Quebec’s Act Respecting End-of-Life Care has been in force since December 2015. The law opens up the possibility for patients to request aid in dying and access medical assistance in dying when the legal criteria of eligibility are met. The objective is to discuss the changes in end-of-life care induced by the Act. The magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church and the Assembly of Quebec Catholic Bishops have publicly stated their positions, although there have been dissenting voices in the Christian community. Tensions between magisterial positions and democratic normativities deserve reflection, in the context of a critique of clericalism, new ecclesial models and « respectful dissent ». The problematization by Jürgen Habermas of communicative action, tensions between facticity and validity, and the risks of dissensions in a complex society, provide useful theoretical axes for enriching the discussion. Neither the methodological orientations nor the theoretical framework are intended to lead to an argument directly related to the legitimacy of the medical practices of the Act. Discussion in interdisciplinary and theological bioethics can avoid a few pitfalls of polarization, by admitting multiple points of view and nuances. Both a historical, cultural and sociological reading makes medical assistance in dying appear as a social fact. A theoretical framework from Habermas’ Discourse Ethics will structure the discussion of practical issues: the uses of practical reason are differentiated into pragmatic, ethical and moral questions. When the posture of listening and engagement « on the ground » is favoured, even in theological bioethics, there is apossibility that medical assistance in dying could be considered as a latter resort or a lesser evil. A heuristic approach to practical reason allows us to explore benchmarks in bioethics and to deploy, in particular, free and informed consent in terms of pragmatic, ethical and moral uses of practical reason. Moral uncertainty shapes ethical reflection and is a mark of the human condition. The end of life is a singular experience for each person whose aim is the « good death ». Themes in interdisciplinary and theological bioethics are emerging: narrativity and support, the tragic death of Christ, « post-autonomy », relational autonomy, feminist approaches in bioethics, good communication practices, etc
Technique brings power to the human being; it is power. This issue is of paramount importance for this thesis, which is intended to be a dialogue between the Catholic Church and the theorist of the technological system, Jacques Ellul, on the topic of assisted reproductive technologies. On the one hand, we find a Catholic Magisterium (whose texts studied range from 1968 to 2008) which condemns certain techniques but encourages research in this field. On the other hand, during the same period, Ellul affirmed that there is a correlation between the various techniques (mechanical, political, economic, etc.) which form a system that imprisons the human being in a logic of efficiency. This research starts with an analysis of the concept of technique in the thought of Jacques Ellul and compares it to the concrete reality of medically assisted procreation in Quebec. It then evaluates the similarity between these techniques and the theory of the technical system. Next, we propose an analysis of the Magisterium of the Church to identify the criteria that distinguish licit from illicit techniques on the basis of theological anthropology. These philosophical and theological approaches are brought together in a dialogue about the different themes that emerge from the analyses: the autonomy of the human being and of technology, fragility, eugenics, freedom, gratuitousness, the natural and the artificial. The Catholic Church and Jacques Ellul seem at first to be at odds on the subject of technique. However, we find that a dialogue is not only possible, but proves more than fruitful for the study of assisted reproduction. Indeed, a new issue emerges which could call into question the often-technical choices of our civilisation

In saecula saeculorum: transhumanist philosophy, biogerontology, and the Roman Catholic magisterium on the ethics of radical life extension
The roots of the human desire for agelessness and the want to surpass the limitations of the human condition go deep into the reaches of history. The religious disposition for immortality is ancient. However, the concept of transcending human nature and ushering in a new kind of earthly existence is largely attributed to prominent evolutionary biologist Julian Huxley, who coined the term "transhumanism" in his 1957 publication Knowledge, Morality, and Destiny.Contemporary transhumanism, which is both a philosophy and a movement, criticizes our apathy in having relinquished human evolutionary development to Nature; instead, it looks to assume proper control over our (re)design, through the responsible use of science and technology, in order to offset the shortcomings that are regrettable characteristics of our current human state. The inevitability of ageing and death, inadequate and fluctuating intellectual capacity, corporeal unreliability, and emotional fragility are but a sample of those features of the human condition which, according to transhumanists, encumber our flourishing, suspend us in stasis, and, therefore, necessitate biotechnological intervention. This dissertation engages transhumanism, biogerontology, and the Roman Catholic Magisterium on the matter of radical life extension (RLE). No longer within the realm of simple speculation, the idea of increasing human life expectancy by decades (at least) has become a serious scientific pursuit. Even though the Roman Catholic Church has been, and continues to be, an active contributor to bioethical discourse, it has not yet ruled on the permissibility or desirability of this particular prospect. Over centuries, the Church has developed sophisticated doctrines on immortality, salvation, and transcendence that address human finitude, but these are described as being attainable only outside of, or beyond, the scope of this mortal, temporal human experience. The expectation of a growing number of scientists and philosophers is that, in due time, humans will know indefinite longevity (or "virtual immortality") in the here-and-now. Here, I take up advances in biogerontology and a comparison of transhumanist and Roman Catholic approaches to RLE with special attention given to the ethical implications for personhood, the common good, the social order, and the environment. I also consider the possibility of classifying transhumanism as a secular religion.
Transcending the functional self : a discourse on the continuity of personhood in degenerative dementia
My interest in studying neurodegenerative models of illness lies primarily in the need to define human personhood over the progressive and often irreversible experience of dementia. Here, I analyze, challenge, and ultimately move beyond purely functional theories of personhood, which are necessarily exclusive in their reduction of the human person to a mere demonstration of capacity (for rationality, self-consciousness, suffering, or otherwise) that is inversely proportional to neuropathology. Bringing to the fore important contributions from both secular philosophical thought and the Abrahamic faith traditions, I argue that functional perspectives neglect the psychosocial, spiritual, and biographical dimensions of personhood, which must be described in reference to both historical and concurrent life experiences. Accounting for these features requires the promotion of social environments that are ideal for the maintenance or preservation of this sense of "person" and calls for the treatment of patients with dementia based on personhood and inherent dignity. My thesis, as an analysis of this debate in the interdisciplinary field of bioethics, brings together philosophy, medicine, law, and the Abrahamic faith traditions to establish guidelines toward a more integrative definition of personhood in the context of the evolving and interactive experiences of degenerative dementia
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
