A global assessment of microplastic abundance and characteristics on marine turtle nesting beaches.

    No full text
Sandy coastal beaches are an important nesting habitat for marine turtles and a known sink for plastic pollution. Existing methodologies for monitoring the spatiotemporal patterns of abundance and composition of plastic are, however, disparate. We engaged a global network of marine turtle scientists to implement a large-scale sampling effort to assess microplastic abundance in beach sediments on marine turtle nesting beaches. Sand samples were collected from 209 sites spanning six oceans, microplastics (1-5 mm) were extracted through stacked sieves, visually identified, and a sub-sample verified via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Microplastics were detected in 45 % (n = 94) of beaches and within five ocean basins. Microplastic presence and abundance was found to vary markedly within and among ocean basins, with the highest proportion of contaminated beaches found in the Mediterranean (80 %). We present all data in an accessible, open access format to facilitate the extension of monitoring efforts and empower novel analytical approaches. The authors thank the UK Global Challenges Resource Fund (GCRF) (Grant number: NE/V005448/1) and the Natural Environment Research Council (Grant number: NE/V009354/1) which has enabled this international collaboration. We thank Dr. Jennifer Lynch from the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) for collecting and processing of the Hawaiian beach samples. José C. Phylogenomics of vertebrate serpins

Kumar A. Phylogenomics of vertebrate serpins. Bielefeld (Germany): Bielefeld University; 2010.The serpins constitute a superfamily of proteins that fold into a conserved tertiary structure and employ a sophisticated, irreversible suicide-mechanism of inhibition. More than 6000 serpins have been identified, occurring in all three forms of the life - the eukaryotes, the prokaryotes and the archea. Vertebrate serpins can be conveniently classified into six groups (V1 - V6), based on three independent biological features - gene organization, diagnostic amino acid sites and rare indels. In the present work, the phylogenetic relationships of serpins from Nematostella vectensis, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, Ciona intestinalis, four fish species, frog, chicken and mammals were investigated, using gene architecture analyses and stringent criteria for identification of orthologs. With some deviations, all vertebrate serpin genes fit into one of the six exon/intron gene classes previously identified, dating the existence and maintenance of these gene organizations before or close to the divergence of fishes. Group V1 and V2 gene families underwent rapid adaptive radiation along the lineages leading to mammals as indicated by an up to nine-fold increased number of family members, accompanied by a rapid functional diversification. In contrast, gene groups V3 to V6 display a rather conservative evolution with little changes since the divergence of fishes and the other vertebrates. The orthology assessment indicates that all vertebrates are equipped with a subset of strongly conserved serpins with functions that can be clearly correlated with basic vertebrate-specific physiology. None of serpin genes from C. intestinalis shares a common exon-intron architecture organisation with any of the vertebrate serpin gene classes, nor was it possible to identify orthologs of vertebrates. The lack of gene architecture similarity and the complete absence of orthology between urochordate and vertebrate serpins indicate that major changes with bursts of character acquisition must have occurred during evolution of serpins in the time interval separating urochordates from chordates, indicating massive intron gains or losses and events providing C and N-terminal sequence extensions characteristic for today's vertebrate serpins. Lancelets and sea urchin genomes, in contrast, share one orthologous serpin with vertebrates. Rare genomic characters are used to show that orthologs of neuroserpin, a prominent representative of vertebrate group V3 serpin genes, exist in early diverging deuterostomes and probably also in cnidarians, indicating that the origin of a mammalian serpin can be traced back far in the history of eumetazoans. A C-terminal address code assigning association with secretory pathway organelles is present in all neuroserpin orthologs, suggesting that supervision of cellular export/import routes by antiproteolytic serpins is an ancient trait. Phylogenomic comparisons show that, after establishment of canonical exon-intron patterns in the serpin superfamily at the dawn of vertebrate evolution, multiple intron acquisition events have occurred during diversification of a lineage of actinopterygian fishes. The novel introns were acquired within a limited time interval (on an evolutionary timescale), and no such events were observed in other groups of vertebrates. Examination of the sequences flanking the intron insertion points revealed that the genetic requirements for acquisition of novel introns might be less stringent than previously suggested. Finally, we argue that genome compaction, a phenomenon associated with the fish lineage depicting preferential intron gain, might promote intron acquisition

