Frugivory and seed dispersal by birds in euterpe oleracea mart. (arecacea) in the Maranhão Amazon
Frugivorous animals are those whose diet is based on the consumption of fruits and
consequently consume seeds either actively or passively. Birds are among the most
important seed dispersers, not only due to their abundance but also because of the
frequency with which they feed on fruits and their high mobility. Among the 96 bird
families in Brazil, only 22 regularly consume fruits, and this consumption can be
exclusive or not. The present study was conducted on Fazenda Nativa 09, located 7
km from the town of Governador Newton Bello-MA, from July 2023 to June 2024,
with the aim of determining which bird species consume fruits and are potential
dispersers of Euterpe oleracea. The methodology used was focal tree observation,
with observations conducted on five individuals of Euterpe oleracea, totaling a
sampling effort of 120 hours. Seven bird species were identified using the Euterpe
oleracea palm as a food resource. Among the recorded bird species, Turdus
leucomelas, Penelope pileata, and Tachyphonus rufus were considered potential
dispersers, as they swallowed the fruits whole or carried them away from the parent
plant. The bird species with the highest frequency of visits to the observed Euterpe
oleracea individuals were Turdus leucomelas (25 visits, 52.1%); Amazona
amazonica (8 visits, 14.6%); and Aratinga jandaya (6 visits, 12.5%). The most
commonly used fruit removal tactic by the birds was picking, employed by almost all
the birds that consumed the Euterpe oleracea fruits. Aggressive interactions were
relatively insignificant (15.5%) concerning the total number of visits. The frequency of
visits varied significantly among species. Turdus leucomelas visited all the observed
plants, with the highest peak in visit difference (20.83%), followed by Amazona
amazonica (5.83%). In the study area, considerable anthropogenic activity such as
hunting, fishing, logging, and extraction of açai bunches was observed, which had a
significant impact on the observations. It is hoped that the information contained in
this study will be of great importance, as it may contribute to the understanding of the
As aves
Dentre as 96 famílias
amazonica (8 visitas, 14,6%); Aratinga jandaya (6 visitas, 12,5%).
as espécies.
Movement patterns of Pachyramphus viridis, Cnemotriccus fuscatus and Euscarthmus meloryphus (Birds: passerines) in the caatinga: an analysis based on citizen science
Migration is a common phenomenon in nature, characterized by the seasonal movement of
individuals between a breeding area and a resting area, and vice versa. This phenomenon is
observed in various species and has a wide taxonomic distribution. However, knowledge
about the migratory routes and distribution of some species within Brazilian territory is still
limited, and many simple questions about various species remain unanswered, considering
that this type of research requires significant effort and high costs, which in some cases,
discourage progress in these research areas. To overcome this obstacle, citizen science
emerges as a practical and efficient alternative for providing data for the analysis of
movement patterns of New World birds. Thus, the present work aimed to analyze and
characterize the occurrence patterns of possibly migratory species in the Caatinga using data
available on citizen science platforms. The results showed an association with the highest
number of species occurrences and the rainy season in the region, indicating marked
seasonality possibly due to the availability of resources influenced by rainfall indices. The
month with the highest number of species records was January, with peaks in the presence of
these taxa extending until February/March coinciding with the rainy season. These findings
highlight the importance of such research in filling gaps in the biology of these species,
promoting more effective conservation and management of migratory species in Caatinga.
Seedling cycle and reproductive activity of birds in shrubby-arboreal caatinga in semi-arid Pernambuco
Within the bird life cycle, feather moulting and reproductive activity play crucial roles
in the survival and reproduction of avifauna in any location. However, both activities require
considerable energy investment. The purpose of this study is to highlight and describe the
annual biological cycle of the molting cycle period and reproductive activity of birds in an area
of Caatinga. Data collection was conducted in Serra do Pará, in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe,
Pernambuco, in the Brazilian semi-arid region, from June 2012 to May 2013. 218 individuals
were captured, including 96 recaptures, covering 43 species of birds distributed in 19 families.
The most representative families in terms of species were Tyrannidae, with 10 species
(23.26%), Thraupidae, with 6 species (13.95%), and Columbidae, Rhynchocyclidae and
Thamnophilidae, each with 3 species, corresponding to 6. 98%. Records are concentrated over
11 months, covering the rainy (2 months) and dry (9 months) seasons, with 21% (42) of
individuals captured during the rainy season and 19.5% (179) of individuals captured during
the dry season. In which during the dry season the number of largest species captured was
obtained with 39 species. The occurrence of molting was observed in 93 individuals, while
reproductive activity was identified in 89 individuals. Both events, the seedling cycle and
reproductive activity, occurred during the rainy seasonDentro do ciclo de vida das aves, a muda de penas e a atividade reprodutiva

nfluence of seasonality on passerine birds in a caatinga area in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Pernambuco
The seasonality of birds in the Caatinga is strongly influenced by the rainfall regime.During the rainy season, from December to June, there is an increase in the availability of resources such as water and food, favoring reproduction and attracting a greater diversity of species. Many birds synchronize their reproductive cycle with this period, taking advantage of the more favorable conditions. Conversely, the dry season drastically reduces resources, causing many species to migrate or adapt their behaviors to survive the arid conditions of the Caatinga. This study aimed to analyze the seasonality of some bird species over a one-year period in a
Caatinga area located in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Pernambuco, Brazil. Fourteen species were analyzed, of which six showed seasonal patterns: Vireo chivi, Empidonomus varius, Elaenia spectabilis, Myiopagis viridicata, Pachyramphus polychopterus, e Pachyramphus validus. Notably, it was observed that some bird species tend to occur in the region during the rainy season, when food availability is higher. Additionally, there was an increase in the occurrence of certain endemic species during the mentioned rainy period, as there is an overlap of some migratory species with the endemic species. For example, the Phaeomyias murina species
increases significantly in the wetter months, possibly due to the arrival of many migrants. This
rainy season provides more favorable conditions for reproduction and resource availability,
attracting individuals from other areas in search of food and shelter. The research concludes that
climate variability is a determining factor in the seasonality of birds in the Caatinga, highlighting
Myiopagis viridicata, Pachyramphus polychopterus, e Pachyramphus validus.
