Children and the experience of violence: contrasting cultures of punishment in northern Nigeria
Arising out of debates over ‘children at risk’ and the ‘rights of the child’, the article compares two contrasting childhoods within a single large society—the Hausa‐speaking peoples of northern Nigeria. One segment of this society—the non‐Muslim Maguzawa—refuse to allow their children to be beaten; the other segment, the Muslim Hausa, tolerate corporal punishment both at home and especially in Qur'anic schools. Why the difference? Economic as well as political reasons are offered as reasons for the rejection of corporal punishment while it is argued that, in the eyes of Muslim society in the cities, the threat of punishment is essential for both educating and ‘civilising’ the young by imposing the necessary degree of discipline and self‐control that are considered the hallmark of a good Muslim. In short, ‘cultures of punishment’ arise out of specific historical conditions, with wide variations in the degree and frequency with which children actually suffer punishment, and at whose hands. Finally the question is raised whether the violence experienced in schooling has sanctioned in the community at large a greater tolerance of violence‐as‐‘punishment’
Author, publisher and bookseller : a tripartite synergy in Nigerian book industry
This work is about the roles of Author, Publisher and Bookseller in Book development in
Nigeria. The paper started by delving into the history of Book Publishing in Nigeria after
which it proceeded by defining who an author, a publisher, and a bookseller is and
expatiated on the indispensable roles of these key actors in Nigerian Book Industry and in
the emerging Information Society. Furthermore, the various constraints to book
development were identified while the paper advised on how the Book Industry can be
further promoted in Nigeria. However, the paper concluded and made recommendations
on how the Book sector can help in enhancing scholarship in the country
Where's the last speaker?
If they are lucky enough, people working with endangered languages around the world won't be confronted with this question. For all of us working with critically endagered languages, however, this is most of the time the first question with which we are confronted. Sometimes this question comes up disguised in different forms depending on the current stage of our reaserch. How many speakers are there? Who are the speakers? Where can I find them? Who is the last speaker? Where is the last sp..
Before we begin again, I want to tell you why last year was horrendous
The education year is about to begin but I can’t let 2018 go. Not yet.
I want to share with you how last year was for me, a Kamilaroi woman, a former schoolteacher and now a university lecturer and educational researcher. My urge to share is simply because I need to be persistent and I have to keep on trying to communicate how it is for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, like me, in Australia today.
I consistently investigate the biases and taken for granted assumptions upheld in our society in my work as a researcher and I want to tell you that last year was absolutely horrendous for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. And yet, it was also a significant year where we celebrated the strength and persistence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and we began discussions about truth telling and acknowledging the detrimental shared history of colonial Australia
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
On the trail of The Last Samurai (I) : Taranaki
This research note is Part I of a three-part series documenting fieldwork at sites related to the 2003 film The Last Samurai. While The Last Samurai has a prominent position in New Zealand’s national tourism promotion as an example of film tourism, it has disappeared from local tourism promotion in the region of Taranaki, where the film was shot. On a guided tour of the main locations in August 2017, the reasons for the failure to develop sustainable Last Samurai tourism became apparent. A lack of commercial potential stemmed mainly from the relationship of the sites to the contents (Taranaki was a runaway location standing in for Meiji period Japan), rather than from the remoteness or unattractiveness of the sites as a tourism destination. There was a registered increase in tourism relating to the film in 2003, which suggests that the problem rested in over-inflated expectations rather than a failure to seize the opportunity attracting tourism relating to The Last Samurai.
How has el Corte Inglés evolved in the last decade?

Curs acadèmic: 2018/2019The aim of this work is to show the different economic situations that El Corte Inglés has encountered in the last decade. In order to be able to explain these situations in depth, the main financial ratios of a company of this size will be calculated and compared.
For that purpose, through the balances between 2008 and 2017 and its subsequent treaty, the reader will be given the opportunity to draw his or her own conclusions regarding the project
Comparing consortial repositories: a model-driven analysis
This study aims to provide a comparative assessment of different repository consortia as a reference to inform future work in the area. A review of the literature was used to identify repository consortia, and their features were compared. Three models of consortial repositories were derived from this comparison, based on their structure and aims. The consortial models were based around either: creating a shared repository for the members, developing a repository software platform or creating a metadata harvesting service to aggregate content. Using case studies of each type of repository consortium, each model was assessed in terms of its particular strengths and weaknesses. These strengths were then compared across the models to enable those considering a consortial repository project to assess which model, or combination of models, would best address their needs and to aid in project planning

Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