Kilback Each school year brings new challenges to students and staff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and a revised perspective on essential goals. We have struggled this year with development of course objectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty final exams, and a different budgetting system. The School Board is holding regular meetings in the various schools, thus enabling members to become more familiar with daily operations. The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the senior students council, is continuing to provide an effective and satisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipating a substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to further improve this function. Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting and impressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment in sports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate all the students, teachers and other persons who have assisted with coaching and supervising various events during the year. Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic and vocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms of value to students and congruence with school and community objectives. Again, thanks to our Yearbook Committee and their advisor, Mr. Hart, for another quality production. ^^•■■■•■■■^■■■■■■■••HMrtMMMMHMIHM^_ __^____i___-_^_i—_— 67 Science: L. to R: Del Cleland, Rex Anderson, Dale Lusk, Dick Robinson, and Ken Lawson. A Validated Framework for Measuring Interface Support for Interactive Information Seeking

    No full text
In this paper we present the validation of an evaluation framework that models the support provided by search systems for different types of user and their expected types of seeking behavior. Factors determining the types of users include previous knowledge and goals. After an overview is presented, the framework is validated in two ways. First, the novel integration of the two existing information-seeking models used in the framework is validated by the correlation of multiple expert and novice analysis. Second, the framework is validated against the results produced by two separated user studies. Further, the refinements made by the first validation technique are shown to increase the accuracy of the framework through the second technique. The successful validation process has shown that the framework can identify both strong and weak areas of search interface design in only a few hours. The results produced can be used to either revise and strengthen designs or inform the structure of a user study

Survival and dispersal routes of head-started loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) post-hatchlings in the Mediterranean Sea

