Delayed reproduction among Great Bitterns Botaurus stellaris breeding in ricefields
Great Bitterns bred successfully in ricefields in northern Italy, despite a marked delay to the breeding season compared to natural wetlands in the same geographical area. Great Bitterns show a phenotypic plastic response to environmental change and to variation in peak resource availability. The breeding season of bitterns nesting in Italian ricefields is delayed compared to those breeding in natural wetlands. Our data suggest that Great Bitterns can successfully reproduce in ricefields. The delayed breeding season of birds nesting in ricefields compared to those nesting in natural wetlands of the same geographical area did not seem to affect the reproductive parameters. Indeed, breeding in ricefields occurs at a time when this habitat offers both abundant feeding resources
A lightweight and energy-efficient Internet-of-birds tracking system
In this paper we introduce a novel engineering system for tracking animal movements. Study of animal movement has implications in several relevant and challenging research areas, i.e., from ornithology to global ecology and wildlife management. Inspired by the Internet-of-things vision, the proposed tracking system relies on GSM-based tracking devices that are directly connected to the GSM network to remotely transmit/exchange data with Application Servers/Cloud. The novel characteristic of the proposed GSM-based tracking system is the use of the GSM network for both localization and transmission. This allows to simplify the design of both hardware and software, hence reducing, size, weight and cost of the GSM-based tracking device as well as the fieldwork effort necessary to obtain tracking data. Moreover, this joint localization/transmission phase allows to reduce the energy consumption of the GSM-based tracking device, hence prolonging the life-time of the system and increasing the Quality-of-Service of the envisaged tracking application. We performed a detailed energy assessment of the GSM-based tracking device, while the whole GSM-based tracking system has been tested in a real deployment on four greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) for approximately 11 months in Northern Italy
Habitat preferences of Eurasian Bitterns Botaurus stellaris booming in ricefields: implications for management
The Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris suffered declines in western Europe during the 20th century, partly because of wetland reclamation. The species has been traditionally considered a reedbed specialist but recent studies identified a greater ecological plasticity than previously believed. We investigated habitat associations of a Eurasian Bittern population that has started to breed in the ricefields of northwest Italy since the early 1990s. Booming Bitterns had a higher probability of occurring in ricefields with taller rice plants, more vegetated field banks, more weeds, a larger surface and closer to remaining natural wetlands. The positive effect of field bank vegetation height on the probability that a ricefield hosted a booming Bittern declined late in the season, in contrast to the effects of weeds and ricefield area, which were stronger later in the season. A decreasing importance of vegetation on field banks to booming Bitterns may be a consequence of seasonal changes in habitat structure through the Bittern’s breeding period. The degree of flooding did not affect the probability of occurrence of booming Bitterns, probably because most ricefields were homogeneously flooded during the peak breeding season (June–July). Our findings have important implications for the management of Bittern populations breeding in the ricefields of northwest Italy. We propose simple conservation actions that may favour the occurrence of booming Bitterns and help the species spread in this novel habitat

Автор, лирический герой, адресат в писательских дневниках в России 1920-1930-х годов: Михаил Булгаков и Юрий Олеша
Author, Lyrical Hero and Addressee : Writer's Diaries in the Soviet Russia of the 1920s-1930s (Bulgakov and Oleša)
The paper is devoted to the writers' diaries of the Soviet period. Primarily concerned by the case of Bulgakov and Oleša, the author shows how important their personal writings are for our understanding of these two novelists. She also analyses the structural and stylistic particularities of each 'diary'. For Bulgakov diary writing is a secondary practice, which sometimes is assured by his correspondence (Letters to P. S. Popov) ; as for Oleša it's rather an original literary creation.
Gudkova Violetta. Abstract
The adrenal glands are the subject of many researches in biology and medicine. They have unique histoarchitectonics of the parenchyma and structure of the bloodstream. They also perform a number of important functions necessary for the normal vital activity of the body under stress. A large number of scientific papers are devoted to the study of changes in the structural organization of this organ at the micro- and submicroscopic levels under the influence of various external and internal factors. Morphofunctional changes in the gland after experimental thermal burns of the skin remain poorly understood, which requires further experimental studies in this area.
The purpose of this study was to review the scientific literature on the effects of factors of different origins on the morphofunctional structure of the adrenal glands.
The article analyzes scientific publications devoted to the study of the effects on the adrenal morphology of stress factors, heavy metals, drugs and toxic substances, alcohol, smoking, starvation, hypergravity, physical exercises, hypothermia, poisoning, dehydration, drugs, diabetes, and viral infections. It was found that the factors we mentioned cause the reorganization of the structural components of the adrenal glands, violations of their histoarchitectonics, in particular microcirculatory bed, at the micro- and submicroscopic level. In most cases, there were phenomena of pericellular and perivascular edema, focal hemorrhage, connective tissue growth, thickening of the connective tissue capsule of the organ with signs of edema, vacuolation and edema of the cytoplasm, and the appearance of pyknotic nuclei. In the long term that followed after the experiment, the stabilization of morphofunctional elements of the gland and the microcirculatory bed was recorded, but complete restoration of the structural integrity of the organ did not occur.
