Measuring symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in people with intellectual disabilities: the development and psychometric properties of the Impact of Event Scale – Intellectual Disabilities (IES-IDs)

Background: The aims of the study were to (a) revise the Impact of Event Scale – Revised for use with people with intellectual disabilities (IDs), creating the Impact of Event Scale – Intellectual Disabilities (IES-IDs), (b) assess the reliability of the IES-IDs, and (c) compare it to an existing measure post-traumatic stress disorder symptomatology, namely the Lancaster and Northgate Trauma Scale (LANTS), along with measures of anxiety and depression. Methods: Forty adults with IDs who had experienced at least one traumatic event were recruited and completed the IES-IDs and the LANTS on two occasions, separated by two weeks. Participants also completed the Glasgow Depression Scale and the Glasgow Anxiety Scale, along with the Trauma Information Form which was used to collect information about trauma history. Results: Fifteen percent of the sample had encountered five or more traumatic events. The IES-IDs and the LANTS had good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Both measures correlated with self-report measures of depression and anxiety, although the strength of this correlation was greater with the LANTS. There was a significant positive correlation between trauma frequency and the IES-IDs, but not the LANTs Conclusions: Both the IES-IDs and the LANTs appear to have good reliability

The Self-and Other-Deception Questionnaires - Intellectual Disabilities (SDQ-ID and ODQ-ID): component analysis and reliability.

The objectives of this research were to: (1) investigate the component structure and psychometric properties of the Self- and Other-Deception Questionnaires-Intellectual Disabilities (SDQ-ID and ODQ-ID), (2) examine the relationship between social desirability and IQ, and (3) compare social desirability scores of those with intellectual disabilities (IDs) and a history of criminal offending to the social desirability scores of participants with IDs and those without IDs and no such history, controlling for general intellectual functioning. Men with mild to borderline IDs detained within medium secure inpatient forensic mental health services (N=40) completed the SDQ-ID and ODQ-ID at Time 1 and then two-weeks later at Time 2. Data for the men with and without IDs and no known criminal offending history were taken from a previous study (N=60). Following exploratory Principal Components Analysis, the number of questionnaire items were reduced, and a two-factor structure was found for the SDQ-ID which was labelled: (1) Positive Self Representation and (2) Denial of Intrusive Thoughts. A two-factor structure was also found for the ODQ-ID and these two factors were labelled: (1) Denial of Negative Social Interaction and (2) Untrustworthiness. Both the SDQ-ID and ODQ-ID had acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Fifteen percent of the variance in SDQ-ID scores was explained by Full Scale IQ, while 21% of the variance in ODQ-ID scores was explained by Full Scale IQ. Between group comparisons controlling for intelligence did not yield any significant differences. The shortened SDQ-ID and ODQ-ID have promising psychometric properties, and their component structures appear robust. Differences between men with and without IDs on these two measures of social desirability can be accounted for by differences in general intellectual functionin

Abstract : This dissertation aims at analyzing social relations and social networks of mutual support and health care based on indigenous self-care ("autoatenção") practices among the Munduruku People, of the Rio Canumã, Amazonas, Brazil. Approximately 2,500 indigenous people live at the Kwatá-Laranjal Land. This is an ethnographic study, including multiple research techniques (participatory observation, interviews, observation of therapeutic itineraries etc.). It supports a finding that states social relation networks are crucial to health/disease/care processes (MENÉNDEZ, E. L., 2009). This theme is part of anthropological studies on indigenous health in Brazil (LANGDON, 2004) and focuses on the relationship among different modes of knowledge regarding attention (MENÉNDEZ, E. L., 2009), considering the existence of various social actors acting in an emergent, plural and intermedical field (FOLLER, 2004, GREENE, 1998, LANGDON 2004). The theoretical-methodological framework originates from the ?autoatenção? concept in the strict sense (MENÉNDEZ, E. L., 2003), which focuses on the intentional practices and strategies of ?lay? actors seeking to prevent, minimize, eliminate or live with their sickness. Such focus allows the identification of multiple forms of attention and description of spaces of intermedicality. This proposal, however, stands out because this study is not restricted to Munduruku specialists or biomedical professionals, but encompasses the relationships and social networks articulated through the praxis of "autoatenção"

Mesophilic-hydrothermal-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion of green corn straw

Mesophilic-hydrothermal (80-160 degrees C, 30 min)-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion and control tests of mesophilic (M), thermophilic (T), hydrothermal-mesophilic (H-M), and mesophilic-thermophilic digestion (M-T) of green corn straw were conducted for a 20-day fermentation period. The results indicate that M-H-T is an efficient method to improve methane production. A maximum methane yield of 371.74 mL/g volatile solid was obtained by the M (3 days)-H (140 degrees C)-T (17 days) process, which was 20.44%, 16.55%, 31.44%, and 14.31% higher than the yields of the M, T, 140-M, and M-T processes. The enhanced methane production was attributed to (1) the improved hemicellulose degradation and lignin disorganization; (2) prevention of the degradation of soluble sugar, easily hydrolyzed hemicellulose and cellulose into furfural and methylfurfural; and (3) lack of formation of Maillard reaction products during initial hydrothermal treatment.