    No full text
[EN] Several loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting events have been recorded along Spain's Mediterranean coast, outside its known nesting range, in recent years. In view of the possible expansion of its nesting range and considering the conservation status of this species, management measures like nest protection and head-start programs have been implemented. To study the dispersal behavior and survival of head-started loggerheads, 19 post-hatchlings from three nesting events were satellite tracked after their release in three consecutive years (2015-2017). This paper presents the first study of survival probabilities and dispersal movements of loggerhead post-hatchlings in the Mediterranean basin. Monitored post-hatchlings dispersed over large areas using variable routes, mainly off the continental shelf. Nonetheless, post-hatchlings dispersed to high-productivity warmer areas during the coldest months of monitoring. These areas might be optimum for their survival and development. We observed differences regarding dispersal orientation and routes among individuals, even from the same nest, release date, and location. Our survival models contributed to improving current survival estimates for sea turtle post-hatchlings. We observed a high probability of survival in head-started individuals during the first months after release, usually the most critical period after reintroduction. The data did not support an effect of habitat (neritic or oceanic) in survival, or an effect of the region (Balearic sea or Alboran sea) in survival probability. Differences in survival between nests were observed. These differences might be related to parasitic infections suffered during the head-starting period. This study shows that nest management measures may contribute to the conservation and range expansion of the loggerhead turtle population in the western Mediterranean. This satellite study was funded by Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, Ministerio de Agricultura y Medio Ambiente (ref: 16MNSV006), Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad (ref: CGL2011-30413), Fundacion CRAM, Fundacion Hombre y Territorio and Eduardo J. Earl Mills and Dave Saruwatari — "You’ve done it again Foster Grant." 10 Senior High Activities Senior High activities this year included Punk Day and the third annual Green Friday. Punk Day was held on October 10 and with many students dressing up in the latest "punk styles." Mr. Wallace was named "Mr. Punk" and Janet Meyer "Miss Punk." They received bright orange guitars as their prizes. Michele Flett, Michelle Mikalson, Glenda Christensen and Scott Noble also received awards (oversized cardboard razor blades) tor their costumes. Also, the Key Club held a demolition derby at noon hour where all students could take out their frustrations by smashing up an old car. The annual P.O.O.P. contest (Pig Out On Pies) was held again on Green Friday. After much eating (and throwing) of the pies, Gary Allred was declared the winner. He was presented with a trophy and T-shirt for his efforts. This year's contest was a little different from past years. For the first time, a girl (Shantelle Kirkvoid) entered the contest. After the pie eating contest, a car stuffing contest was held with the girls against the boys. This year, it ended up in a tie — both girls and boys managed to stuff 31 bodies into the car. 11 Jr. High Activities 12 Jr. High activities this year included things from marshmallow-eating contests to toilet paper rolling contests to tug of wars. Assemblies were held where skits, songs and games were played. Day events such as "hat day" and "tie day" were also held and enjoyed by all who participated. 13 For the second year, Myers students were asked for their thoughts and opinions on various topics. One thing which became evident from this poll was that Myers students do not think alike. Over 60 movie titles, 45 T.V. shows, 70 songs and 80 celebrities were named in their various categories. It was also noticed that many of the favorites from last year were not included in this year's favorites — a sign of the fast changing times we live in. Here are the results — see how your opinions and favorites rank with those of the "average" Myers student. World War III When do you think World War III will occur? This kind of concerted effort substantially reduces the cost of yearbooks for our students. The committee and their advisor are commended for another fine quality production. Several developments this past year have resulted in more satisfactory operations. Our school I.M.C. and library have become a centralized service unit (although not in a central location); the guidance counsellor is now located in the main office area: the kindergarten class has moved into a section of the home ec. wing: the pre-voc class has expanded with the addition of a half-time teacher and "new" facilities: and the Divisional I.M.C. has transferred to our electronics room. A major part of the school year went by before a decision was made by the Board regarding our program for ensuing years — a decision reached after considerable discussion and controversy. Revised procedures for handling absentees and lates have had a very positive effect in improving student attendance and reducing class disruptions — creating a better environment for teaching and learning. We continue to anticipate the upgrading of our cafeteria, and sympathize with the proprietors who have struggled to provide effective service despite relatively primitive conditions. Best wishes to students and staff for a successful year. 38 Sr. High Vice-principal: Mr. Don Ferguson Have You Thought About a Career With the Treasury Branches? For complete information contact R. The 1980-81 volleyball season was, for me as a coach, the longest most wearing season I have experienced: yet in many ways it was extremely gratifying. As you look at the picture above, you will notice that only 2 of the 10 players were on the 1979 Provincial championship team. The other 8 were all new recruits, 3 from grade 10 and 5 from grade 11. Author Institution: Department of Biological Sciences, Youngstown State University and Department of Physiology and Cell Biology, University of KansasTwp new amoebae are described from phase contrast observations made on specimens collected from Florida and Ohio, USA. Ohio specimens occurred among Aufwuchs on the midland painted turtle, Chrysemys picta marginata, and the common snapping turtle, Chelydra serpentina serpentina, while Florida specimens were found among the bottom detritus in muddy ponds. Striamoeba sparolata n. sp. (Thecamoebidae) is spearhead-shaped, 35-45 (xm by 12.5-22.5 |^m at the broadest point when in motion, with a clear bulbous anterior end and smooth uroid. There are usually two indistinct dorsal ridges, a spherical nucleus, 2-4 jam in diameter with a variable number of parietal nucleolar pieces and many endoplasmic lightrefractile granules. No pseudopods are formed during locomotion. Flamella tiara n. sp. (Flabellulidae) exhibits continuous changes in shape while in rapid motion but is more or less broadly arcate in steady slow progress. This amoeba is 30-40 |im wide, 12-25 |^m long, with many conical, papulate subpseudopodia extending from the body surface and leading edge. Adhesive, pseudo-uroidal filaments are trailed. An indistinct, spherical nucleus, about 3.5 (im, is present. The endoplasm is finely granular with no crystals. These two rarely encountered species occur as small populations and the present description will enable recognition by future researchers

Fifth Born and Fifth Born II: The Hundredth Turtle, written by the African-American author Zelda Lockhart, create a duology whose characters make many physical and spiritual journeys. In the story whose setting alternates between St. Louis, New York, and rural Mississippi, the city and rural areas both seem to be treated as a potential safe haven from the secrets and violence created and cultivated by the other place. This article explores the correlation between geography and emotion in Zelda Lockhart’s Fifth Born duology. Beginning with sketching an outline of the historical context of the idea of city versus non-city in African American literature, and then briefly illustrating the notion of Emotional Geographies, the article explores the role which the city and the country play in connection with the characters’ abuse, focusing specifically on sexual [email protected] Łapińska is a graduate of the University of Białystok.
