    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Les travaux effectués fournissent une contribution à la théorie de l’existence de solutions aux systèmes hyperboliques de lois de conservation, plus particulièrement aux systèmes non convexes pour lesquels l’entropie n’est pas un critère de sélection suffisamment restrictif. Bien que notre attention se soit concentrée sur les solutions de type "splitting-merging" pour les systèmes hyperboliques non linéaires dans une variable spatiale, cette thèse offre un progrès dans la compréhension des solutions entropiques non classiques car cette classe contient la majorité des difficultés qui seraient présentes dans le problème à valeur initiale général.En premier lieu, nous étudions l’existence et les propriétés des ondes de choc réalisées comme limite d’une régularisation linéaire de type diffusion-dispersion pour la classe des lois de conservation hyperbolique avec un flux générique non convexe ayant un nombre arbitraire de points d’inflexion. Nous introduisons la construction d’une famille de fonctions cinétiques, basée sur la généralisation de la règle de surface égale de Maxwell. Notre résultat principal est une caractérisation (par une fonction cinétique) de tous les chocs admissibles : pour chaque état de gauche et chaque vitesse de choc, nous montrons qu’il existe un choc non classique avec des oscillations arbitraires. De plus, nous énonçons les conditions dans lesquelles une discontinuité est admissible et nous décrivons la famille de toutes les solutions au problème de Riemann. Ce travail constitue une extension des travaux effectués par Bedjaoui, Chalons, Coquel et LeFloch concernant les gaz isentropiques avec une loi d’état de Van der Walls couvrant le cas de deux points d’inflexion. Ensuite, nous nous intéressons à l’existence d’une classe de solutions non classiques au problème de valeur initiale pour les systèmes hyperboliques de lois de conservation non linéaires dans une variable spatiale. Les solutions considérées présentent un modèle de "splitting/merging" constitué d’ondes classiques et non classiques qui interagissent ensemble. Notre analyse s’appuie sur un nouveau solveur de Riemann non classique qui est motivé par une fonction cinétique et par un critère de nucléation qui choisit entre le régime classique et non classique. Toutes les solutions satisfont une seule inégalité d’entropie associée à une paire entropie-flux d’entropie donnée. La preuve d’existence de la stabilité non linéaire s’appuie sur l’introduction de nouvelles fonctionnelles qui mesurent de façon appropriée la variation totale et le potentiel d’interaction des ondes non classiques et classiques. Ce travail est une généralisation des travaux effectués par Laforest- LeFloch qui ont déjà établi l’existence de solutions d’entropie non classiques pour les équations scalaires.First, we study the existence and the properties of shock waves realized as the limit of a linear diffusive-dispersive regularization for the class of hyperbolic conservation laws with generic non-convex flux having an arbitrary number of inflection points. We introduce the construction of a corresponding family of kinetic functions, based on a generalization ofMaxwell’s equal area rule. Our main result is a characterization (via a kinetic function) of all admissible shocks : for each left-hand state and each shock speed, we prove that there exists a nonclassical shock with arbitrary many oscillations. Moreover, we state conditions under which a discontinuity is entropy dissipative and we describe the family of all entropy dissipative solutions to the Riemann problem. This work is an extension of the work done by Bedjaoui, Chalons, Coquel and LeFloch on the Van der Walls isentropic gases covering the case of two inflection points. Next, we are interested in the existence of a class of nonclassical entropy solutions to the initial value problem for nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space variable. The solutions under consideration exhibit a splitting/merging pattern made of classical and nonclassical waves that interact together. Our analysis is based on a new non-classical Riemann solver which is motivated by a kinetic relation for the propagation of nonclassical shocks and by a nucleation criterion that selects between classical and nonclassical behavior. All solutions satisfy a single entropy inequality associated with a given entropy pair. Our existence proof of nonlinear stability builds on the introduction of a new total variation functional which suitably measure the total variation and wave interaction of nonclassical and classical waves. This work is a generalization of the work done by Laforest-LeFloch who have already established the existence of nonclassical entropy solutions for scalar equations
