    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     The TRY initiative (www.try-db.org) has started in February 2007 as outcome of the IGBP Fast Track Initiative on Refining Plant Functional Classifications with the expectation to help generate reliable predictions of how vegetation boundaries and ecosystem properties shift with climate and land-use changes? (Nature, July 2011). Thanks to continuous support by the ecological community and funding by the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, we are now able to review 10 years of history, point out on-going developments and discuss future challenges and perspectives of the TRY initiative.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Les communautés végétales plus diverses sont-elles plus résistantes aux invasions ?

    Early theoretical analyses and observations of community structure have led to the hypothesis that a high diversity of communities increases their resistance to invasions. However, to this date, observation and experimental data have shown positive or negative relationships between plant community diversity and invasibility. Studies of biological invasions proposed several others mechanisms explaining invasions : disturbances, presence of empty niches and interactions with others community trophic levels. The role of plant diversity can be decomposed in two factors : is specific richness per se and/or the diversity of functional groups that lead to invasion resistance of communities ? A study carried out in old fields of Montpellier country showed a general picture of invasion and its complexity in this country. Our observations of these invasion patterns confirmed the difficulties to observe clear relationships with their diversity. We then resorted to semi-controlled field experiments. We sowed annual old field communities with different levels of diversity : variation in species richness, variation in functional richness and variation in functional identities for a fixed functional richness. Demographic and vegetative parameters of two exotic probes transplanted into these communities, Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis, were measured along their life cycle. Primary community functioning parameters of the model ecosystems were measured simultaneously. Species richness had little effect on performance of the two Conyza species. Functional composition appeared more relevant than functional richness per se to explain community invasibility. Mechanisms of functional composition effects are proposed.Des études de biologie des invasions ont conduit à l’hypothèse qu’une diversité élevée des communautés augmente leur résistance aux invasions. Les données d’observation ou expérimentales montrent une relation positive ou négative entre diversité et invasibilité des communautés végétales. Les études sur les invasions biologiques suggèrent plusieurs autres mécanismes les favorisant : les perturbations, la disponibilité de niches écologiques et les interactions avec les autres niveaux trophiques. Le rôle de la diversité biologique peut se décomposer en deux aspects : est-ce la richesse spécifique per se et/ou la diversité des groupes fonctionnels qui permet de résister aux invasions ? Une étude réalisée dans des friches de la région de Montpellier nous a permis d’avoir une vue générale du phénomène d’invasion et de sa complexité dans la région. Les résultats ont montré qu’il était difficile de mettre en évidence des patrons clairs d’invasion et de tester les mécanismes mis en jeu. Pour cette raison, deux expériences en conditions semi-contrôlées ont été réalisées. Nous avons semé des communautés annuelles présentant différents niveaux de diversité : variation de la richesse spécifique, de la richesse fonctionnelle et de la composition fonctionnelle. Ces communautés présentaient différentes diversités spécifiques et fonctionnelles. À l’intérieur de ces communautés, nous avons suivi les paramètres démographiques et végétatifs de deux espèces exotiques congénériques, Conyza canadensis et C. bonariensis introduites au stade plantule. Des mesures des paramètres du fonctionnement des commu¬ nautés ont été réalisées simultanément. Les résultats montrent que la composition fonctionnelle de la communauté est plus importante que la richesse per se. De plus, ces résultats nous ont permis d’approcher les mécanismes impliqués dans la résistance des communautés végétales aux invasions.Prieur-Richard Anne-Hélène, Lavorel Sandra.
