No full textThis paper offers an interpretation of the historical significance of the Royal Academy of Arts in the early years of its foundation. In a transitional age from an ailing manorial paradigm of obligation-deference to the rising industrial society of the early 19th century, the Academy is understood here as inaugurating a strategy of relocation and sheltering of the aristocratic ethos. The paper first sets out to identify the converging forces of dislocation in the second half of the 18th century. It then argues that the institution and its governing rituals operated as an expanded version of Shaftesbury’s ideal of polite conversation, now materialising
as an apparatus of social regulation through an increasingly autonomised notion of culture. In this perspective, the foundation of the RA will be understood as an emblematic stage in the formation of what was still to become a much more
extensive "civilising” educative as well asmoral and statistical state.Cette contribution propose une interprétation du sens historique de la Royal Academy of Arts dans les premières années de sa fondation. Au cours de la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, entre un ordre d’Ancien Régime déclinant et une société industrielle et urbaine émergente, il s’agit de voir dans la fondation de l’Academy la première étape d’une stratégie visant à héberger et reconduire l’idéal
aristocratique (et ses relations liant obligation et déférence). L’article entreprend d’abord d’identifier les forces de dislocation traversant la période. Il aborde ensuite la possibilité de lire dans les rituels de cette institution une version élargie de l’idéal
de la conversation polie chez Shaftesbury. Cet idéal se matérialise alors en appareil
de régulation sociale inscrit dans un champ de l’art et de la culture à l’autonomie
croissante. Dans cette perspective, on proposera de comprendre la fondation de
l’Academy comme un moment crucial dans la formation de ce qui devait encore devenir un puissant état éducatif, moral et statistique aux ambitions «civilisatrices».Labica Thierry. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textLes consécrations de Margaret Thatcher ont pris - depuis, et à distance de son passage au pouvoir – des formes à la fois spectaculaires et familières : M Thatcher a eu droit à des funérailles presque d’Etat, et son aura persiste dans un –isme couramment associé aux caractérisations ordinaires des trois dernières décennies (« mondialisation néolibérale », « néolibéralisme », « financiarisation », « privatisation »). Ces deux cristallisations idéologiques distinctes (l’une du côté du faste cérémoniel étatique, l’autre du côté de l’abstraction doctrinale) sont successivement abordées ici en tant qu’elles posent déjà les termes de l’analyse et de l’appréciation de la signification historique de cette figure politique, ou si l’on préfère, en forment les représentations et les présupposés plutôt dominants. A chacun de ces deux aspects, la présente contribution veut annexer une part moins visible, parasitaire ou plus sombre ; harmonie des obsèques et bruits des excuses officielles, d’une part ; économisme présumé de la doctrine et œuvre politique stratégique d’occultation d’une certaine idée historique du travail (au-delà de la ‘simple’ désindustrialisation de l’économie britannique), d’autre part. On proposera alors ici que la signification et l’héritage de M. Thatcher soit cherchée de ce côté ‘annexe’ où dominent les divers registres de l’affrontement de classe et le tournant coercitif inaugural de la période contemporaine

Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
