Innate immunity in ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection: contribution of IL8 and CSF2 gene variants to risk of trachomatous scarring in Gambians.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma, a chronic keratoconjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, is the world's commonest infectious cause of blindness. Blindness is due to progressive scarring of the conjunctiva (trachomatous scarring) leading to in-turning of eyelashes (trichiasis) and corneal opacification. We evaluated the contribution of genetic variation across the chemokine and cytokine clusters in chromosomes 4q and 5q31 respectively to risk of scarring trachoma and trichiasis in a large case-control association study in a Gambian population. METHODS: Linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping was used to investigate risk effects across the 4q and 5q31 cytokine clusters in relation to the risk of scarring sequelae of ocular Ct infection. Disease association and epistatic effects were assessed in a population based study of 651 case-control pairs by conditional logistic regression (CLR) analyses. RESULTS: LD mapping suggested that genetic effects on risk within these regions mapped to the pro-inflammatory innate immune genes interleukin 8 (IL8) and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulatory factor (CSF2) loci. The IL8-251 rare allele (IL8-251 TT) was associated with protection from scarring trachoma (OR = 0.29 p = 0.027). The intronic CSF2_27348 A allele in chromosome 5q31 was associated with dose dependent protection from trichiasis, with each copy of the allele reducing risk by 37% (p = 0.005). There was evidence of epistasis, with effects at IL8 and CSF2 loci interacting with those previously reported at the MMP9 locus, a gene acting downstream to IL8 and CSF2 in the inflammatory cascade. CONCLUSION: innate immune response SNP-haplotypes are linked to ocular Ct sequelae. This work illustrates the first example of epistatic effects of two genes on trachoma

Brief Note: Cactus Growth Changes as an Effect of Wind in Baja California Sur, México

Author Institution: Centro de Inverstigaciones Biologicas del NoroesteAt Natividad Island, Baja California Sur, Mexico, we sampled a Ferocactus fordii var. grandiflorus population. All 50 individuals recorded in the northeast part of the island exhibited different degrees of prostration, directly related to their size and the direction of prevailing winds. Prostration was always oriented away from the direction of the dominant winds blowing over the island. There are essentially no previous publications of the effects of wind on the cactus growth form

Eating between binaries: food and young adult fiction

    No full text
Eating Between Binaries examines the different ways first generation young adults use food to remember their cultural heritage while also navigating a new American identity. Looking at texts from Filipina-American author Melissa de la Cruz and Russian- American author/artist Vera Brogsol, I argue that media centering around first generation young adults not only uses food and methods of consumption as cultural markers, but that the use of more visual genres of literature—including novels, Netflix shows and documentaries, and food blogs—provide new outlets for community building and storytelling. This thesis juxtaposes the visual and the textual to show how visually seeing consumption can enrich or contradict the written word. By studying the intersections of food and social media, the young adult is better able to see themselves represented in popular media and respond to challenges around identity and authenticity. The interdisciplinary nature of this thesis highlights how intertextuality and media ultimately shape how and why we eat

Thinking self: Queering theory towards a liberatory practice an inquiry towards a greater understanding of the categories of identity & difference (sex, gender, desire, race and class)

    No full text
This paper is a journey into the self. Through narrative philosophy and deconstruction, it is aimed that the many categories of the self, namely, sex, gender, desire, race and class find the convergence in one unified self .Emphasis is made on finding the meaning of certain concept like woman, lesbian, ethnicity and class . The author discusses these categories at length and intersperses theories with lived experiences. As a feminist and as a lesbian activist, the writer ponders on identity theory and politics and how these might be useful in ending oppression and achieving liberation. The three important questions that are asked all relate to the Socratic dictum: Who am I? is the basic tenet that seeks to know one\u27s self. This leads to the next concern, What is the condition of the I (or the Self)? In answering this, the writer speaks and narrates her life experiences as a \u27self\u27 and its many categories. Finally, in looking at her future, the author is concerned about the prospects of personal happiness, as well as justice. The paper admittedly, raises more questions than answers. In theorizing the self, it becomes inevitable that even theory itself is put into doubt, hence, queering theory. Thinking self after all, means that the self is a thinking entity, as it is also the object of the activity. This paper is personal in the sense that the insights herein are the author\u27s own narrative, and hence ought not to be applied to other persons. But it is also academic in the sense that the self is a valid philosophical concern. It is also political for it challenges society\u27s notions on lesbian and gay lives

Requirements analysis for user interfaces in mobile ehealth applications

    No full text
Medical applications are becoming increasingly important in the current development of health care and therefore a crucial part of the medical industry. The work focuses on the analysis of requirements and the challenges arisen from designing mobile medical applications in relation to the user interface. The paper describes the current status in the development of mobile medical apps and illustrates the development of e-health market. The author will explain the requirements and will illustrate the hurdles and problems. He refers to the German market which is similar to the European and compares that with the market in the USA
