiviin organisaatioihin sekä heidän sisäisiin pienproduktioihinsa. Saavutettavuudella tarkoitetaan tilannetta, jossa on huomioitu fyysisen ympäristön lisäksi myös eri aistitoiminnot ja viestinnän saavutettavuus.
Opinnäytetyöni tilaajille Minna Canthin Talo Ry:lle ja Anya Productionsille saavutettavuussuunnitelman teko oli ajankohtaista, sillä kirjailija Minna Canthin Kuopiossa sijaitseva kotitalo Kanttila on tulevaisuudessa tarkoitus rakentaa uudelleen. Saavutettavuuskysymyksiin puuttuminen varhaisessa vaiheessa on näin ollen paitsi merkityksellistä, myös erittäin kustannustehokasta.
Tässä työssä esitellään myös 2015 ratifioidun YK:n vammaissopimuksen ja samana vuonna voimaan astuneen uusitun yhdenvertaisuuslain pääpiirteet. Käytetään tutkimusmenetelminä saavutettavuuden tutkimuksille tyypillisiä menetelmiä. Tämän työn menetelmät ovat liikuntarajoitteisen yksilön näkökulmasta tapahtuvan havainnoinnin lisäksi Benchmarking eli vertaistutkimus sekä kehittämistyölle tyypillinen tapaustutkimus haastatteluineen.
Opinnäytetyö sisältää saavutettavuusohjeita fyysisen ympäristön ja viestinnän osalta eri vammaryhmille, sekä seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen edustajille.
Saavutettavuutta voidaan arvioida perus- ja erikoistasolla. Taso määräytyy kohteen käyttötarkoituksen mukaan. Kanttila kuuluu perustason kohteisiin, mutta erityisryhmien parissa hankittuun asiantuntemukseeni nojaten esiin nousee muutamia erikoistason kohteita, kuten valaistukseen liittyvät huomiot. Perustason esteettömyyskään ei välttämättä takaa erikoistason esteettömyyttä käytännössä.
Opinnäytetyö sisältää neljä haastattelua, joista kaksi on residenssitaiteilijoilta ja kaksi residenssikeskuksen palveluksessa työskenteleviltä henkilöiltä. Edellä mainittujen lisäksi työ pitää sisällään kyselytutkimuksen Kanttilan tunnettavuudesta sekä korjaustarpeesta, kysymys- ja vastausosioineen. Mukana on myös saavutettavuuden tarkistuslistat, symbolikarttoineen (kts. liite 5). Saavutettavuutta olisi hyvä tarkistaa kolmen vuoden välein ensimmäisen suunnitelman laatimisesta.This thesis is a digital handbook which is applicable to many accessibility perspectives for many organizations and their internal small productions. Accessibility is a set of features that include not only the physical environment, but also the different sensory functions and accessibility of means of communications. For the subscriber of my thesis, Anya Productions, this thesis concerning the accessibility plan of the author Minna Canth’s home house Kanttila in Kuopio is very timely. Tackling the issues of rebuilding and accessibility early on is both meaningful and cost-effective.
I also present the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was ratified in 2015, and the main features of the renewed Equality Act, entered into force as well in 2015.There are 38 residencies in Finland. I use research methods typical of accessibility research, such as observation and benchmarking, for the interview. This thesis includes a guide of accessibility for physical environment and communications, concerning individuals with visual impairments, individuals who are hard of hearing and deaf and those who are physically disabled, and individuals of sexual and gender minorities. Accessibility can be assessed at a basic and special level. The level depends on purpose of the object. Kanttila is a basic destination, but because of my personal knowledge I raise a few special items, such as lighting.
The work consists of four interviews, two of which are done with residence artists and two with individuals working for the centre of the residency. In addition, this thesis also includes a survey concerning the recognizability and needs of repair of the center, with questions and answers included. Also included is a checklist of accessibility with symbol maps. It is recommended to review the accessibility plan at approximately every three years after the first plan is made
