Reading Harimohan Jha’s The Bride, translated by Lalit Kumar: A Masterly Appraisal in Shared Pragmatism

Most people believe that translation entails creating a copy of the original. However, as no two pieces of art can be exact replicas of one another, this is rarely the intended outcome. However, translation allows the translator to serve as a link between two communities, two languages, two cultures, and, ultimately, two worldviews. It allows the translator to invent something altogether new in that way. The translation is also a freeing activity since it does not entail reconstructing lexicon after lexicon. It gives the translator a great deal of freedom. When exercising such liberty, chapter names may be introduced in places where they are absent. These interventions may also result in changing the title or the addition of the proper references, as well as the repair of typographical mistakes and revisions to the narrative flows and chronology. In other words, the translator is given the \u27authority\u27 to represent two different cultures as an ambassador. This is precisely the situation with Lalit Kumar\u27s expertly translated novel, The Bride, which was released by Harper Perennial

Prehistoric pathways to Anthropocene adaptation: Evidence from the Red River Delta, Vietnam

Over the past twenty years, government advisory bodies have placed increasing emphasis on the need for adaptive measures in response to the effects of human-induced climate change. Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), which incorporate macroeconomic and climate variables, feature prominently in advisory content, though they rarely draw on data from outside strictly constrained hypothetical systems. This has led to assertions that they are not well-suited to approximate complex systemic human-environment processes. Modular, interdisciplinary approaches have offered a way to address this shortcoming; however, beyond climate records, prehistoric data continue to be under-utilised in developing such models. In this paper we highlight the contribution that archaeology and palaeoecology can make to the development of the next generation IAMs that are expected to enhance provision for more local and pro-active adaptations to future climate change. We present data from one of Southeast Asia’s most heavily developed river deltas: the Red River (Song Hong) Delta, in Vietnam and localised analysis from the Tràng An Landscape Complex World Heritage Site, on the delta’s southern margin. Comparison is made between Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP) 5–8.5 and SSP2–4.5 emission projection models and the Mid-Holocene inundation of the Red River Basin. We highlight the value to taking a scientific long view of coastal evolution through an illustrative set of eight research foci where palaeo-data can bring new and localised empirical data to bear on future risk management planning. We proceed to demonstrate the applicability of palaeoenvironmental, zooarchaeological and historical evidence to management and the development of sustainable conservation strategies using Tràng An as a case study. In so doing, we further highlight the importance of knowledge exchange between scientific, corporate, non-governmental, local, and state stakeholders to achieve tangible results on the ground

Re-opening the Halic Shipyard (Istanbul, TK) to the Local Community: Risks and Opportunities of the Regeneration of an Industrial Site in a Megacity

The service-based economy has impacted the Global South megacities, affecting their urban structure and the conditions of their inhabitants. The paper aims to explore the potential of the regeneration of existing but decommissioned productive spaces within Global South megacities using the case study of the Halic Shipyard, established along the Corne d’Or waterfront in Istanbul. Indeed, the valorisation of industrial spaces under the pressures of the real estate market often became the opportunity for a simplistic re-use of these areas as luxury housing compounds with a limited impact on the population and nearby neighbourhoods. The proposed research-by-design approach avoids deterritorialisation and reconnects this space to two urban corridors (a touristic axis and a service network for locals) and to several pedestrian spaces, oriented to the human scale, and focuses on the proximity and the space as a value per sé. In the conclusions, we reflect on the relevance of the correct analytical interpretation of the historical, existing values of the place as a tool for the project. Architects, urban designers, and urban planners will play a relevant role in these transformations, and their actions will reverberate both on the local scale and the city’s global image

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
