No full textI rely on data from 31,754 electoral districts in the United States from 1834 until 2016 to explore how the nationalization of politics occurs within districts. I argue that in the early stages of the American democracy local concerns were more prominent in the distant districts from the capital city than in the nearby districts, and therefore the number of parties was greater in the former than in the latter. However, these differences vanished after the New Deal, when authority was centralized. Nationalization reduced the number of parties everywhere, but above all in the most distant district from Washington, D.C

No full textThis article revisits the foundations of prior research on the selection of party leaders. The authors argue that leader selection in party congresses entails two dimensions: fragmentation, or the number of candidates running for leadership, and dissent, or dissatisfaction with the winning candidate. Using original data from 435 regional party congresses of the two main national parties in Germany and Spain, we show that both the number of contenders and the support received by the winner depend on the party’s experience in government, but only the latter is (positively) affected by the party’s electoral performance. Additionally, upon examining the consequences of intraparty division, the authors found that a party’s electoral performance was negatively affected by the existence of several candidates fighting for leadership, while the support received by the leader in the party congress crucially affects her chances of becoming the top candidate in the next regional electio

Escuela de Administración y Negocios; Argentina.Esta tesis tratará de explica los principales factores que impulsaron o mantuvieron la brecha o asimetría entre Argentina y Brasil en la producción de automóviles (autos particulares, comerciales livianos, camiones y ómnibus1) desde 1990, con los primeros esbozos de las políticas que confluirían en la creación del Mercosur, hasta 2012. El punto de llegada está vinculado al momento en que cesan los datos confiables para una comparación. La mirada del problema combinará dos aproximaciones: la cualitativa provista por algunos expertos en el tema confrontada con aquella que brindan los datos agregados2. Estos datos son los datos generales de la industria automotriz en Argentina y Brasil (ventas totales de automóviles, ventas de autos nacionales, ventas de autos importados, producción y exportación3). Es decir que combinará una mirada desde los académicos especialistas involucrados en el estudio del proceso y aquella que brindan las dimensiones estructurales. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
