Clinical features of infection caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria: 7 years' experience

    No full text
Introduction Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous organisms associated with various infections. The aim of the study was to determine the most relevant clinical characteristics of NTM during the 7-year period.Methodology A retrospective study of NTM infections was conducted between January 2009 and December 2016. The American Thoracic Society/Infectious Disease Society of America criteria were used to define cases of pulmonary or an extrapulmonary site. Results A total of 85 patients were included in the study. Pulmonary cases predominated 83/85 (98%), while extrapulmonary NTM were present in 2/95 (2%) patients. Overall, ten different NTM species were isolated. The most common organisms were slow-growing mycobacteria (SGM) presented in 70/85 (82.35%) patients. Isolated SGM strains were Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in 25/85 (29.41%) patients, M. xenopi in 20/85 (23.53%) patients, M. kansasii in 15/85 (17.65%) patients and M. peregrinum and M. gordonae in 5/85 (5.88%) patients each. Isolated rapid-growing mycobacteria (RGM) strains were M. abscessus in 8/85 (9.41%) patients, M. fortuitum in 4/85 (4.71%) patients and M. chelonae in 3/85 (3.53%) patients. Almost all patients (98%; 83/85) had comorbidities. Among 75 (88.24%) patients who completed follow-up, 59 (69.41%), 10 (11.76%) and 6 (7%), were cured, experienced relapse and died, respectively. Conclusion In the present study, pulmonary NTM infections were more frequent compared to extrapulmonary disease forms. SGM were most common isolates with MAC pulmonary disease the most frequently found. Comorbidities have an important role in NTM occurrence. Further investigation should focus on an NTM drug susceptibility testin

The Way of Transformation (The Laban-Malmgren System of Dramatic Character Analysis)

The dissertation is a 'critical edition' of a system of actor training based on three main sources: a vocabulary of movement analysis developed by Rudolf Laban in the last years of his life; C. G. Jung's theory of psychological functions and types; and the acting system of C. Stanislavski and his main followers. The three strands were brought together by the dancer and acting teacher Yat Malmgren (1916-2002), who taught his system for over forty years to some of the major figures of world theatre and film: Peter Brook, Pierce Brosnan, Simon Callow, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Adrian Noble among others. The dissertation is presented in two volumes: - Volume I sets the system in context, historically as well as in terms of current discourses about the nature of acting. It includes a survey of its origins, followed by an in-depth examination of its three main sources, focusing on the central concept of energy in acting. Further chapters describe: a. a systematic, step-by-step psychophysical approach to analysing character, the actor's own self and to ways of bridging the two in the process of transformation. The author captures the salient features of a method of work which informs aspects of Western acting practice. b. the light thrown by the system on the idea of theatre character. The author puts forward the idea of a character 'independent' of both actor and text. c. the applications of the system in training and professional practice, based on interviews with a number of prominent British actors and directors. - Volume II consists of a detailed, annotated description of the system. It is based on a free transcript of recordings of Yat Malmgren's teaching and amounts to a 'manual' for those interested in studying and/or teaching the system. The volume is illustrated throughout. Appendices include original materials derived from Laban's last years of work, published here for the first time

Jaques Dalcroze and Rudolf von Laban: some facts about his conception of the movement

This article aims to collect a small portion of data related to the concepts that Dalcroze and Laban had about the movement and its use for other purposes. In the first case, he went to musical education, while the second was its foundation in creative dance, but the main union of these two characters, teacher and student, was education as a goal by the method, with particular relevance to the body of your overall design. These two teachers break with the traditional concept of education by marking paths in different disciplines and focusing on a more active and practical but without giving up the theory

Motion Patterns: Signal Interpretation towards the Laban Movement Analysis Semantics

    No full text
Part 11: Signal ProcessingInternational audienceThis work studies the performance of different signal features regarding the qualitative meaning of Laban Movement Analysis semantics. Motion modeling is becoming a prominent scientific area, with research towards multiple applications. The theoretical representation of movements is a valuable tool when developing such models. One representation growing particular relevance in the community is Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). LMA is a movement descriptive language which was developed with underlying semantics. Divided in components, its qualities are mostly divided in binomial extreme states. One relevant issue to this problem is the interpretation of signal features into Laban semantics. There are multiple signal processing algorithms for feature generation, each providing different characteristics. We implemented some, covering a range of those measure categories. The results for method comparison are provided in terms of class separability of the LMA space state

Evidence based position paper on Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine practice for people with muscular dystrophies

    No full text
Muscular dystrophies present a group of inherited degenerative disorder that are characterized by progressive muscular weakness. This evidence-based position paper represents the official position of the European Union through the UEMS PRM Section. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the role of the physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM) physician and PRM practice for people with muscular dystrophies. Asystematic review of the literature and a consensus procedure by means of a Delphi process have been performed involving the delegates of all European countries represented in the UEMSPRM Section. The systematic literature review is reported together with thirty-three recommendations resulting from the Delphi procedure. The role of the PRM physician is to assess the functional status of persons with muscular dystrophy and to plan, monitor and lead PRM program in an interdisciplinary setting within a multiprofessional team
