Intermediaries in Innovation Systems: Match or Mismatch?

    No full text
Collaboration among different stakeholders is acknowledged as a driver of innovation. This is especially true in the context of regional and national innovation systems. However, ensuring an effective collaboration might be challenging due to different objectives and interests of the stakeholders involved. Innovation intermediaries acting as connectors among different stakeholders could overcome existing constraints unlocking the potential of collaborative innovation. In this context, this paper proposes a review of intermediaries and innovation systems at the regional and national levels. It provides a mapping of who are the main intermediaries, what are their roles and how they interact between the two geographical levels. The review enables to group intermediaries' functions into three main roles, namely knowledge broker, market-oriented broker and capability builder, recognizing an adjuster role as transversal. Based on this mapping, a strong focus is identified in intermediaries supporting small and medium-sized firms while interactions between the two geographical levels are still lacking. The results are then discussed with respect to digital innovation hubs which are selected as exemplary innovation intermediaries whose mission is to support the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises. Future research and policies should intensify their efforts on strengthening the interrelation between intermediaries and innovation systems within the two geographical levels, measuring and validating results in multiple contexts

Effect of topical antiinflammatory drugs on mechanical behavior of rabbit cornea

Background: A variety of antiinflammatory therapies are employed to promote corneal wound healing. The effects of steroidal and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs on the biomechanical properties of rabbit cornea were investigated over time using tensile tests. Methods: Full-thickness incisions were made and used to analyze the effects of dexamethasone sodium phosphate 0.1% and diclofenac sodium 0.1% on corneal biomechanical properties during wound healing at 7, 14 and 21 days after surgery. Results: The full-thickness incision deeply modified all of the mechanical properties. At 3 weeks after incision, regardless of the drug therapy, the tensile modulus was about 70% of the value for the intact cornea. Conclusions: Topical treatment with dexamethasone was particularly effective during the first week after surgery; the second week after surgery, a similar result was observed in the corneas treated with diclofenac. Low doses of steroidal and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs would seem to have the potential to improve biomechanical properties only during the early stage of the healing process of the cornea

PNRR e università. Una prospettiva locale

The dramatic economic and social consequences triggered by the COVID-19 crisis have urged countries to adopt exceptional measures to support the recovery of their economies. In July 2020, the European Council agreed upon the Next Generation EU (NGEU), a €750 billion plan to support Member States hit by the crisis. To receive financial support, Member States must prepare national recovery and resilience plans (NRRP) setting out their reform and investment agenda to be implemented by the end of 2026. Out of all the EU countries, Italy is one of the main beneficiaries of the NGEU. The effective implementation of its NRRP will depend on the governance mechanisms put in place to ensure coordination between the State, Regions, and Municipalities. In this multi-governance system, Municipalities play a central role, as recipients and implementers of several projects. Acknowledging the challenges faced by Municipalities that would benefit from the NRRP, this study reviews the supporting role of universities in the context of collaborative models for innovation, including the Triple and Quadruple Helix. Drawing on the Third Mission of the University, the study reports the preliminary results of a survey, launched by the University of Macerata, to explore the challenges faced by local Municipalities in accessing to NRRP funds. Indications are provided to support the col labor a t ion among local administrators and universities. This co-creative approach might inform NRRP projects’ design and implementation, also generating short-, medium- and long-term impacts on the academic and local community, in economic, social, cultural and environmental terms

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
