    Development, Implementation, and Industry Reception of a Novel Multi-source, Data-driven Building Energy Management Toolkit

    Inefficient and uninformed operations negatively impact building energy performance, leading to wide disparities between predicted and actual energy use in commercial and institutional buildings. Though ample research in data-driven building operations analytics has derived various methodologies for extracting energy-saving insights that can inform best practices, these approaches have traditionally remained disparate, and are mostly inaccessible to operations personnel who can benefit from these approaches in augmenting their duties and optimizing building energy efficiency. This research explores the development, implementation, and industry reception of a novel multi-source, data-driven building energy management toolkit as a synthesis of established data-driven approaches in the literature. Energy-saving insights identified from over five separate case study buildings demonstrated the toolkit's multifaceted application to identify operational deficiencies, and interviews with building operators and facility managers regarding the toolkit's outputs were conducted to identify possible barriers which may inhibit operations professionals from effectively deriving and utilizing data-driven insights

    Cognitive Therapy for PTSD in Children and Adolescents

    Children and adolescents exposed to traumatic events are at high risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With the rare exception of very young children, their PTSD presentations at the symptom level are similar to those of trauma-exposed adults, as are their patterns of psychiatric comorbidity, particularly for adolescents. Untreated, at least a significant proportion will carry on with symptoms at or above the diagnostic threshold or at sub-threshold levels that are still clinically impairing. The presence of untreated or poorly treated PTSD symptoms leaves the young person at significantly increased risk of developing other psychiatric disorders, a worsening of any pre-existing conditions, and with greater long-term impairments in educational, family, and peer functioning. Fortunately, evidence-based treatments exist with the first-line recommendation being trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapies, with a growing body of evidence for the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR). This chapter provides an update on the state of the literature with respect to the evidence base for trauma-focused CBT, and in particular for an explicitly cognitive approach, originally developed for use with adults and successfully adapted for use with children and adolescents across the age range. The chapter describes the theoretical underpinning for this approach, guidance on reliving (a form of exposure to update the trauma memory) and the modification of trauma-related beliefs (two primary target in treatment)

    Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing

    This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories

    Psychosocial care for injured children: Worldwide survey among hospital emergency department staff

    OBJECTIVE To examine emergency department (ED) staff's knowledge of traumatic stress in children, attitudes toward providing psychosocial care, and confidence in doing so, and also to examine differences in these outcomes according to demographic, professional, and organizational characteristics, and training preferences. STUDY DESIGN We conducted an online survey among staff in ED and equivalent hospital departments, based on the Psychological First Aid and Distress-Emotional Support-Family protocols. Main analyses involved descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. Respondents were 2648 ED staff from 87 countries (62.2% physicians and 37.8% nurses; mean years of experience in emergency care was 9.5 years with an SD of 7.5 years; 25.2% worked in a low- or middle-income country). RESULTS Of the respondents, 1.2% correctly answered all 7 knowledge questions, with 24.7% providing at least 4 correct answers. Almost all respondents (90.1%) saw all 18 identified aspects of psychosocial care as part of their job. Knowledge and confidence scores were associated with respondent characteristics (eg, years of experience, low/middle vs high-income country), although these explained no more than 11%-18% of the variance. Almost all respondents (93.1%) wished to receive training, predominantly through an interactive website or one-off group training. A small minority (11.1%) had previously received training. CONCLUSIONS More education of ED staff regarding child traumatic stress and psychosocial care appears needed and would be welcomed. Universal education packages that are readily available can be modified for use in the ED
