    INTEGRATING TOPOGRAPHIC, PHOTOGRAMMETRIC AND LASER SCANNING TECHNIQUES FOR A SCAN-TO-BIM PROCESS

    The preservation of historic buildings can often be particularly difficult due to the lack of detailed information about architectural features, construction details, etc.. However, in recent years considerable technological innovation in the field of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) has been achieved by the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process. BIM was developed as a methodology used mainly for new construction but, given its considerable potential, this approach can also be successfully used for existing buildings, especially for buildings of historical and architectural value. In this case, it is more properly referred to as Historic – or Heritage – Building Information Modeling (HBIM). In the HBIM process, it is essential to precede the parametric modeling phase of the building with a detailed 3D survey that allows the acquisition of all geometric information. This methodology, called Scan-to-BIM, involves the use of 3D survey techniques for the production of point clouds as a geometric “database” for parametric modeling. The Scan-to-BIM approach can have several issues relating to the complexity of the survey. The work aims to apply the Scan-to-BIM approach to the survey and modeling of a historical and architectural valuable building to test a survey method, based on integrating different techniques (topography, photogrammetry and laser scanning), that improves the data acquisition phase. The “Real Cantina Borbonica” (Cellar of Royal House of Bourbon) in Partinico (Sicily, Italy) was chosen as a case study. The work has allowed achieving the HBIM of the “Real Cantina Borbonica” and testing an approach based exclusively on a topographic constraint to merge in the same reference system all the survey data (laser scanner and photogrammetric point clouds)

    Istaroxime: a new luso-inotropic agent for heart failure

    Istaroxime is a new luso-inotropic compound selected for the treatment of acute heart failure syndromes, which reduces sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity and stimulates the sarcoplasmic calcium ATPase isoform 2 reuptake func- tion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety profile of istaroxime. For this purpose, istaroxime was administered during a 24-hour infusion to conscious dogs with chronic heart failure and to genetically cardiomyopathic BIO TO.2 hamsters for 34 weeks orally. The parameters recorded were arrhythmic events and hemodynamic effects in dogs and mortality in hamsters. In dogs, istaroxime at 1, 3, and 4 g/kg per min did not trigger arrhythmic events or magnify preexisting events. It increased left ventricular (LV) dP/dtmax (about 50% at 3 g/kg per min) and LV dP/dtmax (about 20% at 3 g/kg per min) without changing heart rate, blood pressure, or double product. At 4 g/kg per min, istaroxime increased dP/dtmax >100% but induced intense emesis in all animals. In cardiomyopathic hamsters, the dose of 30 mg/kg prolonged the survival rate to 32%. In conclusion, istaroxime seems to be a promising and safe new drug for improving cardiac performance in the failing heart

    Lack of correlation between the antiarrhythmic effect of L-propionylcarnitine on reoxygenation-induced arrhythmias and its electrophysiological properties

The antiarrhythmic effect of L-propionylcarnitine (L-PC) was evaluated in the guinea-pig isolated heart; arrhythmias were induced with hypoxia followed by reoxygenation and by digitalis intoxication. 2. L-PC 1 microM, was found to be the minimal but effective antiarrhythmic concentration against reoxygenation-induced ventricular fibrillation. No antiarrhythmic effect was observed against digitalis-induced arrhythmias. D-Propionylcarnitine, L-carnitine and propionic acid did not exert antiarrhythmic effects. 3. During hypoxia and reoxygenation L-PC consistently prevented the rise of the diastolic left ventricular pressure, and significantly reduced the release of the cardiac enzymes creatine kinase (CK) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). 4. The electrophysiological effects of L-PC were then studied on either normal sheep cardiac Purkinje fibres or those manifesting oscillatory after potentials induced by barium or strophanthidin. 5. L-PC (1 and 10 microM) did not significantly modify action potential characteristics and contractility of normal Purkinje fibres, or the amplitude of OAP induced by strophanthidin or barium. 6. It is concluded that the antiarrhythmic action of L-PC on reoxygenation-induced arrhythmias is not correlated with its direct electrophysiological effects studied on normoxic preparations

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
