Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Personal BioBlitz: A New Way to Encourage Biodiversity Discovery and Knowledge in K-99 Education and Outreach

Broad and detailed knowledge about common species in everyday life has decreased among the public. Even biology researchers may be largely unaware of our everyday biodiversity. To counter such 'species blindness' and create long-term excitement and learning about the biodiversity we see every day, we arranged 76-day BioBlitzes at Rutgers University (New Jersey, USA) in 2014 and 2015 where participants identified and listed all species they discovered. The result was 7270/11748 observations from 30/78 participants and 7/13 countries, including 3458/3057 unique taxa, 91%/99.9% identified to species and 80%/54% listed only by one person (2014/2015). Observations of organismal groups did not strongly correspond to number of estimated species worldwide, but appeared to be related to perceived charisma, body size, and organism mobility. Participants reported increased ability to 'see' species and to identify new groups, learning new tools of species identification and strongly increasing their biodiversity knowledge and eagerness to learn more.Peer reviewe

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Collusion in Public Procurement: the Role of Subcontracting

    No full text
This paper investigates how subcontracting affects collusion in public procurement. In a model in which a public buyer runs simultaneous or sequential competitive procedures we show that the stability of collusive agreements depends on the level of subcontracting share and it is not necessarily increasing in this share. In a repeated procurement in which contractors and subcontractors are involved in collusive agreements enforced by slit award and bid rotation strategies we find that simultaneous procedures induce less collusion than sequential procedures, with split award strategies allowing the less stable collusive scheme. We also find that allowing a further increase in the subcontracting share strengthens collusion when the share is low but it mitigates collusion when the share is high. Thus, the competitive format and the allowed subcontracting share must be carefully managed by the public buyer in order to prevent collusion

Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) concentration in an ovine model of myocardial ischemia. Leonardi F, Passeri B, Fusari A, De Razza P, Beghi C, Lorusso R, Corradi A, Botti P. Source Animal Health Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Parma, via Del Taglio 8, 43100 Parma, Italy. [email protected] Abstract Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) is a polypeptide involved in myocardial contraction and has been shown to be a highly sensitive biomarker of myocardial injury in humans. Chronic myocardial ischemia was induced in eight adult sheep by anterior coronary artery legation. Forty-five days after coronary artery legation, sheep underwent autologous myoblasts implantation to the infarct area to improve local tissue regeneration. Blood samples were taken at regular intervals before and after the induced coronary ischemia and myoblast implantation and serum levels of cTnI were assessed with chemiluminescent immunodosage using a commercially available anti-human cTnI monoclonal antibody. cTnI levels began to increase the day after coronary legation and after myoblast implantation and gradually recovered to physiological levels in the next 14 days. Furthermore, the commercial anti-human antibody was shown to completely cross react with the ovine polypeptide as well as with canine, swine and equine sera

AGGRESSIVITÀ E VIOLENZA GIOVANILE. MASS MURDERERS ADOLESCENTI E IL NUOVO FENOMENO DELLO "SCHOOL SHOOTING"

    No full text
The phenomenon of youth violence has become, in the last decade in particular, the main topic of various debates that involved professionals and ordinary people. The information has aroused public curiosity and social alarm, but also an increased attention to adolescent and early adolescent matters. It oughtn't to dwell so much horror and outcry that elicit certain episodes of violence, but the widespread youth problems and aggression among minors, which often escape even the watchful eye of the educational figures, until sometimes do not lead in serious criminal conducts. It's necessary a serious work of identification about social and individual risk situations to build an effective prevention program. After a close examination about the origins of violent behavior, according to a psychoanalytic reading, and the factors that combine to determinate it, we'll focus on a likely profile of teenage murderer, to analyze, then, the inexplicable phenomenon known as mass murder that involved also adolescents. The mass murders committed by teenagers are relatively rare events, mostly related to the U.S. fact, where more and more often the mass murder is perpetrated into a school context. This is well-known as "the phenomenon of school shooting", an act in which young man pours his anger, to familiar faces or not, certainly in respect of those figures who believes they have been able to listen to nor take him into account
