Core-periphery relations in the European Union : power and conflict in a dualist political economy

    No full text
Most of the contributions were presented in a previous version at a conference entitled ‘Core-periphery relations in the European Union as an emerging cleavage of European politics and public policy? Empirical studies of differentiated integration’, at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL) on 11–12 October 2013. A first volume of the project was published in September 2014 as a special issue under the title ‘The effects of the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis: Differentiated integration between centre and the new peripheries of the EU’ in Perspectives in European Politics and Societies, Vol. 15, No. 3. A book on the same topic edited by Christian Schweiger and José M. Magone was published by Routledge in 2015. This second volume complements the first one; however, it focuses less on the Eurozone and more on core-periphery relations and the implications for European integration.Successive enlargements to the European Union membership have transformed it into an economically, politically and culturally heterogeneous body with distinct vulnerabilities in its multi-level governance. This book analyses core–periphery relations to highlight the growing cleavage, and potential conflict, between the core and peripheral member states of the Union in the face of the devastating consequences of the Eurozone crisis. Taking a comparative and theoretical approach and using a variety of case studies, it examines how the crisis has both exacerbated tensions in centre–periphery relations within and outside the Eurozone and how the European Union’s economic and political status is declining globally. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars of European Union studies, European integration, political economy, public policy and comparative politics.-- The European Union as a dualist political economy : understanding core-periphery relations / Jose M. Polysaccharides from by-products of the Wonderful and Laffan pomegranate varieties: New insight into extraction and characterization

    No full text
The main crude polysaccharides (CPS), extracted from two widely cultivated pomegranate varieties, Laffan and Wonderful, were studied and characterized. We obtained the highest CPS extraction yield (approximatively 10% w/w on dried matter) by 1h of decoction (ratio 1/40w/v). The predominant polymers (75-80%) of the CPS samples showed a hydrodynamic volume close to 2000kDa by size exclusion chromatography and the exocarp and mesocarp profiles were very similar. The proton spectra (1H NMR), according to sugar composition and gelling ability, confirmed the main polysaccharide fractions were pectin with different acylation and methylation degree. The CPS from Laffan and Wonderful mesocarp showed prebiotic properties in vitro with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains. The composition of the decoction (12% ellagitannins and 10% of CPS) obtained by a green extraction process of pomegranate by-products, makes it a suitable component of functional food formulations

Managing haemophilia for life: 4th haemophilia global summit

    No full text
The 4th Haemophilia Global Summit was held in Potsdam, Germany, in September 2013 and brought together an international faculty of haemophilia experts and delegates from multidisciplinary backgrounds. The programme was designed by an independent Scientific Steering Committee of haemophilia experts and explored global perspectives in haemophilia care, discussing practical approaches to the optimal management of haemophilia now and in the future. The topics outlined in this supplement were selected by the Scientific Steering Committee for their relevance and potential to influence haemophilia care globally. In this supplement from the meeting, Jan Astermark reviews current understanding of risk factors for the development of inhibitory antibodies and discusses whether this risk can be modulated and minimized. Factors key to the improvement of joint health in people with haemophilia are explored, with Carlo Martinoli and Víctor Jiménez-Yuste discussing the utility of ultrasound for the early detection of haemophilic arthropathy. Other aspects of care necessary for the prevention and management of joint disease in people with haemophilia are outlined by Thomas Hilberg and Sébastian Lobet, who highlight the therapeutic benefits of physiotherapy and sports therapy. Riitta Lassila and Carlo-Federico Perno describe current knowledge surrounding the risk of transmission of infectious agents via clotting factor concentrates. Finally, different types of extended half-life technology are evaluated by Mike Laffan, with a focus on the practicalities and challenges associated with these products. © 2014 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

Paper presented at the Institute for British-Irish Studie conference, “Renovation or revolution? New territorial politics in Ireland and the United Kingdom”, University Industry Centre, University College Dublin, 3 April 2002.This paper analyses the European dimension of British-Irish relations and the EU’s role in altering the environment within which relations between these islands are played out. The paper examines relations between the two states in the context of EU membership and proceeds to an analysis of the evolution of an EU role under four headings: the EU as an arena, EU policies and reports, the EU as a model and the EU in Northern Ireland. The paper then assesses the EU dimension of the Good Friday Agreement in all three strands and finishes with a brief analysis of the longer-term contribution of the EU.Not applicableAn earlier version of this paper was presented to a roundtable meeting entitled “Redefining relationships: North-South and East-West links in Ireland and Britain in the new millennium”, University College Dublin, 8 January 1999.ti ke co - 100707 RB

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
