    Radio-guided surgery with beta emission. Status and perspectives

    Surgery is a key treatment for localized or locally advanced solid tumors. However, the application of wide safety margins can result in significant side effects and functional limitations for the patient. On the contrary, tissue-sparing surgery may leave residual tumor, which can lead to local recurrent cancer or distant metastases. To address these problems, intraoperative radio-guidance, such as beta radio-guided surgery (RGS), could be used to detect small cancerous tissue and selectively resect malignant areas. This paper provides a comprehensive review of RGS based on beta emission, focusing on the physical principles that differentiate beta radiation from gamma radiation, which is already commonly used in nuclear medicine. Although beta RGS was proposed several decades ago, its popularity has recently increased, possibly due to the widespread use of newly developed PET radiotracers. Various approaches are currently being investigated to assess the effectiveness of beta RGS, including the use of both beta+ and beta- emitting radiopharmaceuticals. Beta RGS has unique characteristics that make it a promising complementary technique to standard procedures. Encouraging results have been obtained in numerous ex vivo and in vivo tests. However, clinical trials are needed to demonstrate the real clinical value of these promising technologies. The references presented represent the most impactful works in the development of beta RGS, according to the authors.     The role of nuclear medicine imaging in non-oncological surgical emergencies

    Purpose To evaluate the possible role of Nuclear Medicine imaging in Non-Oncological Surgical Emergencies, with possible recent advances in this field. Methods A narrative review to update Nuclear Medicine imaging tools in the field of non-oncological surgical emergencies was performed, in comparison with conventional radiological imaging techniques, included and discussed from a clinical and surgical point of view. Results Although acute inflammation is an established setting in Nuclear Medicine (acute appendicitis, pancreatitis, and gastro-intestinal bleedings), all indications need more evidence-based data to be diffused in clinical practice, in particular in non-oncological surgical emergencies. Conclusions Larger studies are needed to confirm and expand the role of this diagnostic tool in clinics

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Diagnosis and follow-up of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. role of 18F-FDG-PET/CT and biochemical parameters in patients with renal involvment

    Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) is a rare disease characterized by fibro-inflammatory reaction surrounding ureters and other inner organs with possible secondary renal involvement. Symptoms are aspecific and recurrent phases of activity are generally associated with elevation of inflammatory indices. 18F-FDG-PET is nowadays an important tool for the detection of this disease, allowing differentiation between metabolically active tissue and fibrotic one. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of 18F-FDG-PET in the management of IRF and to evaluate possible correlations between biochemical parameters and PET/CT findings of disease activity. We enrolled seven consecutive patients with IRF (in five histology proved the disease) observed from 2003 to 2012 (5 M:2 F, mean age 53.8 years, range 44-86 years). All patients presented with fever as first symptom; two had obstructive renal failure requiring hemodialysis; one underwent monolateral nephrectomy for parenchyma infiltration; six presented ureteral involvement; three underwent ureteral stent placement. For each patient, during a mean total follow-up of 26.5 months we evaluated serum creatinine, BUN, Hb, RBCs, WBCs, PLT, CRP, ESR. Periodic 18F-FDG-PET/CT scans (every 5.9 months-mean) were performed in all patients. Statistical evaluation was performed using "stepwise regression" analysis. Steroids and immunosuppressive agents induced a progressive normalization of PET/CT scans in all patients at the end of follow-up. Stepwise regression analysis showed that BUN, serum creatinine and CRP only if considered together, significantly correlated with SUV max (p value = 0.000003057). 18F-FDG-PET is a useful tool for clinical decision making in patient with IRF, allowing to evaluate the efficacy of the pharmacological treatment and to detect early recurrences, to modify the therapeutic approach. Acute phase reactants are not reliable alone for the management and the follow-up as they are often not concordant with metabolic assessment of the disease. In patients with ureteral involvement, CRP together with BUN and serum creatinine has a significant correlation with PET/CT results, and can help physicians in therapeutic approach, better than a single parameter

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