Flowering phenology of plants are the main factor controlling hummingbird community organization, and it evolves in a given area as a unit in such a manner that the presence of a plant species can affect the phenology of other plant species. Nowadays there is little information available on the dynamics of biological communities in the Caatinga. The objective of the present study was to describe the temporal distribution in species richness and abundance of hummingbirds, and also in their reproductive activities, molt cycle, richness of flowering ornithophilous and non ornithophilous plant species, verifying the influence of the availability of flowering resources and of climatic factors in the dynamics and in the annual cycle of the hummingbird assemblage during a two year period study in an area of Caatinga. We also present morphometric data. The study was conducted in an area of shrubarboreal caatinga vegetation, located at Serra do Pará, municipality of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Pernambuco, Brazil. Hummingbird abundance varied seasonally, with peaks being observed during the rainy season. Temperature had a negative effect on both the species richness and abundance of hummingbirds. The dynamics of the hummingbird assemblage at Serra do Pará was influenced by resource availability, with abundance being higher during periods of lower temperatures and when higher numbers of non ornithophilous plants were flowering. Reproductive activity was evident during the rainy season. Molt, especially contour feathers and flight feathers occurring simultaneously was concentrated after the rainy season in the studied area. The assembly studied presented a bimodal cycle in reproductive activity and molt, which in turn were associated with flower availability. These two events were in asynchrony, with molt cycles beginning after the reproductive period. The hummingbird assembly was morphologically characterized by the three sub-groups known for the Trochilinae, presenting small short-billed species, medium-sized with straight bills species, and the medium to large with long bills species. The information presented in this study contribute with ecological and morphological characteristics of some hummingbird species distributed within the Caatinga, and also new information on hummingbird dynamics and their annual cycles in an area of Caatinga
The birdlife of the Horto Florestal lagoon, Amazon Region, Zé Doca, Maranhão, Brazil
Urban ponds are permanent or temporary wetlands located close to civilization. They play an
extremely important role for local avifauna, as they serve as places to rest, feed, reproduce and
as migration routes. The general aim of this study was to assess the structure and temporal
dynamics of wetland-dependent and non-wetland-dependent avifauna in the Horto Florestal
Lagoon. The study area is located in Lagoa do Horto Florestal, in the municipality of Zé Doca,
Maranhão, Brazil. Field data was collected between June 2023 and May 2024 using four fixed
counting points, three times a month. Each point was sampled for 20 minutes. 92 species of
birds were recorded, belonging to 15 orders and 32 families, with 26 species categorized as
wetland-dependent and 66 non-dependent. The majority belonged to the non-Passeriformes (N
= 51), followed by the Passeriformes (N = 41). The most representative families were
Tyrannidae with fifteen species, Thraupidae with nine and Ardeidae with seven. The most
abundant wetland-dependent birds were Myiozetetes cayanensis (N = 3.38), Jacana jacana (N
= 3.11) and Chloroceryle amazona (N = 2.27), with four seasonal visitors from the Northern
Hemisphere standing out in this group, namely: Calidris minutilla, Tringa solitaria, Tringa
melanoleuca and Tringa flavipes. For the non-dependent species, the highest abundance was
for Pitangus sulphuratus (N = 10.35), Thraupis palmarum (N = 9.19) and Columbina
squammata (N = 4.32). Only Picumnus pygmaeus and Furnarius figulus are endemic to Brazil
and no species is threatened with extinction. It was observed that, during the dry and flood
seasons, birds not dependent on wetlands showed greater similarity than dependent birds. In
addition, there was a slight trend towards greater richness and abundance of dependent and nondependent
species during the rainy season; however, no statistically significant differences were
observed, nor were richness and abundance correlated with temperature and rainfall. Although
overall richness and abundance were not related to the variables drought, flood, temperature
and rainfall, some species, in isolation, had their populations influenced by these characteristics,
such as: Aramus guarauna, Tigrisoma lineatum, Butorides striata, Pteroglossus aracari,
Picumnus pygmaeus, Forpus xanthopterygius, Psittacara leucophthalmus, Taraba major,
Todirostrum cinereum, Phaeomyias murina, Myiozetetes cayanensis, Empidonomus varius,
Turdus leucomelas and Volatinia jacarina, indicating that these species possibly have a close
relationship with these variables, as the different rainfall and temperature regimes, as well as
the different seasons, can influence the amount of resources available. We conclude that the
Horto Florestal Lagoon is an area of great importance for the maintenance of local avifauna, as
10 it provides essential resources in the midst of an anthropized area, enabling the survival of
several species, both resident and migratoryAs lagoas urbanas são áreas úmidas permanentes ou temporárias localizadas próximas à civilização.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
